25. Find the zeroes of the quadratic polynomial x2 + 7x + 10, and verify the
relationship between the zeroes and the coefficients.
Ans. : We have,
x2 + 7x + 10 = (x + 2)(x + 5)
So, the value of x2 + 7x + 10 is zero when x + 2 = 0 or x + 5 = 0, i.e., when x = – 2 or x
= –5. Therefore, the zeroes of x2 + 7x + 10 are -2 and -5.
Now,

sum of zeroes =
−(7) −( Coefficient of x)
−2 + (−5) = −(7) = = 2

product of zeroes = (−2) × (−5) = 10 =

26. Find the zeroes of the polynomial x2 – 3 and verify the relationship between the
zeroes and the coefficients.

Ans. : Given quadratic equation: x2 - 3

Recall the identity a2 – b2 = (a – b)(a + b). Using it,
we can write:
2
– –
x − 3 = (x − √3)(x + √3)

So, the value of x2 – 3 is zero when x = or x =

– –
√3 −√3

Therefore, the zeroes of 2

– –
x − 3 are √3 and − √3

Now, the sum of zeroes =

√3 − √3 = 0 =

Coefficient of x

and the product of zeroes =

– – −3 Constant term
(√3)(−√3) = −3 = = 2
1 Coefficient of x

27. Find the roots of the quadratic equation 2x2 – 5x + 3 = 0 by factorisation.

Ans. : Let us first split the middle term – 5x as –2x, –3x [because (–2x) × (–3x) = 6x2
= (2x2 ) × 3] So, 2x2 – 5x + 3 = 2x2 – 2x – 3x + 3 = 2x(x – 1) –3(x – 1) = (2x – 3)(x – 1)
Now, 2x2 – 5x + 3 = 0 can be rewritten as (2x – 3)(x – 1) = 0
So, the values of x for which 2x2 – 5x + 3 = 0 are the same for which (2x – 3)(x – 1) =
0
i.e., either 2x – 3 = 0 or x – 1 = 0.
Now, 2x – 3 = 0 gives x =
3

2
and x – 1 = 0 gives x = 1.
So, x = 3

2
and x = 1 are the roots of the given quadratic equation.
28. Which term of the AP: 3, 8, 13, 18, ……….., is 78
Ans. : The given AP is 3, 8, 13, 18, .....
Here a = 3
d=8-3=5
Let the nth term of the AP be 78.
then, an = a + (n - 1) d

Page 4
⇒ 78 = 3 + (n - 1) (5)
⇒ 5(n - 1) = 78 - 3
⇒ 5(n - 1) = 75
75
⇒ n −1 =
5

⇒ n - 1 = 15
⇒ n = 15 + 1
⇒ n = 16
29. Find the number of terms in AP: 7, 13, 19, …., 205
Ans. : 7, 13, 19, ...., 205
Here a = 7
d = 13 - 7 = 6
an = 205
Let the number of terms be n.
Then, an = 205
⇒ a + (n - 1)d = 205
⇒ 7 + (n - 1)6 = 205
⇒ 6(n - 1) = 205 - 7
⇒ 6(n - 1) = 198
198
⇒ n −1 =
6

⇒ n - 1= 33
⇒ n = 33 + 1
⇒ n = 34
Hence, the number of terms of the given AP is 34.
30. Find a point on the y-axis which is equidistant from the points A(6, 5) and B (- 4,
3).
Ans. : We have to find a point on the y-axis which is equidistant from the points
A(6, 5) and B (- 4, 3). We know that a point on y-axis is of the form (0, y). So, let the
required point be P (0, y).

⇒ 4y = 36
⇒ y=9
So, the required point is (0, 9).
31. Find the relation between x and y such that the point (x, y) is equidistant from
the points (7, 1) and (3, 5).

