Answer all questions

1. Are Newton’s first and second laws completely independent of each other? Explain. (2)

2. What is the difference between reverberation and echo ? (2)

3. An athlete completes one round of a circular track of radius 100 m in 40 s. What


is his distance, displacement, average speed and average velocity at the end of 2
minutes and 40 seconds ? (2)

4. Whenever there is a change of state due to the supply of heat energy, the temperature
of the substance remains constant for a small amount of time. Where then does this
heat energy get used up ? (2)

5. Kolkata is a very humid region, with peak humudity during summers. Can a desert
cooler efficiently cool the air in a room at such high levels of humidity ? (2)

6. Describe the phenomenon of weightlessness that a person experiences in a lift while


it descends. (2)

7. What are the scientific names for the compounds K2 SO3 and CaCO3 ? (2)

8. A solution contains 30 g of solute A, 20 g of solute B and 50 g of solute C in 220 g of


water. What is the concentration of each solute in terms of mass by mass percentage
of the solution ? (3)

9. What are the charges on each of the atoms in the compounds Al2 (SO4 )3 , CaO and
M gCl2 ? (3)

10. A 5 kg ball is kept on a table which is 1 m in height. If the ball has a total energy
of 60 J, what must be the value of its momentum ? Does the work done by gravity
depend on the path travelled by an object? Why ? (4)

11. A cotton ball of mass 3 g and a volume of 10 cc is immersed in a liquid of density


3.06 g/cc, 40 cm below the surface. Will it float or sink ? In what time will it sink
completely or come to the surface ? (4)
12. Explain the working of a hearing aid. A ship sends ultrasonic sound waves which
travels at a speed of 1480 m/s straight down the sea and reaches it back after 3
seconds. What is the depth of the sea ? (4)

13. What is Tyndall effect ? What type of colloid is rubber ? What is the dispersed
phase and the dispersing medium in rubber ? (4)

14. The average atomic mass of a sample of an element X is 24.5 u. What are the
percentages of the isotopes 24 26
12 X and 12 X in a given sample ? (4)

15. Two wooden blocks of masses 2 kg and 3 kg are connected by an inextensible string.
One of the blocks is pulled with a force of 15 N. What is the acceleration of the
blocks ? Now suppose a frictional force of 2.5 N acts on both the blocks. What will
be the net acceleration of the two blocks in this case? (5)

16. Describe the drawbacks of the Rutherford’s model of the atom and how Bohr’s model
of the atom succeeded in overcoming the objections raised against those drawbacks. (5)
