1.2 AGENT
CO2 is an odorless, colorless, electrically non-conductive, non-corrosive, and non-deteriorating inert suppression agent. It is
approximately 50% heavier than air, and is normally present in the atmosphere at about 0.03% by volume. CO2 is
instrumental in controlling respiration and other vital responses in animals and humans, but it WILL NOT support life.
See Sections 1.3 and 1.4 for Usage Limitations and Personnel Safety Recommendations.
CO2 is a standard commercial product commonly used for carbonating beverages, fast-freezing food products, purging pipes
and tanks, medical purposes, and a multitude of additional tasks. It is also used for fire fighting purposes: i.e. hose reels,
portable hand extinguishers, and engineered fixed pipe systems. CO2 is available in most large cities and seaports throughout
the world.
CO2 extinguishes fire by reducing the oxygen content of the protected space and/or local flame front to a point where it will
not support combustion. Oxygen reduction below 16% by volume will extinguish most fires. Surface or “flash” type fires (oils,
paints, etc.) are quickly extinguished. Deep-seated or “smoldering” type fires (paper, baled cotton, clothing, etc.) are
extinguished by the prolonged action of a high concentration of CO2. Retaining the agent within the protected space reduces
the fire’s ability to re-ignite. In addition, CO2 has a cooling effect on the surrounding atmosphere that has been found to be a
benefit to fire extinguishment.
1.2.2 TEMPERATURE
The temperature of liquid CO2 is approximately –110ºF. (-78.8ºC.) as it is discharged from a nozzle. Direct contact with the
liquid agent being discharged from the nozzle(s) will have a freezing effect on objects within the hazard and can cause
frostbite and/or freezing if contact is made with the skin. The liquid phase of the agent vaporizes quite rapidly when coming
into contact with the atmosphere, thus limiting this hazard to the immediate vicinity of the nozzle.
1.2.3 VISIBILITY
The discharge of CO2 resembles a cloud as liquid agent vaporizes. The low temperature of the agent chilling the moisture in
the atmosphere causes this cloud effect, or fogging. The fine “snow” accompanying the discharged liquid is remnant particles
of “dry ice”.
1.2.4 NOISE
The high pressure/velocity discharge from the system nozzles(s) can cause noise loud enough to be startling, but is ordinarily
insufficient to cause traumatic injury.
1.2.5 CLEANUP
CO2 vaporizes completely after discharge; whereas the cost of clean-up and peripheral damage associated with water
sprinkler systems, foam systems, and dry chemical agents can exceed the cost of the actual fire damage itself. Therefore, the
cleanup costs and downtime associated with a CO2 system discharge are negligible.
CAUTION: Where CO2 may be discharged into potentially explosive atmospheres. Electrostatic charging of non-
grounded conductors may occur during the discharge of liquefied gases. These conductors may discharge to
another object causing an electric spark of sufficient energy to initiate an explosion.
1.4.1 EXPOSURE
Direct contact with liquid CO2 or the dry ice particles associated with the agent discharge will cause severe frostbite burns to
the skin. CO2 vaporizes quite rapidly; therefore, the hazard is generally limited to the immediate vicinity of the discharge
nozzle(s).
DESCRIPTION
CO₂ cylinders are factory filled to capacity; partial fills are not allowed. The
cylinders may be utilized in single or multiple cylinder applications as needed.
CO₂ cylinders are equipped with siphon tubes to enable a full discharge of the
liquid CO₂ agent. The cylinder must be mounted in the upright floor mounted
position only. Horizontal mounting is not allowed.
Filled cylinders shall be secured during transport and storage in accordance with
OSHA and DOT requirements. Upon installation, the cylinders shall be secured
using either cylinder straps or a suitable racking arrangement.
Cylinders are shipped from the factory with a protective shipping cap. These
caps should be stored in a suitable area for future use.
Cylinders are available in 50, 75, and 100 lb. (22.7, 34, and 45.4 kg.) capacities.

