What’s New
Activity 1: Harmful Human Activities in the Environment
Materials:
Activity sheet
Ball pen or pencil
Procedure:
1. Analyze the illustrations below.
2. List down some harmful human activities and their effects to the environment.
3. Answer the guide questions below.
Guide Questions:
a. What are the pictures all about?
b. What harmful activities have you seen in the pictures?
c. What are the effects of these harmful activities to People? Animals? Plants?
d. What are the possible solutions for these environmental problems?
What is It
What are the things that can make you happy and feel comfortable? How can
you maintain a productive and wholesome environment?
This time, you will learn ways of conserving and protecting Intertidal Zones
and Estuaries; and the importance of protecting and conserving Intertidal Zones and
Estuaries.
Estuaries rank as the most productive ecosystem; it is located in the mouth
of the river, the part where river meets the sea. These places are populated with
mangrove and birds. It serves as "nurseries of the sea" or breeding ground of different
organisms. Some organism that lives in estuaries and intertidal zones are
mangroves, fishes, birds, crabs, shrimps, jelly fishes, snails, corals, clams, mollusks,
sea urchins, seaweeds and etc.
The coral reefs, mud flats, salt marshes and rocky shores are the habitats
found in an estuary and intertidal zones. Estuary is characterized in water density
due to varying salt concentration of fresh and salt water. The fresh water flowing in
is found at the surface but settles at the bottom.
An estuarine ecosystem has high nutrient level, attributed to the river carrying
nutrients from suspended organic and inorganic matter. Water tides also bring
organic matter from the ocean. The interaction of organisms in estuary is important
in maintaining ecological balance in ecosystem, such as phytoplankton,
zooplanktons, mussel, barnacles, sponges, fishes and crustaceans.
Some animals developed adaptation to survive the changing water levels.
Barnacles cling to rocks, clams has shells to protect them from predators and when
low-tide, they close their shells to prevent from dying. Crabs burrow in the sand to
protect themselves from heat. Shrimps, snails, mussels, fishes and seaweeds are
found in intertidal zones.
Deforestation, Improper waste disposal, burning of fossil fuels, water
pollution, industrial dirt, modification of coastal watersheds and basins, over harvest
of commercial species can threaten the system structure; Function and
sustainability of resources are factors due to imbalance of nature, intertidal zones,
is an important indicator for climate change on marine organisms. It is also a good
habitat to thousands of fishes, squids, octopus, corals, whales and sponges. It serves
as breeding ground protection and shelter of living organisms.
Ways of Conserving and Protecting Intertidal Zones and
Estuaries:
➢ Maintain clean, conducive and healthy environment.
➢ Practice proper waste disposal and recycling useful materials.
➢ Educate people and sharing facts of DENR program.
➢ Avoid using synthetic fertilizers. Instead use organic fertilizers such trimmed
grass and animal manure.
➢ Clean up animal waste.
➢ Dispose toxic products properly.
➢ Use non- toxic insecticides/pesticides. Excessive use can pollute nearby water
ways.
➢ Use natural alternatives to chemical – based household products.
➢ Maintain bodies of water clean. Avoid throwing of garbage.
➢ Do not let animals stay along the shoreline.
➢ Avoid using motorized boats in sensitive habitats.
Importance of Protecting and Conserving Intertidal Zones and
Estuaries:
➢ They help preserve the balance of nature.
➢ Living organisms depend for food.
➢ They serve as breeding ground of organisms.
➢ They filter dirt before freshwater enters the seas.
➢ They strain the salt from oceans before it flows to rivers.
➢ They protect storms and serves as an exit point for floods.
➢ They stabilize shorelines
➢ They protect coastal areas, inland habitats and human communities.
➢ Humans depend on natural ecosystem services to survive.
➢ They regulate essential ecological process and support lives.
Among these ways, which best practices did you apply at home or in
community? Do we need to protect and preserve our mother earth? If you say yes,
very Good!
What’s More
A productive and healthy environment lies in the hands of the people. In this
activity, duties and responsibilities of individual play an important role in the
protection and conservation of an ecosystem.
