Introduction:-

Adulterants are any unwanted chemical substances which are added to food to gain profit. This
practice spans domains like food, cosmetics, meds, fuel, and diverse chemicals. The outcomes
concern safety and efficacy, potentially endangering users. This holds relevance for scientific
study, delving into substance interactions and implications.

Adulteration constitutes a legal violation. When food products fall short of government-
established standards, they are deemed adulterated. Adulterants are used to enhance the
physical appearance of food, especially fruits and vegetables. They are used to artificially ripen
fruits to avoid the wait for natural ripening.
Artificial sweetening and colouring agents are also employed.

Aim:
To find common food adulterants in pepper and chilli powder.

Materials Required:
Pepper(as per need)

Chilli powder (as per need)

Distilled water (as per need)

Beakers:2

Theory:-
Chilli powder usually contains brick powder to increase quantities of the product. Additionally,
red colour is also added to chilli powder to enhance its appearance. Chilli powder is insoluble in
water, hence, it Should not leave any trace of colour in the water. Brick powder is also insoluble
in water but it is heavier than chilli powder, hence, it settles down.

Pepper is adulterated by adding papaya seeds to it, again, to increase its quantity. Papaya seeds
are lighter than pepper, as a result, they float on the water surface while pepper sinks.
Procedure:-
Take two clean beakers and fill them with distilled water.

Add a teaspoon of chilli powder in one beaker and stir.

Add a teaspoon of pepper to the other beaker.

Leave the beakers undisturbed for some time.

Note down your observations.

Result:-
Brick powder and red colour dye is found in chilli powder.

Papaya seeds are found in pepper.

Conclusion:-
We can conclude from this experiment that commonly bought food products from popular
brands contain adulterants, here, brick powder and Papaya seeds in chilli powder and pepper
respectively. This raises concerns about food safety and authenticity of food products. Laws
need to be enforced more effectively to regulate adulteration and safeguard consumer health
and trust in the industry.

Application:-
This experiment allows consumer to check food quality and integrity by themselves. It can help
consumer become more aware and make informed decisions when purchasing food products.
