CEE 5470 Design for Seismic Loads

Homework 5 – Equivalent Lateral Force Procedure

Due September 29, 2023 by 5pm

You are moving on to the next part of your design for the four-story classroom building and will use the
equivalent lateral force method to determine the design loads, check story drift, and analyze the
diaphragm (see below for a specific list of deliverables).

Given Information:

• Braced frame and moment frame locations given in the plan below.
• Total seismic weight, W=9000 kips with distribution as follows: 2nd floor 2300 kips, 3rd floor
2200 kips, 4th floor 2200 kips, Penthouse floor & low roof 1600 kips, upper roof 450 kips.

Tasks for Homework 5:

1. Seismic Base Shear and Vertical Distribution using equivalent lateral force procedure
a. For the special moment frame, calculate the seismic base shear.
b. For the special concentrically braced frame, calculate the seismic base shear.
c. For the special moment frame, calculate the lateral forces at each floor.
2. Horizontal Distribution of Loads
a. Determine whether the diaphragms can be analyzed as rigid, semi-rigid, or flexible per
ASCE 7-22.
b. For the third floor, determine the loads going to each braced frame and moment frame
using rigid diaphragm analysis due to seismic forces acting in the East-West direction.
c. For the third floor, determine the loads going to each braced frame and moment frame
using flexible diaphragm analysis due to seismic forces acting in the East-West direction.
3. Story Drift and Stability
a. Determine whether the story drifts in the steel moment frame are sufficiently small
according to ASCE 7-22. Use your result from 2b to determine the lateral loads applied
to the moment frame.
b. Check the P-delta stability coefficient at the first story of the moment frame and
determine if P-delta effects need to be considered.
4. Final Design Loads for Seismic Force Resisting System
a. Calculate the redundancy factor for the moment frame.
b. Calculate the redundancy factor for the braced frame.
c. Draw a diagram of the most highly loaded moment frame with the design forces shown.
Show the design loads individually, including dead load, floor live load, roof live load,
and earthquake load.
d. List the relevant load combinations.