Ans. : Let P(x, y) be equidistant from the points A(7, 1) and B(3, 5)
AP = BP (Given)
⇒ AP2 = BP2
⇒ (x - 7)2 + (y - 1)2 = (x - 3)2 + (y - 5)2
⇒ x2 + 49 - 14x + y2 + 1 - 2y = x2 + 9 - 6x + y2 + 25 - 10y
⇒ 49 - 14x + 1 - 2y = 9 - 6x + 25 - 10y
⇒ - 14x + 6x - 2y + 10 y = 34 - 50

33. If sin 3A = cos(A − 26 )

, where 3A is an acute angle, find the value of A.

Ans. : We are given that sin 3A = cos (A - 26o) ...... (1)

Since sin 3A = cos (90o - 3A), we can write (1) as
cos (90o - 3A) = cos (A - 26o)
Since 90o - 3A and A - 26o are both acute angles, therefore,
90o - 3A = A - 26o

Page 6
4A = 116o

A=29o
34. The shadow of a tower standing on a level ground is found to be 40 m longer

Hence, she is correct. The correct volume is 346.51 cm3.
36. A solid iron pole consists of a cylinder of height 220 cm and base diameter 24
cm is surmounted by another cylinder of height 60 cm and radius 8 cm. Find the
mass of the pole, given that 1 cm3 of iron has approximately 8 g mass. (Use π =

Ans. : Radius of lower cylinder = R = 12 cm
Radius of upper cylinder = r = 8 cm
Height of upper cylinder = h = 60 cm
Height of lower cylinder = H = 220 cm
Volume of solid iron pole 2

38. Solve the pair of linear equations by substitution method: x + y = 14; x – y = 4

Ans. : x + y = 14; x - y = 4
the given pair of linear equations is
x + y = 14.................(1)
x - y = 4....................(2)
From equation(1),
y = 14 - x...................(3)
Substitute this value of y in equation(2), we get
x - (14 - x) = 4
⇒ x - 14 + x = 4

⇒2x - 14 = 4

⇒2x = 4 + 14
⇒2x = 18

18
⇒ x = = 9
2

Page 8
Substituting this value of x in equation (3), we get y = 14 - 9 = 5
Therefore, the solution is x = , y = 5
verification: Substituting x = 9 and y = 5, we find that both the equations (1) and (2)
are satisfied as shown below:
x + y = 9 + 5 = 14
x - y = 9 - 5=4
This verifies the solution.
39. Check whether the pair of equations x + 3y = 6 and 2x – 3y = 12 is consistent. If

Plot the points A(0, 2), B(6, 0), P(0, – 4) and Q(3, – 2) on graph paper, and join the
points to form the lines AB and PQ

We observe that there is a point B (6, 0) common to both the lines AB and PQ. So,
the solution of the pair of linear equations is x = 6 and y = 0, i.e., the given pair of
equations is consistent.

41. Find the point on the x-axis which is equidistant from (2, -5) and (-2, 9).
Ans. : We know that a point on the x-axis is of the form (x, 0). So, let the point P(x,
0) be equidistant from A(2, –5) and B(–2, 9). Then
PA = PB
⇒ PA2 = PB2

42. Do the points (3, 2), (–2, –3) and (2, 3) form a triangle? If so, name the type of
triangle formed.
Ans. : Let us apply the distance formula to find the distances PQ, QR and PR, where
P↔(3, 2),
Q ↔(–2, –3) and
R↔(2, 3)
are the given points. We have

Page 10
−−−−−−−−−−−−−−− −− −−−− −−

PR = √(3 − 2) + (2 − 3) = √1 + (−1) = √2 = 1.41( approx. )

Since the sum of any two of these distances is greater than the third distance,
therefore, the points P, Q and R form a triangle.
Also, PQ 2 + PR2 = QR2 , by the converse of Pythagoras theorem, we have ∠ P = 90°.
Therefore, PQR is a right triangle.
43. Two tangents TP and TQ are drawn to a circle with centre O from an external
point T. Prove that ∠
 PTQ = 2∠ OPQ.

