18. Case Study -
Earlier people used to measure short distances using their foot,
handspan or arm length. Measuring length using the above tools is
not convenient because each individual will have different
handspan, foot length and arm length. The above tools were used
initially because of lack of availability of appropriate measurement
system. In order to measure length accurately divider, a meter
scale, inch tape is used. Length is measured in meters, centimetres,
inches, feet, etc. Mass of a substance is measured using balances
such as spring balance , beam balance and weighing machine. Mass
is measured in kilograms, grams, milligrams, pounds etc .
