Speed, Distance and Time
The relationship between speed, distance, and time is a fundamental
concept in physics and mathematics. It is defined as the ratio of distance
traveled to the time taken to travel that distance. The formula for
calculating speed is:
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
𝑑
𝑆=
𝑡
Here, Speed is measured in units of distance per unit time, such as
meters per second (m/s) or kilometers per hour (km/h). Distance is
measured in units of length, such as meters (m) or kilometers (km), and
Time is measured in units of time, such as seconds (s) or hours (h).
Example:
A car travels a distance of 100 km in 2 hours. What is its speed?
Using the formula
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
we can calculate the speed of the car :
300 𝑘𝑚
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
5 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
= 60 𝑘𝑚/ℎ

Example:
A cyclist travels a distance of 20 km at a speed of 4 km/h. How long does it take to
complete the journey?
Using the formula
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒
𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 =
𝑆𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑
20 𝑘𝑚
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 = = 5 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠
4 𝑘𝑚
Conversion of meters per second (m/s) to kilometers
per hour (km/h):
To convert meters per second (m/s) to kilometers per hour (km/h), we can use the
following formula:
𝑘𝑚ℎ−1 = 𝑚𝑠 −1 × 3.6
For example
If you have a speed of 10 m/s, you can convert it to km/h as follows:
𝑘𝑚ℎ−1 = 10 𝑚𝑠 −1 × 3.6
= 36 𝑘𝑚ℎ−1
To convert kilometers per hour (km/h) to meters per second (m/s)
𝑘𝑚/ℎ
𝑚/𝑠 =
3.6
For example, if you have a speed of 60 km/h, you can convert it to m/s
