1. As ecocriticism continues to spread worldwide, the need for comparative and coordinated
study of different bodies of literature and scholarship will increase. This must mean fur-
ther exploration both of (post)colonial non-Western literature and literature of societies
neither Western nor ever colonized by Western powers.
2. Ecocriticism, to date, remains disproportionately nation focused, and disproportionately
concentrated on Anglophone literatures. In the future, more emphasis must be placed
on analysis of affinities across cultures and planetary-scale tendencies as well as against
cultural specificity or uniqueness.
3. Ecocriticism will also need to work (even) harder to distribute attention comprehensively
and proportionately across expressive forms, both within literature—continuing to com-
pensate for its initial overemphasis on “realistic” genres—and in other expressive media,
perhaps especially art, music, and other modes of artistic performance.
4. Just as second-wave sociocentric ecocriticism took issue with the first-wave prioritization
of nature protection, so too in the future ecocriticism will need to remain responsive
to the changing face of environmentalism: to confront more seriously than it has to

date the implications of such recently emergent concerns as climate change issues as
well as unforeseen future crises. Ecocriticism’s increased responsiveness in recent years
to changes inside and outside the discipline is a promising model of how this area may
adapt to rapidly changing environmentalist approaches in years to come.
5. As ecocriticism continues to monitor and selectively assimilate breakthroughs across the
whole range of environmental sciences and social sciences, it must be (even) more as-
sertive than heretofore in pressing the case for the importance of the qualitative thinking

The integration of postcolonial and ethnic minority literatures into literature-environment studies has expanded its scope by incorporating diverse cultural perspectives on nature and environmental justice issues. This cross-pollination helps address the environmental concerns of marginalized communities and highlights how cultural narratives shape interactions with the natural world, thus broadening the field beyond its Anglophone origins .
Gender influences how individuals experience and perceive the environment, with ecocriticism historically exploring patriarchal depictions of women. Recently, focus has shifted to interrogating heteronormativity and human imagination. These dynamics reveal how gender shapes environmental interactions, challenging traditional caregiver or victim roles in favor of more complex narratives, which can alter cultural perceptions and environmental policies .
Deep ecology presents an egalitarian view where all organisms are seen as knots in the biospherical net, emphasizing intrinsic relations over human-centric perspectives. This challenges conventional views on environmental justice by proposing that environmental benefits and hazards should not be distributed based on anthropocentric hierarchies like race or class, but by recognizing the interconnectedness of all life forms .
The debate centers on which diet—omnivorous, vegetarian, locavore—sustains ecological balance. Animal studies scholars highlight direct human-animal interactions, emphasizing ethical considerations and violence. In contrast, ecocritics focus on systemic implications for biodiversity and habitat disruption. This multi-dimensional debate underscores tensions between ethics, health, and environmental impacts, reflecting broader societal dilemmas about sustainable living practices .
Posthumanism attempts to undermine the systematic privileging of humans over other species, proposing a redefinition of this relationship as one of mutual influence. However, it is critiqued for overlooking broader ethical issues; for instance, Haraway focuses on pet animals, ignoring the urgent ethical and environmental issues tied to factory farming . This critique highlights the limitations of a narrow posthumanism focus on everyday human-animal interactions without addressing large-scale industrial impacts.
Initially favoring realism, ecocritics have shifted towards experimental modes due to the complexity and invisibility of ecological phenomena that challenge traditional strategies. This shift opens new narrative possibilities, suggesting that realism may inadequately capture ecological nuances, indicating a need for innovative literary expressions to effectively convey environmental complexities and their impacts .
Native American perspectives often view human-animal relationships as community-based, emphasizing shared traditions and nature, unlike the individualistic focus in posthumanism which explores human-animal fusions.
