The Job Interview
WHAT IS IT AND ITS PURPOSE?
A job interview is one of the most important steps in obtaining a job. An interview
occurs after you have turned in a job application, and the application has been
screened by the employer. Employers often select only a handful applicants that
they consider to be good job candidates. These candidates are then asked to come
in for a formal interview. The interview is performed by a manager. Some interviews
may be performed by two or more managers.
In an interview, the job
candidate will be asked a variety
of questions. The interviewer
(manager) is trying to discover
Bialasiewicz [Link]
what type of worker you will be
and if you will fit in with the
culture of the company.
Therefore, the job candidate will
be asked questions about their
skills, talents, goals, and past
work experience.
Though your responses to the questions are important for an employer in
determining what type of worker you are, it is not the only way they judge you.
During the interview, they will also be judging your non-verbal communication skills
such as body language, gestures, and appearance. Non-verbal communication plays
a large part with managers when making their final choice. About 55 percent of the
way we communicate (send messages to others) is through body language.
Managers will often determine your level of confidence, enthusiasm, work ethic, and
professionalism by analyzing your body language and appearance.

The Job Interview
PREPARING FOR AN INTERVIEW
Most people fear a job interview and
are very nervous. However, with the
right preparation, a person can
significantly increase their chances of
success and lower their anxiety level.
Job candidates that prepare for a job
interview are much more likely to
obtain the job than those that do not.
zetwe [Link]
The key to success is to prepare and
practice. The more you practice
interviewing, the easier it will become.
The first step in achieving success in an interview is to research the company you will
be interviewed by. Before the interview, it will be important to find out some key
information about the business or organization. In the interview, employers will
expect you to have some general knowledge about the company. In fact, a very
common question asked is, “What do you know about our company?” Not being able
to answer this question properly can hurt your chances. Candidates that do
effectively respond are looked at as being serious and enthusiastic about the job.
There are several ways in which you can gain valuable information about a business.
If the company has a website, a person can go to their homepage. A company’s
website often has an abundance of useful information. A person can also use the
library, career center or perform a general internet search to obtain information. It is
recommended that you write a list of basic facts about the company such as the size
of the company, the amount of employees, who the president of the company is,
products or services offered, who their customers are, and any other facts you might
find interesting or important.
Answer each question with a complete sentence on a separate piece of paper.
1. You can increase your chances of success with an interview and lower your
anxiety by doing what?
2. The first step in succeeding at a job interview is to do what?
3. Employers will expect you to know what?
4. What is a very common question asked in an interview?
5. How will effectively responding to the question “What do you know about our
company?” make you appear.
6. What are three ways you can gain information about a business?
©Career and Life Skills Lessons, All Rights Reserved
The second step to a successful job
interview is to prepare your answers to
questions that you will most likely be
. asked. Though you will not know the exact
questions, most employers tend to use
similar interview questions. There are at
least ten interview questions that you
get4net [Link]
should master; these are considered the
most asked interview questions by
employers.
You should go through each
question beforehand, thinking of
how best to respond to each
one. You will want to write out
each response. It is important
that you answer each question
with a complete sentence,
repeating the key part of the
question. For instance, if you
were asked “What do you
consider to be your greatest
strength?” you should respond
by saying, “I consider my
greatest strength to be my
strong work ethic.” Responding
with complete sentences
clarifies your answers and
highlights strong communication
skills.
7. What is the second step to ensuring you have a successful job interview?
8. What interview questions do most employers use?
9. For each of the commonly used interview questions, what should you do?
[Link] writing responses to the interview questions, how should you write
them down and respond to them?
[Link] is it important to practice answering each question with a complete
sentence?