1.6 CYLINDER VALVE ASSEMBLY
The cylinder valve (p/n C85-010) is a pressure seat type where the valve is held closed by
the pressure of the agent contained in the cylinder. The valve body is of forged brass and
consists of a main valve seat, discharge outlet, pressure relief disc, pilot valve, and pressure
actuation ports. A cross section of the valve is shown below.
The discharge outlet provides the connection point for the flexible discharge bend, and
serves as the actuation port for slave valves. A pressure relief disc is incorporated into the
valve assembly and provides pressure relief at 2,650 - 3,000 psi (18271 – 20684 kPa). The
relief disc directs the escaping pressure to avoid damage or movement of the cylinder. A
stainless steel pilot valve serves as the fill port for charging of the cylinder, and serves as
the actuator port for the electrical and manual actuation functions. Two separate pressure
ports are machined into the valve (internal pressure port and top pressure port). The
pressure ports are used to route CO2 pressure to the top of the valve piston for valve
actuation.
Each valve is shipped from the factory in a slave configuration. The pressure generated
within the distribution manifold by the discharge of the master valve(s) actuates the slave
valves. The minimum pressure required to open the valve is 100-110 psig (689-758 kPa) at
o o
70 F (21 C). A minimum of one slave valve must be converted to a master valve in order for
the system to operate.
See Section 1.7 for valve actuation components.
NOTE: Systems with two cylinders or less require one 24 VDC solenoid actuator. Systems with three or more cylinders
require two 12 VDC solenoid actuators.
See Section 4.10 for actuator package assembly and installation procedures.
APPROX
NOTE: Systems having two local lever actuators must be interconnected with a connecting link assembly to allow both
master valves to be discharged concurrently with a single operation of the local lever actuators (See Section 1.7.3).

SHP PRO CONTROL SYSTEM
FIKE
SHP PRO
DESCRIPTION
The Fike SHP PRO™, (P/N 10-063) is a Conventional Control system designed to
provide a sophisticated, reliable conventional detection system for use with clean
agent extinguishing, sprinkler pre-action/deluge, watermist, waterflow alarm and fire
alarm systems. It is a microprocessor based system which can be easily configured
for a wide range of suppression applications.
The SHP PRO is designed for use with Fike Clean Agent Fire Suppressant, CO2, or
sprinkler (pre-action/deluge) suppression systems. The main controller contains all
electronics required for a complete detection and control system suitable for most
applications. Optional modules, which plug into the main circuit board, are available
to add increased functionality to the system.
The SHP PRO provides 10 Status LEDs (AC Normal, Alarm , PreDischarge,
Release, Supervisory, Trouble, Panel Silenced, Abort, Release Disabled, Ground APPROVALS
Fault) for instant feedback. A diagnostic LED display is provided to help trouble • UL S2203
shoot any potential field problems, provide current status and retain stored events. • FM 3017159
A Reset and Silence switch is provided to allow control of the system outputs and • CSFM 1765-0900: 135
operation. • MEA 461-04-E
The SHP PRO can be configured for either one or two conventional detection circuits. The detection circuits can be
configured for sequential detection, cross zone or single detector release.
Depending on the configuration selected, the SHP PRO also provides up to three initiating circuits to monitor contact
devices (Abort, Manual Release, Waterflow or Supervisory switches). Four different abort types are available including a
special NYC option. All five initiating circuits can be converted to Class A operation via the SHP PRO Class A Input
Module, P/N 10-2450. All SHP PRO initiating circuits are inherently power limited. A twelve position dip switch is used
to set all options.
Three notification appliance circuits, rated for 2 amps @ 24 VDC are available. Depending on the configuration, each
circuit will provide distinct signaling for Alarm, PreDischarge, or Release conditions. Separate Agent Release and Solenoid
circuits are provided to operate the suppression system. A dedicated Disable switch is provided for release and audible
outputs. All output circuits, including solenoid and agent release circuits, are power limited.
The SHP PRO provides dedicated alarm, trouble and supervisory SPDT contacts for annunciation and control. If
additional outputs are required, up to two CRM4 Relay Modules can be added. (P/N 10-2204)
The SHP PRO is available in multiple hardware configurations, depending on the input power source (120 or 240 VAC),
enclosure color (Gray or Red), and mode of operation (Clean Agent, Clean Agent/Sprinkler, Sprinkler, Watermist,
Solenoid Releasing). The system comes equipped with a 4.0 amp @ 24 VDC power source.
The system has been designed to comply with the following standards:

Electrical Signaling
Electrical protective signaling systems are configurations of components used to produce alarm signals indicative of fire,
smoke, sprinkler waterflow or other emergency and to produce supervisory signals indicative of conditions needing attention
with respect to protection equipment or watch service. System configurations are classified according to where and how the
signals are received. The categories are commonly designated as local, municipal, remote station, proprietary, emergency
voice/alarm communication, emergency communication, and central station. Auxiliary systems are either local or proprietary
systems interconnected with a municipal system.
This category presents the major system component categories and the integrated system configurations. The selection of
components to form a hybrid system should be made only by those skilled in system design. Also, the suitability of any
system application should be judged on the basis of the hazard(s) being protected.

