GRADE 9 BIOLOGY No:

PERFORMANCE TASK Class:

Classification of Living Things

“Exploring Biodiversity: A Classification Journey”

Task Instructions:

1. Choose a Habitat:
Select an ecosystem (forest, desert, ocean, pond, etc.) and identify 5 different
living organisms from that habitat.
2. Research and Classify:
o Determine the scientific classification (domain, kingdom, phylum, class,
order, family, genus, species) of each organism using the three-domain
system.
o Explain why these organisms are classified under each category.
3. Create a Poster or Digital Presentation:
o Include clear visuals of the 5 organisms (drawings or photos).
o Show their scientific classification in a table/chart format.
o Write a short paragraph for each organism describing its characteristics
and why it belongs to its specific classification group.
4. Reflection (Short Essay):
Write a half-page reflection addressing the following:
o Why is classifying organisms important for understanding biodiversity?
o How does the classification system help scientists communicate and
organize knowledge about living things?

Submission Format:

 Poster (on A3-sized paper) OR Digital Presentation (PowerPoint/Google

Slides/Canva).
 A4 size will not be accepted, it must be in poster or cardboard size.
 Include visuals, organized charts, and reflections.

The three-domain system categorizes living organisms into Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya, based on differences in their genetic makeup and cellular organization. This system benefits biological classification by recognizing key evolutionary relationships and genetic distinctions that traditional systems overlook. It reflects a more accurate evolutionary history and helps scientists identify gene functions and evolutionary changes across broad groups, thus improving the precision of biodiversity studies .

Including reflections in biology performance tasks deepens a student's understanding by encouraging meta-cognition, wherein students critically assess their learning process and knowledge acquisition. Reflecting on the importance of classification and its impact on understanding biodiversity prompts students to contemplate the broader implications of their studies, such as ecological balance and conservation. This self-assessment fosters deeper engagement with the content and reinforces the practical relevance of classification systems .

Classifying organisms contributes to our understanding of biodiversity by providing a systematic way to identify, name, and categorize the immense variety of living organisms on Earth. This structured classification helps scientists to organize biological information and make sense of the diversity in ecosystems, facilitating research, conservation, and education efforts. It also highlights evolutionary relationships and ecological niches, promoting a deeper understanding of how different life forms interact within their environments .

Classifying organisms from diverse habitats presents challenges such as incomplete or ambiguous data, morphological similarities that mask evolutionary differences, and environmental adaptability that complicates classification. These challenges can be overcome by integrating molecular methods such as DNA sequencing with traditional morphological classification. Additionally, fostering international collaboration and data sharing, coupled with advanced technologies like AI for pattern recognition, can enhance accuracy and resolution in classifying biodiversity .

The integration of digital tools in presenting biological classifications can enhance the learning experience by providing interactive and dynamic educational resources. Tools like PowerPoint and Canva allow for the incorporation of multimedia elements such as videos, animations, and hyperlinks, which can enrich content and engage learners more fully. They also enable collaborative learning and easy modifications, fostering a more in-depth exploration of classification topics and better accommodation of diverse learning styles .

The classification system enhances scientific communication by establishing a universal language that scientists worldwide can use to refer to organisms. This standardized system reduces confusion and ambiguity, allowing researchers from different regions and disciplines to share and integrate findings effectively. It also aids in distinguishing closely related species, thereby facilitating clarity in conservation strategies and biological studies .

Designating specific submission formats for classification projects, such as posters or digital presentations, fosters creativity and encourages students to engage with the material in a visually compelling way. These formats require students to organize their findings concisely and clearly, ensuring they comprehend and can communicate complex information effectively. Furthermore, such formats simulate professional scientific communication methods, preparing students for real-world applications .

Visuals play a crucial role in educational presentations on the classification of organisms by enhancing understanding and retention of information. Clear drawings or photos reinforce written descriptions and scientific data, enabling learners to visualize and differentiate between organisms within their classification groups. Charts and tables help distill complex information into easily digestible formats, aiding in the quick comprehension of relationships and categorizations .

Organized charts and tables in a classification project contribute to cognitive development by promoting logical thinking and data interpretation skills. They require students to categorize information hierarchically, enhancing memory retention and understanding through structured data visualization. This practice helps students draw connections between different concepts and improves their ability to analyze and synthesize information systematically .

Choosing different ecosystems is crucial for exploring biodiversity because each ecosystem hosts unique species adapted to its specific environmental conditions. By examining a variety of ecosystems—such as forests, deserts, oceans, and ponds—students can gain insights into the adaptations and ecological roles of organisms, thus recognizing the broad range of life forms and their classification. This diverse focus underscores the richness of life and prompts deeper investigations into environmental interactions and conservation needs .