Some of the ten interview questions can be more challenging than others. In fact,
there are a few that regularly trip up interviewees. One of these is the question,
“Do you have any weaknesses?” Often, in an interview, people say they don’t
have any weaknesses. This is not an appropriate response. We all have
weaknesses. You will want to select one weakness that is minor and doesn’t
jeopardize your chances. Further, after you declare a weakness to the
interviewer, it is recommended to tell them that you are working on improving it.
For instance, an appropriate response would look something like this, “One of my
weaknesses is that sometimes I forget things; however, I am working on
improving it by using a notepad.”
Another question that many people don’t answer correctly is “Do you have any
questions for me?” This question is asked at the end of an interview and is a
very important question. You don’t want to say, “No.” You will want to ask at
least one appropriate question. Asking a question shows that you are interested
and eager to learn. A few good questions you can ask could be; “Are there
opportunities for advancement? Does the company provide training? What has
your experience been with this company?” However, there is one question you
don’t and shouldn’t ever ask in an interview, “How much does the job pay?” It is
considered inappropriate and is an interview killer. Pay is only discussed and
negotiated after an employer offers a job candidate a position

BODY LANGUAGE, EYE CONTACT, AND TONE
After you have prepared the responses,
step three is to practice. Practice
answering interview questions with
complete sentences. Practice answering
interview questions by yourself and then
practice with a friend or family member.
mathibfa [Link]
Also, it is essential to practice key non-
verbal communication skills. Practice the
correct body language, eye contact, and
tone of voice. Remember these will be
judged by the interviewer as well.
First impressions do matter. Over 30 percent of employers know within 90
seconds if they are going to hire someone. Therefore, it wise to start off with
mastering the introduction and greeting. When you introduce yourself, you will
need to give a warm greeting and make eye contact. Introduce your first and last
name. The right handshake is critical and should be practiced until perfected. A
proper handshake and introduction send the message of professionalism and
confidence to the interviewer.
The second key non-verbal communication skill that you will need to be aware of
and practice is good posture. When you take a seat, you will need to make sure to
sit up straight and keep good posture throughout the meeting. Also, be aware of
your hands, don’t place them in your pockets, don’t tap the desk, or run your
hands through your hair. If you have a good posture and are in control your hands,
you are sending the message that you are confident, serious, and disciplined.
Answer each question with a complete sentence on a separate piece of paper.

2. Besides practicing answering the questions, what else is it essential to practice?
3. Why is the first impression important in an interview?
4. What behavior, should you start off mastering?
5. When you introduce yourself at an interview, how should it be done?
6. How should you sit during an interview?
7. What should you not do with your hands?
8. What message does good posture send to the interviewer?
©Career and Life Skills Lessons, All Rights Reserved
Eye contact during an interview is another important non-verbal communication skill
that should be mastered. Close to 70 percent of employers, say that poor eye
contact is a serious mistake made by interviewees. Proper eye contact shows that
you are listening, confident, and trustworthy. However, you do need to be careful not
to stare, which could make the person uncomfortable. Healthy eye contact is when
a person maintains natural and friendly eye contact, taking brief breaks but
reconnecting throughout the conversation.
Working on your tone of voice is also important because it is a method in how
we send messages. Tone is based on how we say something and includes
inflection of your voice and facial expressions. Tone reveals our emotions and
how we feel. For instance, tone can tell someone that you are pleasant, angry,
scared, happy, nervous, and confident. For the right tone to be sent, you must
believe in yourself, display confidence, and be positive. When answering
questions, don’t speak too rapidly and make sure to pause before answering
each question.
After you have practiced interviewing with a friend or family member and you
feel confident, you will want to have a trusted professional interview you.
Preferably someone you don’t know well but is respected. Challenging yourself
will only make you a better interviewee.

Beside body language, the interviewer will also be judging your
appearance. They will be looking at how you are dressed and
groomed. Groomed means having a clean and neat appearance.
What should you wear? What you should wear depends on the
company you are interviewing. To determine how you should dress
you should learn the culture of company. Knowing the culture of the
company will give you an idea how you should dress. For example, if
the company has a casual culture, then you may need to dress more
causal. However, in most cases it is best to dress up. A common
mistake many people make is they don’t dress professionally. When
