Answers:
1. Lexi is driving home from her holiday house. It took her 2 hours to drive home,
travelling at 90km/hr. How far away was her holiday in kilometres?
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝐹𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎 𝑡𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟: 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
We can rearrange this formula to find distance:
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 × 𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
Therefore, in order to find the distance, we must multiply 2 hours by 90km/hr.
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 2 × 90
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒 = 180𝑘𝑚
Therefore, her holiday house is 180km away.

2. If $1 in Australian currency is worth 30 Japanese Yen, how many Australian dollars

could I exchange for 390 Japanese Yen?
If 1 Australian dollar is worth 30 Japanese Yen, in order to find out how many Australian
dollars (AUD) 390 Yen is worth, we need to divide it by 30.
1 𝐴𝑈𝐷 = 30 𝑌𝑒𝑛
Therefore:
390 𝑌𝑒𝑛
𝐴𝑈𝐷 = = $130
30
Therefore, you could get $130.

3. Raj’s family spends $190 on electricity a month and their electricity provider charges 10
cents per kilowatt hour. How many kilowatts hours of electricity do they use a month?
First, we need to convert $190 into cents as the conversion rate the question gives us is in
cents.
$190 = 19,000 𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠
Then, to find out how many kilowatt hours Raj’s family uses we must divide this amount by
how much one kilowatt hour costs – 10 cents.
19000
𝑅𝑎𝑗 ′ 𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑦 𝑢𝑠𝑒 = 𝑘𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑡 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
10
𝑅𝑎𝑗 ′ 𝑠 𝑓𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑦 𝑢𝑠𝑒 = 1900 𝑘𝑖𝑙𝑜𝑤𝑎𝑡𝑡 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
Therefore, Raj’s family uses 1900 kilowatt hours.

4. If Jane drives 200km in 2 hours, what is her average speed in km/hr?

𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝐹𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎 𝑡𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟: 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
Therefore, in order to find her speed, we need to divide 200 km by 2 hours:
200 𝑘𝑚
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 = = 100𝑘𝑚/ℎ𝑟
2 ℎ𝑟𝑠
Therefore, her average speed was 100km/hr.

5. Fiona travels to school by bus and train. In the morning she walks to the bus stop that is
1 km from her house. She then catches a bus for 20 minutes to get to the train station
and catches a train to school for 15 minutes. If it takes her 30 minutes to walk 2 km,
what is the latest time she can leave home to get to school by 8:30am?
First, we need to find out the total time she travels on bus and train:
𝐵𝑢𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛 = 20 + 15
𝐵𝑢𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛 = 35 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠
Therefore, in order to be at school by 8:30, she must catch the bus 35 minutes before 8:30am.
8: 30 − 35 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠 = 7: 55𝑎𝑚
Then we need to find how long it takes her to walk to the bus stop from her house. If it takes
her 30 minutes to walk 2 km then it must take her 15 minutes to walk 1 km.
If it takes her 15 minutes to get to the bus stop she should leave 15 before she needs to catch
the bus at 7:55am.
7: 55𝑎𝑚 − 15 𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑢𝑡𝑒𝑠 = 7: 40𝑎𝑚
Therefore, she must leave home by 7:40am to arrive at school by 8:30am.

6. Johnson pays $570 USD to fly from New York to Paris and pays €100* a night for 3
nights for accommodation. How much money does he spend altogether in USD, if 1USD
is worth €0.8?
First, we calculate how many euros he spent in total for the accommodation:
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑒𝑢𝑟𝑜𝑠 = 100 × 3
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑒𝑢𝑟𝑜𝑠 = €300
Then we need to calculate how many euros his flight to Paris cost. If 1 USD is worth €0.8 then
$570𝑈𝑆𝐷 = 570 × 0.8 𝑒𝑢𝑟𝑜𝑠 = €456
Therefore, in total he is spending €456 + €300 = €756.
Therefore, the answer is €756.

7. The price of tickets for a water park depends on age and are listed below:

Children under 16……………………………$12

Adults……………………………………………..$20
Family of 4* (SPECIAL DEAL)…………..$55
*2 adults and 2 children

If the water park made $1770 on Sunday and they sold 45 child tickets and 34 adult
tickets, how many families of 4 went to the water park on Sunday and bought the
special deal?
First, we need to calculate how much the water park made from the child and adult tickets.
𝐶ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐴𝑑𝑢𝑙𝑡 = $12 × 45 + $20 × 34 = $1220
Then we can calculate how much money was made from the family tickets by taking away
$1220 from the total the water park made:
𝐹𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑦 𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑡𝑠 = $1770 − $1220 = $550
We then need to calculate how many family tickets were sold by dividing this total by the price
of the ticket:
550
𝑁𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝑓𝑎𝑚𝑖𝑙𝑦 𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑒𝑡𝑠 = = 10
55
Therefore 10 family tickets were sold.

8. Jeff is tiling a room with the following dimensions. How much money will it cost him to
tile the room if the tiles he wants to use cost $30 per square meter?

5m
6m

2m

5m
NOT TO SCALE
In order to do this question, we can first calculate the total square metres he will need to tile,
using the diagram. This can be done by splitting the shape into two rectangles:

5m
6m

2m

5m

Therefore, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 6 × 5 + 2 × 5 = 40𝑚2

𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑡 = 40 × 30 = $120
Therefore, the total cost is $120.

9. A veggie shop sells carrots for $4/kg. How much money would it cost to buy 2.5kg of
carrots?
The total price is the price per kilogram multiplied by the number of 2.5kgs. Therefore the total
price would be:
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑝𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑒 = $4 × 2.5𝑘𝑔 = $10
Therefore, it would cost $10.

10. Kali runs 3km every day for 21 days at an average speed of 12km/hr. How many hours
has she run in total in the past 21 days?
First, we need to calculate how many hours she runs every day.
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝐹𝑜𝑟𝑚𝑢𝑙𝑎 𝑡𝑜 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟: 𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
We can rearrange this formula to calculate time:
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 =
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑
Therefore, in order to find the time, we must divide 3km by 12km/hr:
3𝑘𝑚
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 = = 0.25ℎ𝑟𝑠
12𝑘𝑚/ℎ𝑟
Next, to find out how much she ran over the 21 days we multiply this time by 21.
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 (𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙) = 21 × 0.25 = 5.25 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
Therefore, the total time she ran was 5.25 hours.
