Guidelines on the Rites for Celebrating Marriage during Mass in the Archdiocese of Lipa
MINISTRY ON LITURGY ARCHDIOCESE OF LIPA, PHILIPPINES MARCH 2019 VOL. 3, NO. 5
LITURGY UPDATES
Mam/ Sir:
In compliance with the instruction given to the Archdiocesan Ministry on Liturgy, by Most Reverend Gilbert A.
Garcera, D.D Archbishop of Lipa, we are extending to you this information for the in-house/ Resident Wedding Coordinators,
Coordinators, and couples:
CONDITION OF THE CELEBRATION OF MARRIAGE IN VIEW OF FORMING PARISH WEDDING COORDINATORS
The formation of the in-house or resident Parish Wedding Coordinators is an attempt to address these concerns. The following has to be kept
in mind:
1. The services to be rendered by the in-house or resident parish wedding coordinators are free of charge.
2. Their services are limited to the celebrations that will transpire in the church
3. The parish wedding coordinators will make sure that the rules and regulations as regards the celebrations of marriage in the Archdiocese
of Lipa, implemented faithfully and properly.
4. The parish wedding coordinators do not replace the wedding coordinators or planners personally chosen by the couple.
5. It is the duty of the wedding coordinators or planners personally chosen by the couple to coordinate well with the parish wedding
coordinators in order to clarify all concerns related to the Sacrament of Matrimony. Nothing outside the agreement must be done during the
day of the wedding.
SOME SPECIFIC CONCERNS:
1. Attire: All who will participate in the celebration in the church must follow and respect the approved attire during liturgical celebrations for
the Archdiocese of Lipa, which befits the sanctity of the celebration.
2. Flowers & Decors:
a. On Advent: flowers are decorated moderately.
b. On Lent: flowers are ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED. The prohibition of the flowers during Lent is part of the disciple of fasting-the fasting of
the eyes. During Lent, it is improper to replace flowers with plants.
3. Music
a. On Advent: the use of organ and other musical instruments should be done in a moderate manner.
b. On Lent: Musical instruments may be played only to give necessary support to singing. Couples must respect
the special nature of the season of Lent, and must refrain from much pomp and display.
c. Only liturgical songs are permitted to be sung in the celebrations.
d. Religious songs which are not liturgical, may be sung in the church but not during liturgical celebrations.
e. Secular and love songs are absolutely prohibited to be sung in the church. Even instrumental love songs are prohibited in the church.
f. The commission on Sacred Music of the Archdiocese of Lipa has prepared a repertoire of songs which may be used during weddings.
There are also approved songs which may be used when the bride walks down the aisle.
g. Profane bridal march music and profane songs are prohibited.
4. Decorations: the decorations must not hinder the view of the most important sacred furnishings like the altar table, ambo, and the chair of
the celebrant. Decorating for the sake of pomp or display is prohibited.
5. Closing the doors before the entrance of the bride is strictly prohibited in as much as it is devoid of any spiritual meaning related to
marriage.
6. Personal vows in any part of the marriage rite in the mass are absolutely prohibited in the Archdiocese of Lipa. It is not within the authority
of the officiating priest, whether he serves in the Archdiocese or guest priest, to permit personal vows.
7. Unity candle is not permitted in the Archdiocese. Unity is shown by the other symbols, most prominently through the cord.
8. Photographers & Videographers:
a. They must keep proper decorum in the church, as approved by the Archdiocese of Lipa
b. They must avoid the mentality that the church is transformed like a studio.
c. They must avoid unnecessary movements as these can be the cause of the distractions in the mass.
d. They must perform their duties in a sober manner.
e. Smoking, using of prohibited drugs and drinking alcoholic beverages are prohibited within the church compound.
f. They must show due respect to the tabernacle, the altar, the ambo and the celebrant.
g. Same day edit videos (SDE’S) must not be done inside the church while mass in ongoing. They must look for another place to the SDE.
9. Wedding Entourage:
a. Little bride & little groom are not allowed in the Archdiocese of Lipa.
b. Secondary Sponsors are limited only to those who are in need for the celebration. Unnecessary multiplication is not permitted.
10. Liturgy of the Word: Readers must be well prepared to function in the mass. They must observe proper decorum as readers of the word
of God.
11. Flower Girls and Bearers must be 7 years old and above and must have first communion

"Wedding Marches" by Wagner and Mendelssohn have nothing to do with the Sacred Liturgy and may not be used. In fact, the origin of
these compositions borders on the profane and the ridiculous. The "Bridal Chorus" ("Here Comes the Bride") from Wagner's opera,
Lohengrin, accompanies an illicit ceremony. Mendelssohn's incidental music to Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream accompanies a
fake wedding. The two music are from opera and considered secular music.

