Packaging Assignment

Objective:
The purpose of this assignment is to help you analyze and understand the different layers of
packaging for a product you use in your daily life. You will explore the details of the packaging,
compare it with alternatives, and evaluate how packaging choices affect supply chain activities.

Assignment Instructions:

1. Product Selection:
Look around and select a product that you used today or yesterday. Make sure it’s a product
with packaging that you can examine in detail.

2. First Layer Analysis:

Describe all the information about the primary (first) layer of packaging for your selected
product. Include details on:

o Material: What is the packaging made of (e.g., plastic, glass, paper)?

o Color: What colors are used, and how do they contribute to the product’s
appearance?

o Content Information: What details about the product are provided (e.g.,
ingredients, instructions, barcode)?

o Marking and Labeling: What symbols, logos, or certifications are present?

o Size and Volume: Describe the dimensions and capacity of the packaging.

o Typography: Discuss the font styles, sizes, and any other notable features of the
writing on the package.

3. Comparative Analysis:
Use the internet to find the same product packaged differently (alternative primary
packaging). Analyze these alternatives and then write about what changes you would make
to improve the packaging of your selected product. Consider factors such as functionality,
aesthetics, sustainability, and cost.

4. Impact on Supply Chain Activities:

Explain how the changes you suggested might impact supply chain activities, such as:

o Purchasing: Would the new packaging materials or design affect procurement

costs?

o Transportation: How would the changes affect transportation efficiency or costs?

o Handling: Would the new design make the product easier or more challenging to
handle?

o Warehousing: How would the packaging changes impact storage space and
requirements?
o Merchandising: How might the new packaging affect the product's shelf presence
or attractiveness to consumers?

5. Secondary and Tertiary Packaging:

Select appropriate secondary and tertiary packaging for your product. Describe these layers
in detail and explain why you chose them, considering factors such as protection, branding,
ease of transport, and environmental impact.

6. Information Requirements for Secondary and Tertiary Layers:

List the information that should be included on the secondary and tertiary packaging layers.
Consider aspects such as product identification, handling instructions, barcodes, shipping
information, and any regulatory markings.

Submission Requirements:

• Word Count: 500 to 800 words

• Include at least two references from credible sources.

• Ensure your work is organized, with clear headings and subheadings.

Deadline: [October 4th,2024]
