III. Procedure
Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Checking of the
a. Cleanliness of the room
“Good morning, class!” “Good morning, Sir!”
“Before anything else, kindly sit in your respective
places and check if there are pieces of paper under your
chair, pick them up, and arrange your chairs properly.”
“Let’s maintain the order and cleanliness of our
classroom.”
b. Proper uniform
c. Attendance
“Is there any absent today?” “No sir.”
“Good glad to know there are no absent.”
2. Prayer
“Before we proceed to our lesson, let’s bow our heads The students will bow their head.
and feel the presence of the Lord.”
(The student will stand in front of the class
“May I request (student’s name) to lead the prayer.” and lead the prayer)
“Okay, you may take your seats.”

“In our previous lesson, you’ve learned the different
techniques to separate the components of mixture. So,
can you recall what are the different techniques we use (Some student raises their hands)
to separate mixtures? “Sir, scooping, filtration and decantation”
“Yes, very good we have scooping we use taho as an
example, then filtration like the tea bag and decantation
commonly used in storing wine or alcoholic beverages,
what else?”
(Some student raises their hands)
“Yes, very good we have distillation that’s why we
“Sir, distillation and crystallization.”
have distilled waters and crystallization technique
where we boil the water to evaporate and get the
crystal-like substance.”
“Very good class!”
4. Motivation
“Now class have you ever notice changes on your
bodies class as you go through puberty?”
“Did you know by that you have experience physical “I think so sir”
and chemical changes in your body?
“For boys physical changes refers to your height,
growth and body physique while for girls you
experience widening of your hips and also growth”
“Then for chemical changes, especially girls your
hormones will produce more estrogen which is a
feminine chemical component while for boys is
testosterone making your voice deep is the work of
testosterone.”
B. Lesson Proper
“So today we are going to talk about properties of
matter.”
“Did you know that we are surrounded by matter?”
“That’s right, everything that surrounds you is made up (Some student raises their hands)
of matter.”
“Sir those are sense of smell, hear, touch, feel
“Do you know what kind of matter is with you today?” and taste.”
“Do you know what property of that matter makes it
different and unique from other materials?”
“You are also a matter that is why it is also important
for you to know the different properties of matter.”
“Matter has properties, in property tells something
about matter that you can observe using your five

senses.”
“So can anyone tell me what are these five senses?”
“Yes, very good you are right.”
“Yes, Sir!”
“So, by knowing those properties, we can differentiate “Gray!”
solid, liquid and gas.”
“Rectangle!”
“This matter can be classified into physical property
and chemical property.” “It looks kind of big sir!”
“Let’s start with physical properties of matter.” “Hard!”
“Physical properties can be observed using our five
senses or can be measured without changing its
composition. So, for examples we have this rock.”
“Can you identify the physical property of this rock
using your five senses.”
“Let’s try, what is the color of this rock?
“That’s right.”
“What is the shape of this rock?”
“What is the size of this rock?”
“And what is the texture of this rock?”
“Very good”
“So, color, shape, texture and size are considered
physical properties of matter as they can be observed
using our five senses.”
“Color refers to the lightness, darkness, hue and
saturation of an object.”
“Shape describes the outline of an object.”
“Size describe how big or small an object is and texture
describes the roughness or smoothness of an object.”
(Students in confusion)
“Physical properties of matter can be further classified
into two: we have extensive property of matter and
intensive property of matter.
“Extensive properties of matter are physical properties
of matter that depends on the amount of matter of an
object. This includes mass, weight, length, density and
height.”
“By measuring extensive properties of matter, we use

measuring tools, so if we want to measure the mass of
an object, we use a weighing scale.”
“By the way do you know the difference of mass and
weight?”
“What would change when you go to the moon, is it
your mass or your weight?”
“Mass is the amount of matter in an object it is express
in grams or in kilograms and mass is constant, while
weight is the pull of gravity and it is express in
Newton.”
“So, when you go to the moon your mass won’t change
your weight does. So, when we talk about kilograms or
5 newton this are considered physical properties of
matter particularly as extensive properties of matter.”
“Volume is also considered as extensive property of
matter as volume is the amount of space an object
occupies it is express in unit of cubic centimeter or
cubic meter.”
“Another is height it describes tall an object is, length
how long or short an object is.”
“So, this are all extensive properties of matter because
they depend on the amount of matter present in an
object.”
“Intensive property is a characteristic of matter that
does not depend on the amount of the substance.
Intensive property includes color, density, boiling point
and melting point.”
“Let’s take water as an example, we have a bucket that
contains 10 kg water and the other we will add 5 more
kg so that makes it 15 kg of water. The color of the
water is blue, so in terms of density they both have the
same density even if the one bucket has 10 kg and the
other has 15 kg of water and so the boiling point of the
10 kg water is the same as the 15 kg of water. In other
words, intensive properties are those properties that do
not change even if the amount of the substance is small
or large.”
“In terms of extensive property, so the other mass of the
water changes or adds up so it’s mass and volume
become larger.”
“For a chemical property a change in the substances
chemical structure is observed.”

“This includes the heat of combustion which is the
energy released on a compound undergoes burning
oxygen and flammability which refers to whether a
compound will burn when exposed to a flame.”
“A substance can also undergo physical or chemical
change for example ice when the ice is exposed in the
room temperature it will become liquid but when you
put it again in the freezer it will go back as ice. This is
an example of physical change; in simple terms it is just
a change in physical state it can go back to original (Students raise their hand)
state.”
“Sir, properties are classified into physical

wood turns into ashes but you cannot turn ashes into
wood this is an example of chemical change, in simple (Students raise their hand)
terms there is a change in atomic structure and cannot

intensive property!”
3. Generalization
“So, properties of matter are classified into?”
“Yes, very good.”
“Then physical properties are classified into two
category and what are those categories?”
“Yes, very good class.”
“It looks like you all learned our lesson for today, so in
order to test your gained knowledge let us have an
activity.”

Identify each of the following as a physical property or a chemical property. If it is a physical property, indicate
whether it is an intensive or extensive property.
Physical Property Chemical Property Intensive or
Extensive
1. Paper turns into as after burning.
2. A ripe mango is yellow.
3. Butter melts when left on the table.
4. Perfume when exposed to an ignited lighter,
can cause fire.
5. Talc is the softest known mineral.
6. Copper can be easily bent and turned into
wires.
7. Coals are burned in cooking barbecue.
8. Gold is heavier than lead.
9. Five grams of sugar is added to water.
10. Vinegar can cause corrosion to metal.
