Data Tables

Type of Bean Quantit Average mass Percent abundance in Beanium (total

y (g) sample = 309)

Thick, dark brown 92 31.11/92 29.77%

beans = .3382 g

Skinny, light brown 78 30.98/78 25.24%

beans = .3972 g

Small, light yellow 83 3.930/83 26.86%

beans =.04735 g

Small, white beans 56 6.820/56 18.12%

= .1218 g

Calculations
.3382 (.2977) + .3972 (.2524) + .04735 (.2686) + .1218 (.1812) = .2357 g
.2357 g/ 1.66 x 10^-24 = 1.420 x 10^23 AMU

Procedure:

1. Organize beans of the same type into groups of 10.

2. Once you are finished, total up the quantity of each bean type and record it in
your data table.
3. Weigh all beans of a single type in a weigh boat on the electronic balance.
4. Determine the average mass of each sample by dividing the total mass by the
quantity of each bean type.
5. Tally up the total number of beans in the sample.
6. Find the percent abundance of each sample in Beanium by dividing the quantity
of each type by the total amount of beans.
7. Once you data table is finished, calculate the average atomic mass of Beanium
in grams by multiplying the mass of each type by their respective abundances
and adding them together.
8. Divide the average mass by the conversion factor (1.66 x 10^-24) to find
Beanium’s average atomic mass in AMU's.

Lab #6: Beanium: An Investigation into Average Atomic Mass

Glenn Seaborg, a scientist at UC Berkley has asked you to investigate a new

element recently discovered…BEANIUM!!!!

Goal: Treating beans like a sample of a fictional element, THINK!!!! And design a
procedure and determine the average atomic mass of the sample in AMU’s.

NOTES: Each bean in the bag represents an atom of Beanium in the

element sample. Each bean type represents an isotope of Beanium. YOUR
PROCEDURE MUST TAKE INTO ACOUNT THE FACT THAT WITHIN EACH ATOM
TYPE IN OUR BEAN SAMPLE, THERE IS SLIGHT VARIABILITY IN THE BEAN.

Our balances only use GRAMS, so start there and then convert your Final
Average Atomic Mass to AMU’s

1.66x 10-24 grams = 1.00 atomic mass unit

To be completed after finishing the investigation:

● Using Google Docs, (or do this old school; with paper, pencils or crayons or markers)
create a fictional Periodic Table Box for Beanium. Beanium would be element #119
which would place Beanium on the periodic table as element #119 in Group #1.
● Fill out the box’s oxidation number and new atomic mass to 3SF in scientific
notation and atomic number
● Add its electron configuration in SPDF and add its likely IONIC CHARGE
● Look up Physical and Chemical properties of group #1 atoms and beside the box
to the right, List some expected properties that BEANIUM would have
