• Intraoperative Care: During surgery, nurses monitor the patient's vital signs, manage medications, and
provide direct patient care. They also act as a communication link between the surgical team and the
patient's family.

• Postoperative Care: Nurses oversee the patient's recovery, manage pain, monitor for complications, and
provide postoperative education and support.4
Effective Communication and Teamwork
Communication Strategies

• Briefings and Debriefings: Conducting preoperative briefings and postoperative debriefings ensures
that all team members are informed about the patient's status, surgical plan, and any potential issues.
This practice enhances preparedness and fosters a culture of open communication.

• Clear and Concise Information Sharing: Using standardized communication tools like SBAR (Situation,
Background, Assessment, Recommendation) helps team members convey critical information quickly and
accurately.

• Nonverbal Communication: Maintaining awareness of nonverbal cues, such as body language and eye
contact, can improve understanding and coordination during surgery.
Teamwork and Collaboration

• Role Clarity: Clearly defining each team member's role and responsibilities prevents overlaps and
ensures that all tasks are covered efficiently. This clarity fosters mutual respect and trust among team
members.

• Mutual Support: Encouraging a culture of mutual support, where team members assist each other as
needed, enhances overall team performance and patient safety. This support includes stepping in to help
with tasks outside one's primary role when necessary.

• Regular Training: Interdisciplinary training sessions and simulations help team members practice
working together, improving their ability to coordinate effectively in real surgical scenarios.
Case Study: Successful Collaboration in a Complex Surgery.
In a major urban hospital, a complex cardiac surgery was scheduled to repair a congenital heart defect in
a 6-year-old patient. This high-risk procedure required the coordinated efforts of an interdisciplinary
team, including an anesthesiologist, anesthesia technician, surgical team led by a cardiothoracic surgeon,
operation technicians, and perioperative nurses. The successful outcome of this surgery highlights the
importance of effective collaboration and communication among these healthcare professionals. 5
Preoperative Phase
Anesthesia Technician's Role: The anesthesia technician, Alex, was responsible for preparing the
anesthesia equipment and ensuring all necessary drugs and monitoring devices were available and
functioning correctly. Alex conducted a thorough equipment check, calibrating monitors and ensuring the
availability of backup systems. Additionally, Alex prepared the anesthesia cart with all required
medications and supplies, ensuring everything was within easy reach for the anesthesiologist.
Operation Technician's Role: Operation technician, Maria, prepared the operating room by setting up
the surgical instruments, ensuring sterility, and organizing the surgical trays. Maria also checked the
functionality of surgical lights and other essential equipment. She coordinated with the central supply
department to ensure all necessary items were present and correctly sterilized.
Perioperative Nurse's Role: Perioperative nurse, Sarah, conducted a comprehensive preoperative
assessment of the patient, reviewing medical history, current medications, and any potential allergies.
Sarah provided the family with information about the procedure, addressing their concerns and ensuring

[Link] 186
informed consent was obtained. She also started the patient's intravenous line and administered
preoperative medications as ordered by the anesthesiologist.
Intraoperative Phase
