-How did you introduce yourself to your patient?
First, I greeted the patient. Then I introduced myself to the patient by telling her my
name and that I am a second stage student in Hawler Medical University, and would like
to ask her some questions regarding her visit to the hospital.
-Did you take permission to begin the interview?
Yes, of course.
-How did you establish the initial rapport with your patient?
I asked her how long has she been waiting to see the doctor, and about some test
results that she had brought with her. Finally I asked about her reason to visit the
hospital this morning.
-What was the list of patient’s problems?
She said that she has Hypertension, Diabetes type 2, and she also has excess fat in her
body. She also mentioned that she has severe urinary tract infection.
-How did you negotiate agenda with your patient and determine to begin with main
compliment?
I asked about her main concern, and she opened up by telling me how she was
diagnosed with those problems.
-What was the patient’s perspective?
She only came to the hospital for the purpose of checking her blood pressure and sugar,
but she seemed afraid so I asked her for the reason. She told me that she wasn’t the
first person in the family to be diagnosed with diabetes and hypertension and
unfortunately most of them died in early ages.
-Did the patient express any emotions?
Yes, she was upset and afraid that she is going through all this pain.
-What emotion seeking questions did you use?
I asked about her family and her husband’s situation. Furthermore, asking about where
she lives and how many children does she have.
-What responds did you use to respond to patient’s emotions?
I told her how sorry I am for her situation, and I understand that her situation is
affecting her daily life and that she should be hopeful.
-What was the diagnosis?
Diabetes and Hypertension
-What information did you give to you patient?
I told her that she should be careful in what she eats and to avoid salty foods as well as
sweets.
-What did you do to let your patient to understand your information?
I spoke in Arabic with her since she wasn’t good in Kurdish , used as simple words as
possible, repeated and summarized the information.
-Did you ask the patient about their feedback on your performance?
Yes, she said in the beginning I was talking nervously, but later I became much more
relaxed.
