Instructions:
There are three types of sentences:
● Simple Sentence: Contains one independent clause.
● Compound Sentence: Contains two independent clauses joined by a
conjunction (e.g., and, but, or, so).
● Complex Sentence: Contains one independent clause and one or more
dependent clauses joined by a subordinating conjunction (e.g., because,
when, although, since).
Read the questions carefully and follow the instructions for each section!
Section 1: Identify the Sentence Type
Write whether each sentence is Simple, Compound, or Complex.
1. I like to read books before bedtime.
2. Sarah wanted to play outside, but it started to rain.
3. When the bell rang, the students lined up quietly.
4. Ali and Ahmed love swimming in the summer.
5. I couldn’t go to the park because I was feeling sick.
6. We went to the zoo, and we saw lions and tigers.
7. Although the test was hard, I managed to pass.
8. He baked a cake, and she decorated it with frosting.

Section 2: Identify the Conjunction Type
Read the sentences below and circle the conjunction. Then write if it’s
coordinating (and, but, or, so) or subordinating (because, since, when,
although, if).
11. I went to the park because the weather was nice.
12. The teacher asked a question, and the students answered it.
13. Since we finished early, we played a game in class.
14. Ahmed wanted to eat pizza, but there was none left.
15. When the sun set, we started our campfire.
Section 3: Combine Sentences to Make Compound Sentences
Use the coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, so) to combine the two
sentences into one compound sentence.
16. I wanted to go swimming. It started raining.
17. Sarah studied for the test. She got a good grade.
18. We could play outside. We could watch a movie inside.
19. The cat jumped on the couch. The dog barked loudly.
20. I love apples. I don’t like oranges.
Section 4: Combine Sentences to Make Complex Sentences
Use the subordinating conjunctions (because, when, although, since) to
combine the two sentences into one complex sentence.
21. The baby cried. She was hungry.
22. I stayed home. It was raining heavily.
23. The students were excited. It was the last day of school.
24. Ahmed ran to the bus stop. He was late.
25. We didn’t go to the park. It was too cold outside.