Ans. :
Given A circle with centre O and an external point T and two tangents TP and TQ to
the circle, where P, Q are the points of contact.
To Prove: ∠ PTQ = 2∠ OPQ
Proof: Let ∠ PTQ = θ
Since TP, TQ are tangents drawn from point T to the circle.
TP = TQ
∴ TPQ is an isoscles triangle

∴ ∠ TPQ = ∠ TQP = (180o - θ ) = 90o -

1

Since, TP is a tangent to the circle at point of contact P

∴ ∠ OPT = 90o
∴ ∠OPQ = ∠ OPT - ∠ TPQ = 90o - (90o - 1

∠ PTQ
Thus, ∠ PTQ = 2∠ OPQ
44. Draw a circle and two lines parallel to a given line such that one is a tangent and
the other, a secant to the circle.

Ans. :
Steps of Construction:
i. Draw a circle with any radius and center O. Here xy is given line.
ii. Choose any point P on the circumference of the circle, and draw a line
passing through P, Let's name it AB.
iii. Draw a line AB parallel to xy, such that AB intersects the circle at two
points P and [Link], AB and xy are two parallel lines. AB intersects the
circle at exactly two points, P and Q. Therefore, line AB is the secant of this
circle.
iv. CD intersects the circle at exactly one point, R, line CD is the tangent to the
circle.

46. Two dice, one blue and one grey are thrown at the same time. Write down all
the possible outcomes. What is the probability that the sum of the two numbers
appearing on the top of the dice is
i. 8?
ii. 13?
iii. less than or equal to 12?
Ans. : When the blue die shows ‘1’, the grey die could show any one of the
numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. The same is true when the blue die shows ‘2’, ‘3’, ‘4’, ‘5’ or
‘6’. The possible outcomes of the experiment are listed in the table below; the first
number in each ordered pair is the number appearing on the blue die and the
second number is that on the grey die.

So, the number of possible outcomes = 6 × 6 = 36.

i. The outcomes favourable to the event ‘the sum of the two numbers is 8’
denoted by E, are: (2, 6), (3, 5), (4, 4), (5, 3), (6, 2) (see Fig.)
i.e., the number of outcomes favourable to E = 5.
Hence, P(E) = 5

36

ii. As you can see from Fig., there is no outcome favourable to the event F,
‘the sum of two numbers is 13’.
So, P (F ) = 0
= 0
36

iii. As you can see from Fig., all the outcomes are favourable to the event G,
‘sum of two numbers ≤ 12’.
So, P(G) = 36

47. A pole has to be erected at a point on the boundary of a circular park of

diameter 13 metres in such a way that the difference of its distances from two
diametrically opposite fixed gates A and B on the boundary is 7 metres. Is it
possible to do so? If yes, at what distances from the two gates should the pole
be erected?
Ans. : Let P be the position of the pole and A & B be the opposite fixed gates. Let,
BP = x metres.
∴ AP = x + 7
In right triangle APB,
AP2 + BP2 = AB2
⇒ (x + 7)2 + x2 = 132
⇒ x2 + 49 + 14x + x2 = 169
⇒ 2x2 + 14x + 49 - 169 = 0
⇒ 2x2 + 14x - 120 = 0
⇒ 2(x2 + 7x - 60) = 0
⇒ x2 + 7x - 60 = 0
⇒ x2 + 12x - 5x - 60 = 0
⇒ x(x + 12) - 5(x + 12) = 0
⇒ (x + 12)(x - 5) = 0

Either x+12 = 0, then x = -12 which is not possible being negative or x - 5 = 0, then x
= 5.
Thus P is at a distance of 5m from B and 5+7 = 12m from A.
48. The sum of the third and the seventh terms of an AP is 6 and their product is 8.

