INFORMATIVE WRITING

Informative writing explains a specific topic. The information included in informative

texts is grounded on facts. Examples of informative or informational texts include
descriptions, sequence, cause and effects, problem-solution, and comparison and contrast
articles.

An informative text educates readers about a topic or subject. It is meant to inform

others using credible sources as evidence – facts, statistics, and research. Informative texts
usually answer the five Ws: who, where, when, what, and why. Sometimes, they also answer
“how”, which shows how to accomplish something.

When choosing a topic for informative writing, it should not be too broad or too narrow.
For example, you will not choose special education as the topic itself, because it has a big
scope. Rather, you can be more specific and select causes of hearing impairment as your
topic. On the other hand, a topic is too narrow when there are limited or no credible sources
of evidence that can support your writing. A topic is too broad if you cannot explain it in one
or two pages.

Just like any type of writing, informative texts follow a structure – the introduction,
body, and conclusion.

Informative essays vary in length, but all good informative pieces are a product of an
application of several writing techniques. Below are some of the best tips/techniques to help
you write an excellent informative text.

1. Open with an attention grabber and conclude with a summary of the main points of the
essay.

2. Use appropriate transitional words to ensure the logical flow of ideas.

3. Observe formal tone.

4. Utilize proper language and applicable vocabulary to the topic. Similarly, avoid biased
language.

5. Make use of formatting, nonlinear texts such as flowcharts, graphs, graphic organizers, and
digital texts with hyperlinks when needed.

Types of Informative Essay

Descriptive Essay
A descriptive essay is an essay that describes something about an event, person, place, or
idea in detail. The descriptive essay aims to provide enough information to the readers to
visualize or imagine the matter described.

It tells about a person, event, or situation to make readers imagine it.

The actual purpose of a descriptive essay is to provide a real image to the reader through a
detailed description. It is where the writer is painting a picture in words.

Cause and Effect Essay

The cause and effect essay describes the cause of an event or idea and then explains its
effects on today’s world, environment, and people. Also, this type of essay is a common form
of organization in academic writing.

However, the cause and effect essay requires strong research skills. Without them, your essay
will not become a successful piece of writing.
It gives the connection between two things. These essays can be argumentative if you
establish cause and effect, but they are informative if you analyze connections.

Compare and Contrast Essay

In a compare and contrast essay, the writer discusses the similarities and differences between
two or more things. This type of essay also requires strong critical thinking skills.

Therefore, when you start writing the compare and contrast essay, you should identify and
analyze the subject from all angles and characteristics.

Tells about the similarities and differences between two related things.

Process Essay
The process essay is also known as the “How-To” essay. This essay describes the process of a
phenomenon. The writer provides detailed information about the process of doing something.

Explain how something appeared or how to do this or that thing.

Problem-Solution Essay
It is another common type of informative essay in which you describe a problem and then
propose its solution. Its main purpose is to educate the readers on the problem and its
significance.

It describes a problem and share solutions to it. These essays can be persuasive if you try to
represent one solution better than others, but they are informative if you present various
possible solutions.

Expository Essay
The expository essay explains, illustrates, or interprets something in a way that becomes easy
for the readers. This essay provides a fair analysis of the subject based on facts without the
writer’s opinions.

The use of nonlinear texts, such as graphs and flowcharts, can enhance an informative essay by visually representing complex data or processes, making information more accessible and easier to understand. Such elements can break down information into more digestible pieces, appeal to visual learners, and provide alternative perspectives that complement the written content, ultimately strengthening the overall communication of ideas .

An essay becomes too broad when the topic cannot be adequately covered within the space constraints, while it becomes too narrow when there is insufficient credible evidence to support the content. For example, rather than writing about 'special education,' one might focus on 'causes of hearing impairment' .

Compare and contrast essays utilize strong critical thinking skills by requiring the writer to thoroughly examine the similarities and differences between two or more subjects. Transitional words connect sentences and paragraphs, ensuring a smooth progression between concepts. A formal tone maintains professionalism and objectivity, which is important for credibility and clarity in conveying factual information .

The key characteristic that differentiates a process essay from other informative essays is its focus on describing the step-by-step process of doing something or explaining how something occurred. This type of essay provides detailed instructions or information to guide the reader through the process or to explain the sequence of events .

Informative essays, particularly cause and effect essays, can be considered both argumentative and informative based on their approach. They are argumentative if the essay aims to establish and persuade readers about a cause-effect relationship. In contrast, they remain informative if the primary goal is to analyze and explain the connections between events or ideas without advocating for a specific point of view .

The structure of introduction, body, and conclusion is crucial in informative essays as it organizes information logically, guiding the reader through the content. The introduction sets the stage and grabs attention, the body presents detailed and organized information, and the conclusion summarizes and reinforces the key points. This structured approach enhances the essay's effectiveness by ensuring clarity and comprehensibility, facilitating the reader's understanding .
