Gap Analysis In The Manufacturing
Of Jacket And Trouser For Women
Abstract
Globally, the amount of clothing used is rising, and many fashion firms
are under fire for creating low-quality clothing with short lifespans,
which contributes to the already unsustainable amounts of post-
consumer waste.
The purpose is to pinpoint the reasons behind various clothing kinds'
failures and increase productivity and production efficiency.
Mainly the focus is on women’s category as the primary goal is to
increase the popularity of jackets among Indian women by creating a
suitable and cosy jacket that can be worn on a variety of occasions.
Currently, jackets are not very popular among this demographic.
Indian ladies long for a fresh appearance that incorporates traditional
elements without any judgement. When purchasing ready-to-wear
garments, women shoppers prioritise the fit of the item. "Gowns that
have the proper size & shape are defined as clothing fit," which implies
that there are two fundamental components to a garment fit: size and
shape.
Introduction
The jerkin, which gave rise to the jackets, is thought to have existed in
the Middle Ages or Early Renaissance. By the early 1700s, the jacket
was considered a required article of clothing for urban servants and
those labouring in agriculture. In the 1830s, single-breasted fitting
jackets with waist pockets, short lapels, and darts under the arms were
in style; double-breasted versions became popular in 1862. The single-
breasted Norfolk jacket was popular because of its high, elevated
neck. The three buttoned types were thought to be in style around the
end of the nineteenth century. Dinner parties were attended by
people wearing jackets with silk lapels. Flannel shirts are still worn with
sports jackets. Jackets were not just linked to formal looks in the early
2000s; they also included bomber jackets, blazers, sports jackets, and
more. (3)
The fashion clothing knowledge influences consumer confidence in
making purchase decisions about fashion. This approach enhances
both theoretical and practical level understanding the consumer
behavior related to fashion. The fashion clothing involvement is
affected by a consumer’s gender, age, degree alleged person-product
image similarity and degree of acquisitiveness.
Fitting issues in women’s apparel in India is one of the challenging
criteria for ready to wear industry which is directly related to the
body comfort and customer satisfaction. (4)
Clothing producers need to be aware of and sensitive to the fitting
preferences, concerns, and body shape and size variations of their
clients. So their should be a consumer survey which will be aligned to
the manufacturing processes.
Issues in the garment can be due to slight change in the
manufacturing process as the same design can be made different due
to the influence of the person in charge of each area was different.
Furthermore, since sewing process is labor intensive; apart from
material costs, the cost structure of the sewing process is also
important. Therefore, this process is of critical importance and needs
to be planned more carefully (10).
Research Problem Statement
Blazer is the most expensive and demanding garment in the world.
Men and women alike find this aristocratic attire intriguing. For this
reason, the majority of research is on developing blazers that can be
exported in large quantities to the global apparel manufacturing
industry. This would improve the economic situation and raise the
export value. One of the things that needs to fit exactly is a blazer
jacket. Because of the oversized trend, one can get away with wearing
loose-fitting blouses and cardigans, but blazer jackets must fit the
wearer precisely to their body proportions.(5) and apparel fit is the

Consumers today are not merely seeking products and services that
fulfill their basic needs. They are increasingly looking for experiences
that go beyond functionality and practicality. This shift in consumer
behavior can be attributed to various factors including increasing
disposable incomes, changing lifestyles, and the rise of social media
and digital connectivity.
In the contemporary market, consumers are drawn to products and
services that offer them an immersive and memorable experience. This
goes beyond the utilitarian aspect of a product or service – it
encompasses the emotional connection, the sensory engagement, and
the overall journey that accompanies the consumption process.

Gap analysis
Customers have a big impact on products at every point of their
lives, including purchase, usage, and disposal. Customers choose
when to discard clothing, but even before that, their choices at the
time of purchase—such as whether an item is well-chosen, fits
properly, and is appropriate for its intended use—as well as their
choices regarding how to use the item—that is, how to wear,
launder, and store it—as well as whether to alter or repair it when
needed—are important. (1)
So there should be a structured customer surveys which will be
aligned to the manufacturing of jacket and trouser.
The importance of a well-fitted blazer jacket cannot be overstated.
Unlike other garments where a loose or oversized fit might be
acceptable or even fashionable, a blazer jacket demands precision
in its fit to achieve the desired look and functionality.(3)
Achieving the perfect fit for a blazer is essential for both aesthetic
and functional reasons, ensuring comfort, style, and confidence in
any situation. Therefore, investing in proper manufacturing with
precise measurements is crucial for anyone looking to make a
statement with their attire.(5)
The jacket has traditionally been less popular among Indian
women, largely due to cultural and climatic factors. However,
there is a growing trend towards embracing jackets as versatile and
stylish wardrobe staples. The intention is to make jackets more
popular among Indian women by designing options that are not
only fashionable but also suitable and comfortable for various
occasions.(7)
Cultural Shift: In Indian culture, traditional attire such as sarees,
salwar suits, and lehengas have dominated women's fashion for
centuries. However, there has been a noticeable shift towards
more Westernized clothing styles, including jackets. This cultural
evolution reflects changing attitudes towards fashion and a desire
for more diverse wardrobe options.
