1. Essay on What/Why Civil Engineering? – Write an essay on why

you enrolled in BSCE. What is civil engineering and its contribution and impact to society. Use
the basic words only assume that you are a first year student.

Civil engineering is one of the oldest and most important fields of engineering. It focuses on
designing, building, and maintaining structures and systems that improve our daily lives. Roads,
bridges, buildings, water supply systems, and drainage systems are just a few examples of what
civil engineers create and manage.

I chose to study Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) because I want to be part of a
profession that directly helps society. Since I was a child, I’ve admired how buildings and
bridges are made and how they serve people. I want to learn how to plan and build safe
structures that last for years and solve problems in communities.

Civil engineering has a big impact on society. It provides us with safe homes, reliable
transportation, and clean water. Without civil engineers, cities would not function well. They
design flood control systems, which are important now because of climate change. They also
plan for sustainable solutions like green buildings to protect the environment.

Studying civil engineering will allow me to learn skills that help build a better future. I hope to
make a difference by contributing to projects that improve people’s lives and make our world
safer and more efficient. This is why I enrolled in BSCE and why I am excited about the path I’ve
chosen.

2. 2.1. Civil Engineering and Society and Other Professions

Civil engineering plays a significant role in shaping society by designing, constructing, and
maintaining essential infrastructure. It contributes to the development of safe buildings, efficient
transportation systems, and sustainable water supply networks. This profession ensures the
quality of life for communities while addressing global challenges like urbanization and climate
change.

Civil engineering also connects with other professions such as architecture, environmental
science, and urban planning. For example, civil engineers collaborate with architects to ensure
the structural stability of buildings and work with environmental scientists to create sustainable
solutions. Through such partnerships, civil engineers help solve complex problems and create
long-term benefits for society.

2.2. Current Fields/Careers of Civil Engineering

A. Structural Engineering

Structural engineering focuses on designing and analyzing buildings, bridges, and other
structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and able to withstand external forces like earthquakes
or wind. Structural engineers use materials such as steel, concrete, and wood to create reliable
infrastructure. Careers in this field include structural consultants, bridge engineers, and
earthquake-resistant design specialists.

B. Construction Engineering and Management

This field emphasizes planning, coordinating, and managing construction projects from start to
finish. It involves budgeting, scheduling, and quality control to ensure projects are completed on
time and within budget. Careers include project managers, construction supervisors, and cost
estimators.

C. Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical engineering deals with understanding soil and rock behavior to ensure the stability
of foundations, tunnels, and retaining walls. This field is essential for projects such as high-rise
buildings, dams, and bridges. Professionals in this field include geotechnical engineers,
foundation specialists, and soil testing consultants.

D. Water Resources Engineering

Water resources engineering focuses on managing water systems, including dams, canals, and
flood control projects. Engineers in this field also design systems for clean drinking water and
wastewater treatment. Careers include hydrologists, water resource managers, and drainage
engineers.

E. Transportation Engineering

Transportation engineering involves designing and maintaining efficient and safe transportation
systems like highways, railways, and airports. It focuses on reducing traffic congestion and
ensuring the safety of road users. Career options include traffic engineers, transportation
planners, and highway design specialists.

F. Environment and Energy

This field integrates civil engineering with environmental protection and renewable energy
solutions. It involves designing eco-friendly infrastructure, waste management systems, and
renewable energy facilities like wind farms. Careers include environmental engineers,
sustainability consultants, and energy efficiency experts.

H. Civil Engineering Education

Civil engineering education focuses on teaching and research to train the next generation of civil
engineers. Professionals in this field work in academic institutions, teaching subjects such as
structural analysis, materials science, and sustainable design. They also conduct research to
improve civil engineering practices. Careers include professors, curriculum developers, and
research scientists.

Essay on Civil Engineering, Sustainability, and the Future

Civil engineering is about building things we need, like roads, bridges, and buildings. But today,
it’s also about making these things in a way that protects our environment and helps the planet.
This idea is called sustainability. Sustainable civil engineering means creating projects that last
a long time and use fewer resources.

For example, engineers now design buildings that use less energy by adding solar panels or
better insulation. Roads and bridges are also made to last longer and handle extreme weather
like floods or storms. Using recycled materials in construction is another way civil engineers are
helping reduce waste.

In the future, engineers will focus more on smart cities. These are cities where technology is
used to make life easier and safer while saving energy and water. Sustainable civil engineering
helps solve big problems like climate change and pollution while making life better for people.
By thinking about the future, civil engineers are making sure we have safe and healthy places to
live.

Essay on Civil Engineering and Environmental Science

Civil engineering and environmental science are closely connected. Environmental science
helps us understand nature, while civil engineering uses this knowledge to build things without
harming the planet. When building a project, engineers think about how it will affect the air,
water, and land.

For example, when designing a dam, engineers make sure it does not hurt fish or plants in the
river. They also check that it does not cause flooding in nearby areas. Another example is water
treatment plants. These plants clean dirty water so that people can drink it and so it does not
harm the environment.
Civil engineers also use environmental science to fight problems like pollution. For instance,
they create systems to manage trash or reduce smoke from factories. They also design parks
and green spaces in cities to improve air quality and make people healthier.

By working together, civil engineering and environmental science create solutions that help both
people and nature. This teamwork is very important for a sustainable and better future.
