Introduction

The following paper describes my proposal for the interjection of diversity equity and

inclusion into my future role as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP).

Furthermore, it will discuss how I will integrate education on the care of the LGBTQIA+ clients,

how one can adhere to these guidelines daily, and about creating a vision statement for the

practice. The intent is to raise awareness of how these aspects will contribute to the professional

experience. In essence, this means that commitment to perpetual learning shall facilitate the

delivery of adequate mental health to culturally diverse patients.

Professional Background

I began my nursing career in 2015 as an LPN. Starting in this role gave me a strong

foundation in patient care. For example, I often assisted elderly patients in long-term care

facilities. This experience taught me patience and compassion. I advanced my education by

earning an associate degree in 2021. This helped me to take on more responsibilities. I moved

into psychiatric home care, where I learned to handle challenging mental health situations. An

example is when I supported a patient through a difficult period of anxiety. Last year, I

completed my bachelor’s degree, which opened more doors for me. Currently, I work in home

health, where I manage patient care in their homes. This role has enhanced my understanding of

healthcare operations. For instance, coordinating with doctors and family members is now part of

my routine. My eight years in nursing have given me diverse experiences. Each step has

prepared me for my next goal. I am now pursuing a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

(PMHNP) certification to further my career in mental health.

Education History

I received my high school education in Nigeria to provide me with the necessary

background to undertake my further education. I took my high school studies and got admitted to

a college of nursing in Nigeria which took me three years to complete; my basic education in

nursing made me understand things like how to attend to patients, basic surgery, and other basic

things that are exercised in a hospital. Later on, as a resident of the United States, I sought to

advance my learning and became a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 2015. Through this

certification, I opened a chance for me to practice in the health field, and to start with I got a job

in a long term job where I was attending mostly elderly patients. It enlightened me patience and

empathy: an example, I make able a old man to walk again after being trodden down by a stroke.

As much as I was eager to learn, I pursued my education and obtained my associate degree in

nursing in the year 2021, which has helped me to gain more professional understanding of

various concepts in nursing including more enhanced patient care procedures. For the past year, I

worked as a happening in home health where a nurse attends to clients in their homes and liaises

with physicians and families regarding the care plan. For instance, I worked with a group of

students to develop a care plan for a patient with some health issues including Diabetes,

Tuberculosis, and Asthma. During my 8 years of nursing career, I have worked across different

spectrums of the profession, as a psychiatric home care nurse which involved attending to a

young woman suffering from anxiety related disorders.

Personal and Professional Goals

My aim to attain a graduate degree and to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse

Practitioner (PMHNP) emanates from my nursing background and personal experience. It has

been my long-term passion to help people, as it makes me more fulfilled. This passion became
4

more pointed as I progressed through a variety of nursing specialties. For instance, when I had

the chance to work in psychiatric home care, I begin to discovered that there is something like

mental health. It was also evident that mental health, diseases do not just interfere with lives, but

I got a chance to witness it firsthand. I wish to focus on the care need individuals in that status.

Also self-fulfillment is a major concern, and this involves the desire to grow in my career Higher

levels I have accomplished some achievements for instance attaining a bachelor’s degree. At the

moment, I plan on the courses that will help me to develop my knowledge more thoroughly. This

is true because when I become a PMHNP I am awarded with expertise in both the heart and

head. This role will permit me to have a positive impact on the organization and to help it

develop.

Goals for Attaining Competencies in this Graduate Nurse Practitioner Program

One of my main goals in this program is to deepen my understanding of psychiatric disorders. I

want to learn more about conditions like depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. For instance,

understanding the latest treatments will help me provide better care. Another goal is to develop

strong assessment skills. Being able to accurately assess patients is crucial in mental health. I aim

to learn various assessment tools and techniques. This will help me identify issues early and

create effective treatment plans. For example, using standardized assessment tools can improve

diagnosis accuracy. Lastly, I want to improve my therapeutic communication skills. Effective

communication is vital in building trust with patients. I plan to practice and refine my skills

through coursework and practical experiences. This will help me connect with patients and

understand their needs better. By achieving these goals, I will be well-prepared to provide high-

quality care as a PMHNP.

Goals for Your Professional Practice

One of my career objectives is to become a nurse practitioner, licensed by the state and board

certified. This kind of environment will enable me to support patients struggling with serious

mental illnesses. I anticipate to accomplish this because, during my training, I will be able to

accumulate the necessary experience together with enhancing my network. For example, one can

be employed as a result of networking with working professionals in the field. Another is to

promote mental health not only as a cause but also as an instructional one. My goal is to inform

patients and their families and friend about mental health. A change in their lifestyle can be

brought about through offering them the support and tools they need for a better way of life. I

intend to achieve this especially through community service programs and demonstrations.