Climate Considerations: India's diverse climate, characterized by
hot summers and mild winters in many regions, has historically
made jackets less practical for everyday wear. However, with
advancements in fabric technology and the introduction of
lightweight and breathable materials, designers are creating
jackets that are suitable for Indian weather conditions. This
includes options with breathable linings, moisture-wicking
properties, and strategic ventilation for comfort in warmer
temperatures.
Versatility: Designers are focusing on creating jackets that are
versatile enough to be worn across different occasions. Whether
it's a formal event, a casual outing, or even a traditional
celebration, there is a growing demand for jackets that can
complement various outfits and styles. This versatility enhances
the jacket's appeal and encourages women to incorporate it into
their everyday wardrobes.
Tailored Designs: Recognizing the importance of fit, designers are
offering tailored jacket designs that cater to the unique body
shapes and proportions of Indian women. This customization
ensures a flattering fit and enhances comfort, encouraging women
to feel confident and stylish when wearing jackets.
Incorporation of Ethnic Elements: To appeal to the Indian market,
designers are infusing jackets with ethnic elements and motifs,
such as intricate embroidery, embellishments, and traditional
prints. This fusion of Western silhouettes with Indian aesthetics
adds a unique flair to jackets, making them more appealing to
Indian women who value their cultural heritage.
Celebrity Endorsements and Influencer Marketing: The
endorsement of jackets by celebrities and influencers has also
contributed to their growing popularity among Indian women.
Seeing fashion icons and influencers incorporate jackets into their
outfits on social media platforms inspires women to experiment
with this versatile garment and explore its styling potential.
The issue of female customers being unfamiliar with numbered size
labels and their corresponding body types is a common challenge
in the fashion industry. This lack of knowledge about size labels
and their meanings, as well as a limited understanding of one's own
body characteristics, can lead to frustration and dissatisfaction
when shopping for ready-to-wear apparel.(8)
Little work has been done on fashion involvement per se,
particularly so with regard to a broader array of involvements in
fashion clothing.
Improving the durability of stitching methods and thread in jacket
and trouser manufacturing is crucial for enhancing the quality and
longevity of garments. Additionally, proper utilization of resources
in the garment sewing section can significantly improve the
performance of the apparel industry by reducing production costs
and minimizing wastage.
Enhancing Durability: Durability is a key factor in the quality of
garments, especially for items like jackets and trousers that are
subjected to frequent wear and tear. By implementing more
durable stitching methods, such as reinforced seams and double
stitching, manufacturers can ensure that garments withstand the
rigors of daily use without unraveling or falling apart. Similarly,
using high-quality threads that are resistant to abrasion and
breakage can further enhance the longevity of garments, reducing
the need for repairs or replacements.
Improving Performance: Proper utilization of resources in the
garment sewing section is essential for improving the overall
performance of the apparel industry. This includes optimizing
production processes to minimize waste, maximize efficiency, and
reduce production costs. By streamlining workflows, minimizing
downtime, and implementing lean manufacturing principles,
manufacturers can improve productivity and profitability while
maintaining high-quality standards.
Reducing Production Costs: Efficient resource utilization in
garment sewing can lead to significant cost savings for
manufacturers. By minimizing material waste, reducing labor costs,
and optimizing production schedules, manufacturers can lower the
overall cost of production, making their products more
competitive in the market. Additionally, investing in automated
sewing technologies and equipment can further reduce labor costs
and increase production efficiency, leading to greater cost savings
over time.
Minimizing Wastage: Waste reduction is a critical aspect of
sustainable manufacturing practices in the apparel industry. By
minimizing wastage in the garment sewing section, manufacturers
can reduce their environmental footprint and contribute to a more
sustainable supply chain. This includes reducing fabric scraps,
optimizing pattern layouts, and recycling or repurposing leftover
materials whenever possible. By adopting circular economy
principles and minimizing waste throughout the production
process, manufacturers can create more environmentally friendly
and socially responsible products.
The buyer’s decision is also determined by his personal
characteristics. These include the particular buyer’s age, gender,
stage in the life cycle i.e. childhood, youth stage and old age, his
occupation, financial background, lifestyle.
Improving the utilization of man, machine, material, and method in
the production process can lead to higher production rates and
improved quality outcomes in the apparel industry. Additionally,
adopting proper quality tools allows manufacturers to assess the
current status of their processes and products, enabling them to
identify areas for improvement and achieve better quality
standards.
There maybe a gap between what consumers desire and what
designers think they desire in terms quality. In order to improve
clothing quality, besides developing physical features, there is a
need to understand what kinds of cues indicate quality to
consumers.
Consumer Desires vs. Designer Perceptions:
Consumers may prioritize different aspects of quality than
designers do. While designers may focus on technical aspects such
as fabric composition, construction techniques, and durability,
consumers may place more emphasis on subjective factors such as
comfort, fit, and aesthetic appeal.
