CHAPTER 1 – Introduction
Background/Overview
This research investigates the Impact of Instagram User-Generated Content (UGC) on
purchase decisions in the UK Fashion Retail Industry. Currently, the retail sector is
experiencing a significant transformation driven by social media platforms, among which
Instagram stands out due to its visually engaging content. This study specifically focuses
on UGC—a key driver of consumer behaviour on Instagram—and its significant influence
on purchasing decisions. It is noteworthy that 92% of consumers trust recommendations
from friends and family more than all other forms of advertising, and 84% of Gen Z
consumers tend to trust brands that feature real customers in their ads (Nogueira, 2023).
Research Rationale
This research delves into the critical question of how Instagram UGC influences
consumer purchase decisions within the UK fashion retail industry. Examining various
UGC types and their impact on consumer behaviour aims to provide valuable insights for
fashion retailers and marketers. Understanding which forms of UGC resonate most with
consumers and how engagement metrics play a role in purchase decisions will be crucial
for developing effective social media strategies.
Research Aim
Assessing the impact of Instagram User-Generated Content (UGC) influences consumer
purchase decisions in the UK fashion retail industry.
Research Objectives
Objective 1:
To analyse which categories of user-generated content on Instagram have the biggest
influence on consumers' decisions to buy clothing in the UK retail sector.
Objective 2:
To compare the relationship between engagement metrics and the influence of UGC on
consumer purchasing behaviour.
Objective 3:
To evaluate the consumer perceptions of Instagram UGC and its trustworthiness in
influencing their purchasing decisions within the UK fashion retail context.
Research Questions
1. How does Instagram User-Generated Content influence consumer purchase
decisions in the UK fashion retail industry?
2. Which types UGC on Instagram (e.g., reviews, influencer posts, customer photos)
are most effective in influencing purchase decisions?
3. What role do engagement metrics (likes, comments, shares) play in signalling the
influence of UGC on consumer purchase behaviour?
Research structure
This report begins with an Introduction that outlines the research aims and objectives,
setting the stage for the study. The Literature Review explores existing research on UGC
and its impact on consumer behaviour in the fashion industry. The Methodology section
details the strategies, data gathering methods, and frameworks used to collect data from
three UK fashion retail brands. The Data Analysis section examines and interprets the
gathered data. Finally, the Conclusion and Recommendations summarize key findings,
discuss the implications, and propose directions for future research and practical
strategies.
Limitations
This study faces significant limitations due to restricted access to proprietary data from
fashion brands and Instagram, which hinders a comprehensive analysis of how UGC
impacts consumer purchasing decisions. The frequently changing algorithms of
Instagram also affect the visibility and effectiveness of UGC, adding complexity to our
understanding (Faster Capital, 2024). These challenges necessitate a cautious approach
to interpreting results and underscore the importance of future research collaborations
to access more in-depth insights.
Conclusion
This chapter lays the groundwork for research. Examining various UGC types and their
impact on consumer behaviour holds promise for informing effective social-media
strategies. However, limitations due to data access and dynamic algorithms necessitate
a measured approach and pave the way for future research partnerships to gain a deeper
understanding.
