India Post Registered Parcel Guidelines
India Post Registered Parcel Guidelines
It is recommended to use strong paper securely fastened outside the wax-cloth covering for protection. This prevents damage during transport and adheres to guidelines stipulating that wax-cloth alone is insufficient unless properly covered .
A parcel may be opened if suspected to contain other than permitted communication. It will be opened in the presence of the addressee or their authorized agent. Charges on additional written communication are doubled and payable by the addressee .
India Post mandates that postage stamps or official labels must be affixed by the sender or his messenger, as postal officials are forbidden from doing so. The sender is advised to ensure this happens in their presence to prevent misapplication or loss, and to ensure compliance with postage requirements .
If wax-cloth is used alone, postage stamps should be affixed to an official label instead of directly on the cloth, as the label can be pasted over stronger outer material to ensure stability and visibility during transit .
If a parcel is suspected to contain prohibited written communication, it will be opened in the presence of the addressee or their authorized agent. Each written communication found will incur double the letter postage charge upon delivery. If the addressee refuses to pay, the parcel is returned to the sender, from whom the charge is not recovered .
The postage fee, along with the registration fee if applicable, must be fully prepaid using postage stamps or stamping machine impressions. The stamps must be affixed by the sender on the parcel cover or an official label obtainable at the post office .
If prohibited communication leads to unpaid charges, the parcel is returned to the sender without recovering the charges from them. This protects the sender from unforeseen costs due to non-compliance by the addressee .
The weight of an unregistered parcel should not exceed 4 kilograms. For registered parcels, the weight should not exceed 10 kilograms if posted at or addressed to a branch post office, and 20 kilograms in other cases. The size of a parcel should not exceed 1.5 meters for any one dimension or 3 meters for the sum of the length and the greatest circumference measured in a direction other than the length .
Preparation involves selecting appropriate packaging materials to protect the parcel and meet size/weight regulations. The critical consideration is ensuring it meets shape and size criteria for hassle-free transport. Postage must be prepaid using stamps affixed correctly, either by the sender or in their presence, to ensure compliance and avoid postal errors .
A parcel must be of such shape, packing, or other non-risky features that it can be transported without causing serious inconvenience or risk. Items that cannot be easily carried due to their physical features might be rejected .
