From the last few decades, educational institutions have witnessed a tremendous change
in the way of teaching, due to technological inventions. In the army, some people are
opposed to distance education and question whether it has the same benefits as traditional
education. Personally, I think that online learning cannot totally replace the key role of
the traditional method in the military.
To begin with, there are many reasons online education should be applied in the armed
forces. Many learners can benefit from such a type of education, especially the busy
commanders, by planning their time more efficiently. Since the advent of smartphones
and e-learning, many cadets can now study in the evenings, weekends, or even while
matching from the barrack to the battle field. Also, the cost of online learning is quite
affordable, meaning the army can cut down on the educational expenses. Consequently,
there might be increased investment in other areas, such as military weapons and
equipment.
Nevertheless, face-to-face communication is more effective, and the learning experience
offered cannot be replicated by modern education. Effective communication skills,
cultivating military disciplines, and building healthy relationships with comrades and
teachers can only be developed by studying in a real environment. As a result, online
education does not facilitate effective group education, one of the best ways to learn.
Cadets also get to work in a team as a result of conventional teaching methods. Besides,
online testing makes it difficult for teachers to evaluate cadets. In this way, it is not
possible to track cadet progress, as it is in classroom settings. Further, learners can ask
repeated questions whenever they have doubts or confusion.
Online teaching and learning in military settings also encounter other substantial
obstacles. Firstly, the biggest challenge of online learning for many cadets is keeping
their attention on the screen for long periods because media and other sites can easily
distract them. Secondly, a reliable connection that has decent speed is hard to find in
many military camps. If learners or teachers do not have a consistent internet connection,
the learning process can be disrupted. More over, many cadets, officers, and teachers
have limited skills in using technology for studying and research. As a result, they can
not completly take avantage of the equiped facilities. Last but not least, there is an
absence of clear guidelines to facilitate the digital transformation within the military.
In conclusion, although online learning has a number of positive influences, I think
traditional education is an educational strategy that is irreplaceable in the army.
Prioritizing online courses within the army can have negative consequences, as it may
hinder cadets from developing crucial interpersonal skills that are essential for success in
life.

Common questions

In military education, online learning offers certain advantages such as cost reductions and flexible scheduling, which are particularly beneficial for busy military personnel. However, it faces several challenges that affect its effectiveness compared to traditional methods. The lack of face-to-face interaction hinders the development of essential skills like effective communication, teamwork, and military discipline, which are better cultivated in a real-world setting. Online testing also complicates accurate evaluation of cadets’ progress, as group learning experiences offered by conventional methods are difficult to replicate online. Challenges such as poor internet connectivity and lack of digital literacy further impede the efficacy of online learning in military contexts .

Self-discipline is crucial in online learning environments because these platforms often lack the enforced structure and schedule of traditional classrooms. Without strong self-discipline, students risk falling into procrastination and distraction, which can severely impact their ability to manage time effectively and maintain consistent progress. A lack of self-discipline might lead to lower engagement, decreased motivation, and suboptimal learning outcomes, as students may struggle to stay on task without external accountability .

One of the primary drawbacks of online learning is the lack of personal interaction, which can limit direct communication with instructors and peers, reducing opportunities for meaningful discussions, mentorship, and collaborative learning. This isolation can lead to a sense of detachment or lack of motivation among students. Furthermore, online environments typically require high self-motivation and greater self-discipline, as students must manage their own schedules without the structured environment of a traditional classroom, potentially leading to issues with procrastination and time management .

Cost-effectiveness and scalability significantly contribute to making online learning a viable option for educational institutions. Online courses generally incur lower costs due to reduced need for physical infrastructure and transportation. This financial efficiency can potentially lead to wider access and inclusivity, especially when free learning opportunities are available. Scalability allows institutions to reach thousands of students simultaneously, thus expanding educational access globally without the constraints of physical classroom sizes. These factors allow institutions to serve more students with fewer resources, thereby optimizing their educational offerings .

Online testing complicates the tracking of cadet progress because it often lacks the immediate feedback and personalized oversight available in traditional classroom evaluations. In a physical classroom setting, instructors can dynamically assess comprehension and provide immediate support to students needing additional help. Online evaluations may not capture the nuanced understanding of a student's capabilities, struggle areas, and learning progression as effectively, potentially resulting in less accurate assessments of cadets' knowledge and skills .

Online learning enhances flexibility and convenience by allowing self-paced learning, which is especially beneficial for students who need more time or wish to progress faster than the conventional pace. It breaks down geographical barriers, enabling students to learn from any location with internet access. This is particularly valuable for individuals in remote areas or those with demanding schedules. Additionally, online learning allows students to revisit lessons and access materials at their convenience, accommodating personal schedules and learning speeds .

Multimedia tools in online learning platforms, such as videos, interactive simulations, quizzes, and forums, cater to different learning styles by providing content that is accessible to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. This variety allows students to engage with material in the way that best suits their learning preferences, which can enhance understanding and retention. Such adaptability is significant as it can result in more personalized and effective educational experiences, addressing diverse student needs in one cohesive platform .

Technological barriers and digital literacy challenges significantly impede the effectiveness of online education in military contexts. Limited access to reliable and fast internet connections in many military camps disrupts the learning process. This is compounded by insufficient technological skills among cadets, officers, and instructors, which can prevent full utilization of online educational resources. These obstacles can lead to inefficiencies and reduce the quality of the educational experience, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure and comprehensive training programs to facilitate effective adoption and use of digital learning tools within the military .

Adaptive learning technologies in online platforms contribute to personalized education by using AI and data analytics to tailor the pace, content, and learning strategies to individual student needs. These technologies analyze learner interactions and performance data to dynamically adjust educational pathways, ensuring that students focus on areas requiring improvement. Thus, these systems enable a more individualized learning experience that can improve engagement and outcomes by meeting each student's unique learning profile, facilitating effective and efficient knowledge acquisition .

The military could achieve several financial benefits by adopting online education systems. Economically, online learning is more affordable than traditional methods due to lower associated costs such as physical infrastructure, transportation, and accommodation expenses. These savings could allow the military to reallocate funds to crucial areas like weapons and equipment. By reducing educational expenses, the military could achieve enhanced financial efficiency and investment capabilities in other strategic areas .
