A cause is a reason why something happens.
A cause always happens before the effect but sometimes it
is not written or told first.
An effect is what happens because of something. It is the
result of the cause.
Study these sentences:
1. Milo was angry with the boy because the boy repeated
what he said.
This sentence shows cause and effect.
The cause answers the questions why.
The effect is the event or the result.
Milo was angry. Why?
Because the boy repeated what he said. This is the cause or
the reason why Milo was angry.
Milo was angry is the effect or the result of what the boy did
to him.
2. Milo was by the seashore because he was looking for
shells.
Why was Milo by the seashore? The answer to this question
is the cause.
Milo was by the seashore is the event or the result.
Cause and reason are synonyms, and effect and result
are synonyms, too. There are word clues that signify cause-
effect relationship like so, so that, because and as a result.