Finally, I would like to learn as a profession develops commitment and professionalism

through professional development. Indeed, one has to understand that the area focused on mental

health care is not stagnant at all. Here I am going to discuss about my proposed plan how will I

update myself I will attend conference I will take some extra courses and I will continue learning

about the latest researches. This will assure that am on a vantage to offering the best treatment

for my patients. By establishing the goals and striving towards its achievement, then it will be

possible to make a significant difference as a PMHNP.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into Future Practice

I plan to integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion into my future practice by treating each

patient with respect and understanding. First, I will educate myself about different cultures and

backgrounds. This knowledge will help me provide better care. For example, understanding

cultural beliefs about mental health can improve patient communication. Second, I will listen to

my patients without judgment. Everyone’s experiences and perspectives are unique. By listening,
6

I can understand their needs better. Third, I will advocate for equal access to care. Not everyone

has the same opportunities for health services. I will work to ensure that all patients receive the

care they need, regardless of their background. For instance, I will help patients find resources if

they face financial barriers. Additionally, I will create a welcoming environment in my practice.

Patients should feel safe and valued. I will also seek feedback from patients to improve my

practice continually. By focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion, I can provide

compassionate and effective care to all my patients.

Education on LGBTQIA+ Care

In terms of fulfilling the duty of teaching others about LGBTQIA+ care, I will approach

the issue as such and be prepared. First, I will conduct research on LGTBQIA+ people’s

particular health requirements. This encompasses knowledge such as gender dysphoria and the

effect of stigma on the health of citizens. For instance, I will undertake conferences focusing on

the options for healthcare for the LGBTQIA+ patient population. Second, I will ensure that I

provide acceptance for the LGBTQIA+ patients I will encounter. This implies treating them with

dignity and referencing their gender and sexuality in the right manner. For example, I will

request and incorporate the patient’s first name and preferred gender pronoun to address the

patient as a sign of respecting patient’s privacy. Third, the promotion of specific resources and

assistance to hopefully embrace all LGBTQIA+ patients. It might include referring them to other

individuals, groups or other professionals who may in some ways appreciate their condition.

Furthermore, I will promote the rights of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer,

Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals accessing the healthcare facilities. This among

others involves combatting discrimination and advocating for practices to be put in place that

ensure equality in right to be cared for.

7

Principles of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

I will implement several strategies to maintain the principles of diversity. To achieve this,

I will schedule regular training sessions on cultural competence and. Second, I will foster an

inclusive environment where all patients feel welcome and respected. This will be achieved

through using inclusive language that will ensure I am sensitive to individual needs. This will

require that I have my practice’s forms and documents are inclusive, asking for preferred names

and pronouns. Then, I will actively seek feedback from my patients by listening to their

experiences to help identify areas for improvement. These steps will be essential in enabling me

uphold the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion every day.

Vision Statement

In my future as an advanced practice nurse, my passion for change and implementation of

progressive advanced nursing specialties is manifested by my ultimate vision to offer quality

mental health service to everyone. I will therefore ensure that there is a good working

environment good enough to make sure that every patient has the deserved respect. Furthermore,

through advanced education, I aspire to be an expert in mental health and be serving in inpatient

facilities. I will actively promote mental health and fight for mental illness to be looked at as a

disease which affects people just like any other physical illness. This will be made a reality by

the act of ensuring that I am updated in all aspects in order to deliver the best. I also will teach

the future nurses what I have gone through in my journey because I don’t want them to struggle

as I have struggled. Diversity will always be considered within my practice, hence ensuring that

a patient is treated without discrimination based on race. In so doing, I believe I shall be in a

position to maximize my contribution towards enhancing the lives my patients.

8

Conclusion

To sum this up, this paper has described how I shall maintain the core values of diversity,

equity, and inclusion on the practice as a future PMHNP. This included the short-term goal of

monitoring the existing research and literature, continued practice of diverse and relevant

approaches in my everyday work, and the development of a long-term vision of a tolerant

practice. Therefore, making it my personal mission to deliver excellent mental health care and

service to all my patients, I rate the importance of continuous education, diversification, and

advocacy as high. This approach ensures that my practice will not only conform but surpass

clients’ expectations basing on their numerous and unique requirements in accordance with

equity and patient compassion.
