OWN THE INBOX

CHALLENGE

PART 1: WRITE SUBJECT LINES & PREVIEW TEXT

Open your Google Doc and for all six emails add the following at the top. Refer to the
Subject Line Sparker for inspiration.

Subject A:
Subject B:
Subject C:
Subject D:
Meta/Preview Text:

Then write four subject line options and one Meta/Preview Text – keeping in mind the 5
types of click-worthy subject lines.

TIP: Keep your subject lines around 6-8 words (or around 30 characters) for mobile
optimization. And keep your Meta/Preview Text around 50 characters for mobile
optimization.

PART 2: ADD YOUR CTAS

Following the Sandwich Method, go through your email and add your three CTAs.

One subtle CTA in the beginning.

One stand-out CTA towards the end.
One bookend or subtle CTA in the P.S. Line

TIP: Remember, if you use the bookend CTA it should say the same thing as your subject
line.

PART 3: REVIEW FOR SPAM TRIGGERS

Scan through your emails and edit for spam triggers:

Avoid Spam Trigger Words – refer to the Spam Trigger Words Guide
Keep formatting simple – avoid non-emoji symbols, multi-colored fonts, and varying
font types or sizes.
Remove ALL CAPS and extreme punctuation (lay off the !!!!!!!! and ??????)
Go easy on emojis and images – less is more!

PART 4: CHECK FORMAT & FLOW

Step 1: Read Out Loud For Feel & Flow

The goal is to have the sections of your emails flow seamlessly. Strive to create a cohesive
experience for readability and flow.

Make it skimmable.
Use active voice, “you” and “I” (or “we” if you’re speaking as an organization/brand).
Remove any redundancies.
Shorten wordy, verbose sentences.
Use coherence markers (like “but, so,...., that’s why ….”) to improve clarity and
conversational cadence.
Break up long paragraphs and “walls of text” into smaller paragraphs.
Add bolding to commands, key benefits and other important info you want to
highlight, but don’t overdo it.
Narrow margins of Google Doc to improve readability (drag right margin to 5 inches or
11 centimeters).

Step 2: Proofread

Check and double-check for typos and grammar issues! Use a tool like Grammarly or
thoroughly proofread.

Step 3: Check On Mobile

Next, check how your copy looks and reads on your mobile device. With mobile traffic on
the rise, you want to make sure your copy is readable on a tinier screen.

Open your Google Doc in the Google Drive mobile app and scroll through. This is a good
opportunity to further break up any long paragraphs.

Step 4: Copy & Paste Into Hemingway Editor

The final step is running everything through Hemingway Editor to check for readability.
Aim for Grade 7 or below.
