incident obliquely at same angle would bend the most?

(a) Kerosene (b) Water

n t
You are given water, mustard oil, glycerine and kerosene. In which of these media a ray of light [1]

a
(c) Mustard oil (d) Glycerine

2. A student has obtained an image of a well- illuminated distant object on a screen to determine the [1]

focal length, F1 of the given spherical mirror. The teacher then gave him another mirror of focal
length, F₂ and asked him to obtain a focussed image of the same object on the same screen. The
student found that in order to focus the same object using the second mirror, he has to move the
mirror away from the screen. From this observation, it may be concluded that both the spherical

mirrors given to the student were (select the correct option)

r
(A) Concave and F1 < F2 (B) Concave and F₁> F₂ (C) Convex and F₁ <F₂ (D) Convex and F₁ >
F₂

A ray of light is incident as shown. If A, B and C are three different transparent media, then which
among the following options is true for the given diagram?

(a) ∠1 > ∠4 (b) ∠1 < ∠2 (c) ∠3 = ∠2 (d) ∠3 > ∠4

4. In which of the following, the image of an object placed at infinity will be highly diminished and point [1]
sized?
(a) Concave mirror only (b) Convex mirror only (c) Convex lens only
(d) Concave mirror, convex mirror, concave lens and convex lens

5. If an object is placed symmetrically between two plane mirrors, inclined at an angle of 72°, then total [1]
number of images formed is:
(a) 5 (b) 4 (c) 2 (d) infinite

6. A plane mirror produces a magnification of : [1]

(a) -1 (b) +1 (c) zero (d) between 0 and infinity

7. The mirror used as rear-view mirror in vehicles [1]

(a) convex mirror (b) plane mirror

(c) cylindrical mirror (d) concave mirror

Subjective - (1 Marks)

8. The magnification produced by a plane mirror is +1. What does this mean? [1]

Section B

Subjective - (2 Marks)

9. A concave mirror and a convex lens are held in water. What changes, if any, do you expect in their [2]
focal length?

10. If the image formed by a spherical mirror for all positions of the object placed in front of it is always [2]
erect and diminished, what type of mirror is it? Draw a labelled ray diagram to support your answer.

four characteristics of the image formed by the mirror.

S i
An object is placed at a distance of 30 cm in front of a convex mirror of focal length 15 cm. Write [3]

t
12. The image formed by a concave mirror is observed to be virtual, erect and larger than the object. [3]
Where should the position of the object be relative to the mirror? Draw ray diagram to justify your
answer.

13.

n
A concave mirror has a focal length of 20cm. At what distance from the mirror should a 4cm tall
object be placed so that it forms an image at a distance of 30cm from the mirror? Also, calculate the
size of the image formed.

Case-Study

s h
While dealing with the reflection of light by spherical mirrors, we follow a set of sign conventions
called the New Cartesian Sign Convention. In this convention, the pole (P) of the mirror is taken as

the origin. The principal axis of the mirror is taken as the x-axis (X'X) of the coordinate system. The
conventions are as follows:

r
(i) The object is always placed to the left of the mirror. This implies that the light from the object falls
on the mirror from the left-hand side.
(ii) All distances parallel to the principal axis are measured from the pole of the mirror.

positive. P
(iii) All the distances measured to the right of the origin (along + x-axis) are taken as positive while
those measured to the left of the origin (along - x-axis) are taken as negative.
(iv) Distances measured perpendicular to and above the principal axis (along + y-axis) are taken as

(v) Distances measured perpendicular to and below the principal axis (along-y-axis) are taken as
negative
(a) What will be the sign of the distance of an image formed on the same side as that of an object?
(b) What will be the sign of the distance of an image formed behind the mirror?
(c) What is the reference of measuring distances in case of a mirror?
Or
(c) What will be the sign of the distance measured perpendicular to the principal axis in the upward
direction?
