litres)
Countable: (many, a lot of, a few, few)
Positive Statements:
• Peter has many friends. - a relatively large quantity of
countable items.
• Peter has a lot of/lots of friends. - a relatively large
quantity of countable items.
• Peter has (more than) enough friends. – a standard number
most people would accept as ok.
• Peter has too many friends.
Questions:
• How many friends does Peter have?

A lot - A large quantity when speaking generally.
Negative statements:
• Peter does not have many friends.
• Peter does not have a lot of friends.
For small quantities of countable items (few, a few):
• Peter has few friends. (Peter only has a small number of
friends and this is less than expected)
• Peter has a few friends. (Peter only has a small number
of friends)
• How few friends does Peter have?

Measurable (uncountable):
Positive Statements: (a lot of, much
Peter has a lot of gold. - a relatively large quantity of
measurable goods.
Questions:
How much gold does Peter have?
How a lot of gold does Peter have?
How much is a lot of gold?
Negations:
Peter doesn’t have much gold.
Peter doesn’t have a lot of gold.
For small amounts of measurable goods:
• Peter has a little gold./Peter has a little bit of gold.
• Peter has little gold. (Peter only has a small amount of
gold and this is less than expected)
• How much gold is a little gold?/How much gold does Peter
have?
• Peter does not have a little gold.
Any:
• Peter does not have any friends.
• Peter does not have any gold.
• Does Peter have any friends? -> The possibility of zero
friends is open.
Some and any:
• Do you have some milk?
• Do you have any milk?
• Would you like some coffee?
• I think there is some coffee?