Designers may also have their own aesthetic preferences and
design philosophies that may not always align with consumer
preferences. This can lead to discrepancies between the quality
standards set by designers and the quality expectations of
consumers.(15)
Understanding Consumer Cues for Quality:
To improve clothing quality, it's essential to understand what cues
indicate quality to consumers. These cues may vary depending on
factors such as demographics, cultural background, and personal
preferences.
Some common cues that consumers associate with quality include:
Fabric Quality: Consumers often perceive higher-quality fabrics as
softer, smoother, and more luxurious. Fabrics that feel
comfortable against the skin and have a substantial weight are
often associated with higher quality.
Construction and Workmanship: Consumers look for signs of
meticulous craftsmanship, such as even stitching, durable seams,
and attention to detail in finishing techniques like hemming and
binding.
Fit and Silhouette: Well-fitted garments that flatter the body and
maintain their shape over time are seen as indicators of quality.
Consumers appreciate garments that are tailored to their body
type and offer a flattering silhouette.
Brand Reputation: Consumers may associate quality with well-
known brands or labels that have a reputation for producing high-
quality clothing. Brand reputation can serve as a cue for
consumers to infer the quality of a garment.
Price: While price alone is not always indicative of quality,
consumers often perceive higher-priced items as being of higher
quality. However, consumers also expect value for money, so
garments that are perceived as overpriced may be seen as lower
quality.
Improving Clothing Quality:
Besides developing physical features such as fabric quality and
construction techniques, designers and manufacturers can
improve clothing quality by:
Conducting market research to understand consumer preferences
and perceptions regarding quality.
Incorporating consumer feedback into the design and production
process to address specific quality concerns and preferences.
Communicating the quality attributes of garments effectively
through labeling, marketing, and product descriptions.
Offering transparency about the materials and production
methods used in garment manufacturing to build trust with
consumers.
Providing opportunities for consumers to interact with and
experience the quality of garments firsthand, such as through in-
store displays, product samples, and online reviews.
There ia need for new pattern making technique and gain a deeper
understanding of body shape and size across different ages and
ethnicities reflects the need for innovation and inclusivity in the
fashion industry. By adopting new approaches to pattern making
and enhancing our understanding of diverse body types, designers
can create garments that fit better and appeal to a broader range
of customers.
New Pattern-Making Methods:
Traditional pattern-making methods may not always accommodate
the diversity of body shapes and sizes present in the population.
Therefore, there is a need for innovative approaches to pattern
making that take into account the nuances of individual bodies.
Advanced technologies such as 3D body scanning and computer-
aided design (CAD) offer opportunities to create more accurate
and customizable patterns. These tools allow designers to capture
precise body measurements and translate them into digital
patterns that can be adjusted to fit different body types more
effectively.
Developing new pattern-making methods also involves exploring
alternative construction techniques and garment designs that can
accommodate variations in body shape and size without
compromising style or comfort.
Understanding Body Shape and Size:(13)
A deeper understanding of body shape and size across different
ages and ethnicities is essential for developing patterns that cater
to a diverse customer base. This requires research and data
collection to identify common body characteristics and variations
within different demographic groups.
By studying factors such as body proportions, distribution of
weight, and variations in skeletal structure, designers can
develop patterns that are more inclusive and accommodating of
diverse body types.
It's also important to consider cultural preferences and
aesthetic ideals related to body shape and size. By
understanding the specific needs and preferences of different
ethnic groups, designers can create garments that resonate with
a broader range of customers.
Optimizing Pattern Development:
Developing an optimum pattern involves minimizing the need for
extensive modifications and alterations during the fitting
process. This can be achieved by incorporating standard fit
models that represent a diverse range of body types and sizes,
allowing designers to create patterns that are more universally
flattering.
Additionally, leveraging data analytics and machine learning
algorithms can help identify patterns and trends in body
measurements, allowing designers to anticipate common fit
issues and proactively address them in the pattern development
stage.
Satisfying the Majority of Customers:
While it may not be possible to create patterns that satisfy every
individual's preferences and requirements, the goal is to develop
patterns that cater to the majority of customers. This involves
striking a balance between accommodating variations in body
shape and size while maintaining consistency and coherence in
garment design.
By focusing on fit, comfort, and functionality, designers can
create garments that appeal to a broad spectrum of customers,
regardless of age, ethnicity, or body type.(20)
Conclusion
Customers have a big impact on products at every point of their lives,
including purchase, usage, and disposal. Customers choose when to
discard clothing, but even before that, their choices at the time of
purchase so there should be a customer survey which will be aligned
to manufacturing processes.
There should be a proper research on how to bring jacket and trouser
popular among women with the help of designs, fit and comfort.
The importance of a well-fitted blazer jacket cannot be overstated.
Unlike other garments where a loose or oversized fit might be
acceptable or even fashionable
There should also be a durable stitching method and line balancing to
increase the durability of garment.
Improving the utilization of man, machine, material, and method in the
production process can lead to higher production rates and improved
quality outcomes in the apparel industry