Let the first term and the common difference of the AP be a and d respectively.
According to the question,
Third term + seventh term = 6
⇒ [a + (3 - 1)d] + [a + (7 - 1)d] = 6 = a + (n - 1)d

⇒ (a + 2d) + (a + 6d) = 6 ⇒ 2a + 8d = 6

⇒ a + 4d = 3 ..... (1)

Dividing throughout by 2 &

(third term) (seventh term) = 8
⇒ (a + 2d) (a + 6d) = 8

⇒ (a + 4d - 2d) (a + 4d + 2d) = 8
⇒ (3 - 2d) (3 + 2d) = 8
⇒ 9 - 4d2 = 8
2 2 1 1
⇒ 4d = 1 ⇒ d = ⇒ d+±
4 2

Case I, when d =
1

Then from (1), a + 4 ( 1

2
) = 3

⇒ a+2=3⇒a=3-2⇒a=1
∴ Sum of first sixteen terms of the AP = S16
16 n
= [2a + (16 − 1)d] ∵ Sn = [2a + (n − 1)d]
2 2

= 8[2a + 15d]

2

15
= 8[12 + ]
2

19
= 8[ ]
2

= 4 × 19 = 76

Case II. When d = − 1

Then from (1),

1
a + 4 (− ) = 3
2

⇒ a-2=3⇒a=3+2⇒a=5
∴ Sum of first sixteen terms of the AP = S16
16 n
= [2a + (16 − 1)d] ∵ Sn = [2a + (n − 1)d]
2 2

1 15 5
= 8[2a + 15d] = 8 [2(5) + 15 (− )] = 8 [10 − ] = 8[ ] = 20

50. A vertical pole of length 6 m casts a shadow 4 m long on the ground and at the
same time a tower casts a shadow 28 m long. Find the height of the tower.
Ans. : Let AB denoted the vertical pole of length [Link] is the shadow of the pole
on the ground BC = 4m.
Let DE denote the tower.
EF is shadow of the tower on the ground.
EF = 28 m.
Let the height of the tower be h m.

In △ ABC and △ DEF,

∠ B = ∠ E ......[Each equal to 90o because pole and tower are standing vertical to
the ground]
∠ C = ∠ F .....[Same elevation]

∠ A = ∠ D ∵ shadows are cast at the same time

∴ △ ABC and △ DEF,

∠ B= ∠ E ............[Each equal to 90o because pole and tower are standing vertical
to the ground.]
∠ A=∠ D ( ∵ shadows are cast at the same time)

∴ △ ABC ~ △ DEF ......(AA similarity criterion)

52. The following distribution gives the state-wise teachers-student ratio in higher
secondary schools of India. Find the mode and mean of this data. Interpret the
two measures:
Number of students per teacher Number of states/U.T.

15 - 20 3
20 - 25 8
25 - 30 9
30 - 35 10
35 - 40 3

40 - 45 0
45 - 50 0
50 - 55 2

Ans. : WE may observe from the given data that maximum class frequency is 10
belonging to class interval 30 - 35.
So, modal class = 30 - 35
Class size (h) = 5
Lower limit (l) of modal class = 30
Frequency (f) of modal class = 10
Frequency (f 1) of class preceding modal class = 9
Frequency (f 2) of class succeeding modal class = 3

Mode = l + h
f −f1

2×10−9−3
× h
= 30 + 1

20−12
× 5
= 30 + 5

= 30.625
Mode = 30.6
It represents that most of states/U.T have a teacher-student ratio as 30.6
Now we may find class marks by using the relation
Class mark = upper class limit +lower class limit

Now taking 32.5 as assumed mean (a) we may calculate di, ui, and f iui as following

Number of students per Number of states/U.T

xi di = xi - 32.5 Ui f iui
teacher (f i)

Now, Mean h

Σf
i

= 32.5 + −23

35
× 5
= 32.5 - 23

= 32.5 - 3.28
= 29.22
So mean of data is 29.2.
It represents that on an average teacher-student ratio was 29.2

54. Suppose we throw a die once.

a. What is the probability of getting a number greater than 4?
b. What is the probability of getting a number less than or equal to 4?
Ans. :
i. Let E be the event that ‘getting a number greater than 4’.
The number of possible outcomes is six: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, and the
outcomes favourable to E are 5 and 6.
Therefore, the number of outcomes favourable to E is 2.
so, P(E) = P(number greater than 4) = 2

ii. Let F be the event that ‘getting a number less than or equal to 4’.
Number of possible outcomes = 6
Outcomes favourable to the event F are 1, 2, 3, 4.
so, the number of outcomes favourable to F is 4.
Therefore, P(F) =
