Internship-Problem statement-1
 Structural shed is fully cladded structure, located at Katupalli port.
 The dimensions -L, W & H are provided in the attached sketch.
 Consider the dead and live loads as per IS 875 part-1
 5 MT capacity crane is supported on steel bracket connected to column.
The crane loads are provide in the attached sketch.
 Column base to be considered Fixed
 350 grade steel for all members
 Primary loads to be applied as UDL on truss
 Longitudinal Bracings on end bays & Rafter bays braced accordingly,
 Internal pressure coefficient to be considered as per IS 875
 Wind load corresponding to KATUPALLI region
 Design side runner & Purlins – Use Channel sections
 Foundation bolts shall be 8.8 grade.
 Design base plate & foundation bolts
 Ignore the following- staircase enclosure, office space, toilets, insulation
for sheeting ( side & Roof), Turbo ventilator in roof.

Superstructure deliverables
 Estimate the total structural steel quantity for this shed.

Sensitivity: LNT Construction Internal Use

- The final summary shall comprise the weights of – Column, Truss, bracings,
beams, baseplates, side runner/purlins and connections.
 Base plate and foundation bolt details
 Auto cad drawing showing the General arrangement for the
foundations.

1 Prepare sketches showing structural arrangement of Columns & vertical

bracings
2 Prepare Sketch of Truss arrangement, rafter bracings & tie level bracings
3 Primary load cases -
1) Dead loads
2) Live loads
3) Crane loads
4) Wind load in X direction ( Pressure, suction )
5) Wind load in Z direction ( Pressure, suction )
4 Wind load calculation
 Basic wind speed, K1, K2, K3 K4
 Design wind speed
 Wind pressure
 Design wind pressure
5 Load combinations
1) Strength
2) Serviceability
6 Provide tentative members sizes for various structural components
7 Prepare sketches showing the individual load cases
8 Decide on the Slenderness ratio limits for the structural members
180 / 250
9 Create the geometry of the structure in the model & define the following
in Mathematical model:
 Boundary conditions
 Member truss
 Beam releases
10 Apply the primary loads in model
11 Check the model for any in discrepancies
12 Apply the design parameters - UNL , Ly
-
13 Design the purlin & side runners- manually for the critical loads
14 Static loads check – Do manual calculations & ensure correctness
15 Check the deflections & Stress ratios
16 Take the structure weight from Output & Compare with manual
calculations

Foundation design

 Dry density of soil = 18 kN /m3

 Consider plinth beam all round the columns ( if applicable)
 Bottom of the foundation shall be considered as Fixed
 Grade of concrete = M25, Reinforcement = Fe500

Sensitivity: LNT Construction Internal Use

 Consider a grade slab of 150mm thick on the Ground
 Consider 1m high brick wall all round the building

Substructure deliverables
 Estimate the total concrete quantity & Reinforcement steel
required for foundations.

 Provide a detailed BBS for all RCC components.

 Auto cad drawing showing the General arrangement for the

foundations.