Electrical Signaling
Electrical protective signaling systems are configurations of components used to produce alarm signals indicative of fire, smoke, sprinkler
waterflow or other emergency and to produce supervisory signals indicative of conditions needing attention with respect to protection
equipment or watch service. System configurations are classified according to where and how the signals are received. The categories are
commonly designated as local, municipal, remote station, proprietary, emergency voice/alarm communication, emergency communication,
and central station. Auxiliary systems are either local or proprietary systems interconnected with a municipal system.
This category presents the major system component categories and the integrated system configurations. The selection of components to
form a hybrid system should be made only by those skilled in system design. Also, the suitability of any system application should be judged
on the basis of the hazard(s) being protected.
Notification Appliances
These audible and visual signaling devices are used to indicate alarms, supervisory signals and equipment trouble conditions. Audible
devices take the form of bells, horns, electronic tone generators, buzzers and chimes. Speakers for emergency voice communication also
are often included in signaling systems. Because distinctive signals are necessary, more than one type of device may be needed in a system,
or devices capable of producing coded signals may be used. Visual signals may be produced by lamp type or target type annunciators.
Printers, code registers and CRT displays also are often included in signaling systems. See also EMERGENCY VOICE/ALARM
COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS.

Notification Appliances
These audible and visual signaling devices are used to indicate alarms, supervisory signals and equipment trouble
conditions. Audible devices take the form of bells, horns, electronic tone generators, buzzers and chimes. Speakers for
emergency voice communication also are often included in signaling systems. Because distinctive signals are necessary,
more than one type of device may be needed in a system, or devices capable of producing coded signals may be used. Visual
signals may be produced by lamp type or target type annunciators. Printers, code registers and CRT displays also are often
included in signaling systems. See also EMERGENCY VOICE/ALARM COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS.

The high-pressure discharge from CO2 system nozzles can produce significant noise and a cold, fog-like effect, potentially causing frostbite upon contact with skin. This risk is mitigated by confining exposure to areas near the nozzles and ensuring proper personnel safety guidelines, including protective equipment and training .
CO2 is unsuitable for reactive metals like sodium, lithium, and magnesium because these materials can react violently with CO2, potentially exacerbating the fire. This makes it dangerous to use CO2 for fire suppression in such scenarios, requiring alternative agents .
CO2 is suitable for Class A fires involving wood, paper, cloth, Class B fires involving flammable liquids, and Class C fires involving electrical equipment due to its inert, non-conductive nature. It reduces oxygen levels to suppress fire. However, it is unsuitable for fires involving materials with their own oxygen supply or reactive metals because CO2 won't effectively extinguish these types .
Personnel safety precautions include providing open aisle ways and clearly marked exit routes, emergency lighting, audible/visual alarms, a delay in CO2 discharge to allow evacuation, outward swinging self-closing doors, and continuous alarms at entries to safeguard against CO2 exposure. Ventilation after discharge is critical to ensure only fresh air remains .
Preventing CO2 migration is crucial to avoid dangerous concentrations in adjacent spaces. Strategies include sealing protected areas, utilizing appropriate ventilation systems, and warning personnel using continuous alarms and safety signs. These measures ensure safety until the CO2 dissipates or is ventilated .
CO2 discharge resembles a cloud due to rapid vaporization and chilling of atmospheric moisture, creating a fogging effect. This can impede visibility, necessitating additional safety measures such as effective emergency lighting and trained response teams to handle the situation safely .
CO2 is stored in high-pressure spun-steel cylinders at 850 psig, maintaining it in a liquid/vapor state. Storage considerations include temperature control, monitoring for leaks, and ensuring equipment integrity to prevent accidental releases or pressure build-up .
CO2 vaporizes completely after discharge, leaving no residue, which negates the cleanup costs and downtime commonly associated with water, foam, or dry chemical systems, which can cause peripheral damage .
CO2 discharge has a cooling effect because it vaporizes rapidly at a low temperature, cooling the surrounding atmosphere. This not only aids in extinguishing fires by reducing heat but also inhibits re-ignition, enhancing the overall effectiveness of fire suppression .
CO2's non-reactivity with fires involving materials that have their own oxygen supply, like cellulose nitrate or reactive metals, shows its limitations. These materials continue to oxidize and combust even in low-oxygen conditions, highlighting the need for different suppression strategies in such cases .
