Testing for Interference
When a pipeline crosses with another pipeline with a different CP system the
likely hood for Interference exists.
To test for interference you need to have a structure cable for both of the
pipelines
You need to install an interrupter in to your TR o a 4 sec on and 1 sec off
cycle.
Go to the crossing put the reference electrode at the point of the crossing.
Take the on and off potential of your pipe. (for example -1400 on and -950
off.) Now take the potential of the foreign pipe. If no interference is taking
place the potential for on and off will be the same. (for example -1200 on and
-1200 off)
If interference is taking place and the potential recorded is -1200 on and
-1250 off then this is showing a corrosive type of interference and will be
causing corrosion on the FPX. To over come this you will need to use a
resistor and using the two structure cables connect them together set the
resistor so that when your TR turns off the potential doesn’t go more negative.
(for example FPX potential will now be -1210 on and -1200 off) interference
has now been stopped.
The other type of interference is when the FPX shows a potential of -1250 on
and -1200 off. This type of interference is OK and so no action is required.
