Activity: 3

Objective: Verify the algebraic identities: (𝑎 − 𝑏)3 = 𝑎3 − 𝑏3 − 3𝑎𝑏(𝑎 − 𝑏).

Material Required: Geometry box, acrylic sheet, pair of scissors, adhesive/adhesive tape,
cutter.

Pre-requisite Knowledge:

1. Concept of cuboid and its volume.

2. Concept of cube and its volume.

Procedure:

1. By using acrylic sheet and adhesive tape/adhesive, make a cube of side (a – b) units,
where a > b.
2. By using acrylic sheet and adhesive tape, make three cuboids each of dimensions, (a-b)
x a x b.
3. By using acrylic sheet and adhesive tape make a cube of side b units.
4. Arrange all the cubes and cuboids.

Observation
By actual measurement,
𝑎 = ……..
𝑏 = ……..
𝑎 − 𝑏 =……..
So, 𝑎3 =……..
ab = ……..
𝑏3 =……..
𝑎𝑏(𝑎 – 𝑏) = ……..
3𝑎𝑏(𝑎 – 𝑏) = ……..
(𝑎 − 𝑏)3 = ……..
Therefore, we observe that
(𝑎 − 𝑏)3 = 𝑎3 − 𝑏3 − 3𝑎𝑏 (𝑎 − 𝑏).

The concept of cuboid and cube is important because these geometric shapes provide a physical representation of the algebraic identity. Understanding how to compute their volumes allows one to relate geometric models to algebraic expressions. When you construct a physical model of a cuboid and cubes using the expressions given, you can observe how their combined volumes correspond to the algebraic identity, thus providing a tangible understanding of abstract algebraic concepts .

The inclusion of constructing a smaller cube with side b serves to represent the term b^3 in the algebraic expression. This step is crucial because it illustrates the process of removing the volume associated with b^3 from the larger volume a^3 as indicated in the identity. By physically constructing and then removing/excluding this volume, it becomes clear how the identity separates the contributions of b^3 from the total volume, aligning with the algebraic operations described .

To verify the identity (a-b)^3 = a^3 - b^3 - 3ab(a-b) using geometry tools, one can use an acrylic sheet along with adhesive tape to construct physical models of the expressions involved. Begin by creating a cube with each side measuring (a-b). Then construct three cuboids with dimensions (a-b) × a × b and a smaller cube with side b. Arranging these along with calculating their volumes will demonstrate that the combined volume of three cuboids and the smaller cube subtracted from the larger cube's volume results in (a-b)^3, thereby confirming the identity .

Constructing three cuboids with dimensions (a-b) x a x b helps in visualizing the term -3ab(a-b) from the identity. Each cuboid represents part of the subtraction process necessary to verify the identity, contributing to a step-by-step deconstruction of the larger cube, aligning with the algebraic manipulation required in the identity. Their combined volume accounts for the negative impact that adjusts the remaining space within a^3 to fit (a-b)^3 after b^3 is accounted for .

The methodological approach involves the use of a tactile and visual strategy to verify the identity. By constructing physical models of algebraic expressions using geometry tools, the activity utilizes a constructivist learning approach where learners engage with the materials to derive algebraic truths. This involves accurately creating geometrical models to visually observe and analyze the spatial relationship between each term in the identity (a-b)^3 = a^3 - b^3 - 3ab(a-b), thus shifting from abstract symbolism to concrete understanding .

Yes, volume manipulation is essential because the identity translates an algebraic subtraction into a geometric operation. Understanding how to adjust volumes in cubes and cuboids illustrates the algebraic operations' effect, making the abstract idea tangible. This manipulation acts as a bridge between algebra and geometry, allowing you to physically or conceptually remove or adjust space to see the equivalency in volume, thereby matching it to the algebraic expectations defined by the identity .

Acrylic sheets are significant because they serve as a sturdy and transparent material to create precise geometric models of the expressions involved in the algebraic identity. Using them allows for an accurate construction of cubes and cuboids, which helps in demonstrating and verifying the algebraic identity by comparing the actual volumes of the models with the calculated expressions .

Arranging the cubes and cuboids in the procedure demonstrates the identity by visually and physically constructing a larger cube from (a-b) side, smaller cube from b side, and three cuboids with dimensions (a-b) x a x b. By combining the volumes of these shapes, you effectively reconstruct (a-b)^3 and can compute and compare it to a^3 - b^3 - 3ab(a-b). The calculated volume of these models illustrates how the volume a^3 is segmented into multiple parts that sum up to (a-b)^3 once the necessary subtractions and additions are accounted for in the identity. This hands-on arrangement exemplifies the correctness of the algebraic expression .

The summed volume of the models constructed using dimensions (a-b), a, and b reinforces the identity by providing a direct correlation between the physical models and the algebraic terms. By calculating the volumes of these cubes and cuboids, you can deconstruct a^3 into constituent parts that, when summed or subtracted appropriately, equate to (a-b)^3. The actual measurements showcase how the identity holds true in a practical sense, affirming the algebraic expression comprehensively .

To verify this identity, one must possess pre-requisite knowledge of the concepts of a cuboid and cube, specifically understanding how to calculate their volumes. This understanding is crucial as it allows for the construction and comparison of physical models with algebraic expressions. Proficiency in basic algebra to manipulate and rearrange equations is also required to fully comprehend and verify the identity through this activity .