RULES & REGULATIONS
for the Use of the Transfiguration Chapel & Venues for Reception
1. Caleruega Philippines, as a Dominican institution, adheres faithfully to the teachings of the Magisterium. We comply strictly
with the liturgical rules established by the Church in general and the Archdiocese of Lipa and the Parish of San Antonio de
Padua, Barangay Kaylaway, Nasugbu, Batangas in particular.
2. We believe that celebrating the Sacrament of the Eucharist is the highest form of worship (CCC 1324), and we celebrate it
with utmost reverence with the people of God. Thus, we also expect all people present inside the chapel or the place of the
assembly to do the same.
3. Caleruega Philippines, originally designed as a retreat house, is a place of prayer and silence. While we allow the
celebrations of weddings and receptions in the retreat areas, we expect our guests and wedding suppliers to be constantly
mindful of the original intent of the place. When the retreat house is free from other guests and has no retreatants, we can
be more lenient regarding silence.
4. 'Time is gold.' We start the liturgical celebrations on time. Thus, we expect the florists, wedding coordinators,
photographers and videographers, choirs and servers in the Mass, and the food providers always to be mindful of the
schedules.
a. The couple and their wedding coordinators are encouraged to inform everyone involved in the wedding and the reception
about the schedules they need to observe.
b. The wedding procession of the entourage should be thirty minutes ahead of the start of the Wedding Mass. (e.g., 3 pm
Wedding Mass, the wedding march must begin at least 30 minutes before 3 pm)
c. Set-Up Time For Florists:
Starts @5:00 am for Morning Weddings
Starts @1:00 pm for Afternoon Weddings
Starts @5:00 pm for Evening Weddings
d. Set-Up Time for Caterers & the Use of Venues for Reception:

this allotted time.

Afternoon Wedding - from 9 am to 11:00 pm only, fully cleared & cleaned up
Evening Wedding - from 1 pm to 1 am only, fully cleared & cleaned up.
e. We shall collect a fine of two thousand pesos (P2,000.00/hour) for excess time of use.
5. Wearing proper attire that fits your work and the sanctity of the celebration enhances credibility & commands respect. A
wedding is a social gathering and a sacrament celebrated with devotion.
Caleruega Philippines is a venue for events and a sacred place for prayer. We expect everyone to be modest and prudent in
choosing clothes to wear in Caleruega Philippines.
For those in charge of ingress & egress, please do not wear shorts, sandos, slippers, & the like. Our staff in Caleruega

8. We do our best to maintain order & cleanliness in all the areas of Caleruega Philippines. Please do your share. Observe
cleanliness all the time. We have provided color-coded trash bins for proper disposal of your rubbish.
9. Our garden is sacred. We try our best to maintain it well. Please, no picking of flowers and plants. Fine will be imposed for
violators.
10. Pets are welcome in the garden if they are friendly and wear diapers. Any damage or littering they may have caused is the
owner's responsibility. We do not allow them inside the chapel or the halls for the receptions.
11. Liturgical rules must be strictly followed:
a. If the wedding mass falls on a Sunday, we shall use the Sunday mass liturgy. It will include the 1st Readings, Responsorial
Psalm, 2nd Reading, and the Gospel for Sunday.
b. We observe proper liturgical postures in all our Eucharistic celebrations. We expect all our guests and wedding suppliers to
recognize and respect the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the altar. Observe proper genuflection in front of the
Blessed Sacrament, standing up during the proclamation of the Gospel and kneeling during the consecration.
c. The Liturgical Commission of the Archdiocese of Lipa and the Parish of San Antonio de Padua have provided a list of
prescribed liturgical songs and music for liturgical celebrations within the Archdiocese and the Parish. Songs must be sung
with devotion. Singers are not performers but are one with the people in rendering praise to the Lord. For strict compliance.
d. We comply only with the prescribed text of the Catholic wedding vow in the rite. It is concise & complete. Personal
messages or vows are allowed only in the reception venue or outside the chapel after the wedding mass.
e. The use of gadgets and cell phones throughout the wedding mass is strictly discouraged.
f. The use of a wedding missalette is not encouraged. We encourage the people of God to listen intently to the liturgy.
g. We discourage using unity candles and other fancy decorations and accessories that are not liturgically appealing; instead,
they distract people from praying solemnly. "Little bride and groom" are not allowed in Caleruega Philippines.
h. Guests who are non-Catholics and are inside our chapel for the wedding mass are expected to observe respect and proper
etiquette. While we understand that they may not want to kneel during the consecration, we request them to stand up but
not remain seated.
12. Wedding coordinators must orient all the guests attending the wedding mass about these rules and regulations to be
observed while in Caleruega Philippines.
13. Florists may set up the flower arrangements at the back of the chapel. However, please keep the passageway for the
pilgrims.
14. Flower decoration must be in moderation during the Season of Advent. During Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday until
Holy Week, there should be no flowers as the Church prescribes.
Clean as you go. The florist must pull out all the flowers and stand after the wedding mass.
15. Photographers and videographers must plan their shots and movements inside the chapel, especially when the celebration
has begun, to lessen the noise and distractions they create. Arrive ahead of time. No editing is allowed inside the chapel or
even at the sides. Use the kiosks at the Tuktok for editing activities.
16. We only allow the use of fireworks and firecrackers outside Caleruega Philippines. Event organizers should take the
necessary precautions and secure permission from the proper authorities before this event.
17. We have a designated parking area for wedding participants & guests that's for free. Please coordinate with our security
personnel.
18. Be accountable for whatever damage incurred on the property of Caleruega during the working period. Replacement and
repair of damages should be within ten working days after the incident, or we shall collect for monetary equivalent.
19. An inventory of all the items that will be brought inside Caleruega Philippines must be submitted to the security personnel
on duty before ingress. Avoid using non-recyclable materials such as glitters, plastics, and colored papers as confetti; using
nails, glue & the like is also strictly prohibited. This provision's violation results in a minimum fine of Php 5,000.00 or the
equivalent market value of the damaged property.
20. All our rules and regulations are for strict compliance.
