Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the research design, research setting,

respondents and sampling procedure, data collection and statistical

treatment of data.

Research Design

This study employed descriptive research, particularly survey research

design. According to Raagas (2010), descriptive research describes and

interprets what is. Survey research refers to the use of standardized

questionnaires or interviews to collect data about people and their

preferences, thoughts, and behaviors in a systematic manner

(Bhattacherjee, 2012).

Research Setting

This study will be conducted at Xavier University Junior High School.

The school is located at El Camino Real, Pueblo de Oro, Cagayan de Oro City.

Xavier University Junior High School is a K-12 ready school, aligned with the

university’s vision: To be a leading ASEAN university forming leaders of

character by 2033.

Sampling Procedure
This study uses voluntary response sampling which is a non-probability

sampling technique where participants choose to participate in a survey,

rather than being selected by the researcher. The researcher selected the

Grade 9 level to participate in the study since they have been in school long

enough to evaluate the maintenance of the school facilities. Each Grade 9

class has a maximum of 45 members with students aged 14 -16. Out of the

10 sections in Grade 9, only 5 will be selected and from each of the 5

classes, only those who agree to answer the survey will be considered.

Data Gathering Procedure

The data will be gathered through the collection of survey

questionnaires. A cover letter indicating the purpose of the study as well as

outlining the risks and benefits of the study were included in the

questionnaire. The researchers wrote a letter to the principal for permission

to gather data. The research will be conducted in a span of 2 weeks,

presumably on the 2nd and 3rd week of January 2021 (target data

collection dates). The researchers will distribute the questionnaires during

recess time and will collect them after lunch break. An assigned member will

take charge of collecting the questionnaires per section.

Once the data collection is done, the researchers will then be tallying the

responses of the students which would be analyzed using frequency,

percentages and means.

Upon conclusion of this research, the results of the study will be forwarded

through printed copies to Ms. Katrina A. Neri (English teacher’s name),

Grade 10 Xavier’s (Section) English teacher. Said copy will also be

forwarded to the school learning resource center (LRC) as reference for

future researchers.

The records of this study will be kept private. The participants will be

given pseudonyms or codes for identification and will not be identified in any

written or verbal form. Research documents will be stored securely and will

only be accessed by the researcher. All information collected is kept strictly

confidential. Confidentiality, privacy and anonymity were ensured in the

collection, storage and publication of research material. The data generated

during the research are kept securely in paper or electronic form for a period

of ten years after the completion of this research project. Only the

researcher can access and has a copy of the unprocessed data which

includes actual questionnaires gathered from the respondents.

Research Instruments

The research instrument contains questions about the students’

perceptions on the school comfort rooms. It contains a series of profiling

questions which include sex and frequency of comfort room use, as well as

10 questions which lead to more information about variables such as

cleanliness and functionality.

Scoring Guidelines
The variables will be scored according to the following:

Nominal

Sex

Male Superior

Female Average

Under nominal, the sexes are assigned numbers. Male is assigned 1, female

is assigned 2.

Ordinal

Perspective

Never 1

Rarely 2

Sometimes 3

Always 4

Under ordinal, the responses are given values. In this case, the more often

the response, the higher the number. Once again, the lowest scale reflects
the ‘negative’ aspect of the value in this case ‘Never’, while the highest scale

reflects the ‘positive’ aspect of the value, which is ‘Always’.

Statistical Treatment

Data from the questionnaire will be analyzed using simple descriptive

measures such as frequencies, percentages and means.

The data will be summarized into charts and general tables showing

the responses and its percentage distribution.

Common questions

Including statistical treatments like frequency, percentage, and means is significant because these measures help summarize and interpret the data efficiently. They provide clear, quantifiable insights into the surveyed students’ responses, facilitating comparison of different perceptions on school comfort rooms. For instance, they can illustrate the prevalence of certain opinions (through frequencies), relative proportions (through percentages), and central tendencies (through means) within the dataset, thus enhancing the comprehensibility of the findings .

Confidentiality of the raw data is maintained by securing the data in both paper and electronic forms for a period of ten years post-research. Only the researcher has access to the unprocessed data, which ensures that the information remains private. Furthermore, assigning pseudonyms or codes to participants helps protect their identities, thus maintaining confidentiality throughout the research process and in any subsequent storage .

Distributing and collecting the questionnaires at specific times, such as during recess and after lunch breaks, minimizes disruption to the students' regular schedule and increases the likelihood of response completion. This timing strategy may enhance response rates and ensure that the collected data reflects genuine and considered student perceptions rather than rushed or incomplete answers. However, the fixed timing may also omit inputs from students who are unavailable or uninterested at these times, impacting overall participation .

Focusing the survey on Grade 9 students limits the scope of the research findings to this specific group. Their perceptions may not fully represent the experiences and views of students in other grades, particularly since younger or older students might have different perspectives on school facility maintenance. This focused sampling, however, narrows the analysis to students who are likely more familiar with the school's facilities, which may provide a more detailed understanding within this subset but restricts broader applicability outside of the Grade 9 context .

Assigning numerical values to ordinal variables allows the researchers to quantify qualitative data which facilitates statistical analysis such as calculating frequencies, percentages, and means. This quantification can reveal patterns and trends in student perceptions, for instance, measuring how often certain perceptions occur. However, it is crucial to interpret these numerical values correctly, as ordinal variables indicate rank order without assuming equal intervals between categories, requiring careful consideration in analysis .

The research methodology includes several ethical considerations such as maintaining confidentiality by assigning pseudonyms or codes to participants so that they are not identified in any written or verbal form. Additionally, the data collected is kept strictly confidential and stored securely, with access limited to the researcher only. These measures ensure the privacy and anonymity of all student participants in the study .

The research setting at Xavier University Junior High School provides a contextual framework that influences student perceptions, particularly around facilities and school environment. Being a K-12 ready institution with a specific knowledge ecosystem and cultural environment, this setting impacts how students perceive and interact with their surroundings. The setting becomes pivotal as it embodies the conditions under which the students form their perceptions, influencing variables like comfort, practicality, and familiarity, thereby shaping the survey results .

Voluntary response sampling may compromise the validity of the study’s results because it can introduce a self-selection bias, where the respondents who choose to participate might not be representative of the entire population. This can lead to results that reflect the views of more motivated or opinionated students rather than a balanced view from the Grade 9 level overall, potentially skewing perspectives on issues like school facility maintenance. This limitation is offset by the clarity of focus on students who feel most strongly about the issues, but it does not ensure the findings represent the broader student body .

The inclusion of a cover letter enhances the informed consent process by clearly communicating the purpose, risks, and benefits of the research to potential participants. It provides essential information that can help respondents make an informed decision about their participation, ensuring ethical compliance and respect for autonomy. Moreover, this approach reinforces transparency and encourages voluntary engagement, which is crucial in a volitional sampling framework, thereby strengthening the credibility and ethical footing of the study .

The use of a descriptive survey research design aligns with the aim of gathering student perceptions as it allows for the systematic collection of data via standardized questionnaires. This method provides a framework to interpret student preferences, thoughts, and behaviors effectively, which is central to understanding their perceptions about the school facilities. By conducting the survey within a controlled school setting during specific times, it ensures the responses are reliable and relevant to the study objectives .
