Abstract

The web application for the "Smart Window Controller using IoT" is designed to provide a user-friendly
and scalable platform for remotely managing motorized sliding windows in various settings such as
homes, hospitals, schools, colleges, industries, and hotels. The application integrates seamlessly with IoT-
enabled window control systems, allowing users to operate and monitor multiple windows through a
centralized dashboard. By leveraging real-time data from sensors installed on each sliding window, the
application enhances both convenience and safety for users.

At its core, the web application enables users to remotely open and close windows, monitor their status,
and receive alerts about critical events. When an obstacle is detected in the window's path, the sensors
trigger an immediate notification to the user via the web interface, as well as push notifications or SMS
alerts. This feature prevents damage to the window and ensures the safety of users and their environment.
In addition, the system sends notifications upon successful closure or opening of the window, providing
peace of mind, especially in cases where windows are left open in adverse weather conditions or for
security reasons.

The application features a secure login system, supporting multiple user roles and permissions to allow
differentiated access based on the environment in which the system is deployed. For example, a hotel or
hospital may have several administrators with access to different zones or windows, while individual
users in residential settings can control only their own windows.

The backend is equipped with APIs for efficient communication between the web application and IoT
devices, ensuring that commands are executed in real-time and sensor data is updated instantly. The
scalable architecture allows for easy deployment on cloud platforms such as AWS, ensuring the system
can manage a large number of windows across different locations simultaneously. Moreover, the system
is designed with data encryption and secure communication protocols to safeguard against unauthorized
access.

This web application not only enhances operational efficiency but also improves safety and energy
conservation by providing users with real-time insights and control over their environment’s windows,
making it an essential component of modern smart building management.

Overview
The web application, “Smart Window Controller using IoT” is a sophisticated method of controlling
motorized sliding windows in homes, hospitals, schools, hotels, and industries. This application takes
advantage of the IoT technologies to enable control and monitoring of windows in real time as a way of
achieving both convenience as well as safety. Given the opportunity to receive alerts on obstacle
detection, successful window closing and other significant events, the presented system enhances the
handling of building infrastructure enormously.
This project aims at exercising an automatic control of windows to minimize on manual operations more
especially as a result of this project the windows are well closed every time they are required to be closed
for instance during extreme weather conditions. The web application is the interface which also
implements the main control page and provides real-time feedback. Existing in the system, users can
access the system from any place by using mobile devices or using computers, thus improving
convenience and management.
Combining sensors/motorized systems/IoT, the application establishes a smart environment that may be
used in different environments. It is intended to be efficient, safe, and adaptable for an individual
homestead and a big commercial or industrial as well as institutional complex.

System Study
The system study entails the assessment of the existing processes in an organization with a view of
pointing out areas that could be best handled through the use of automation or optimization. With
reference to the context of the research project ‘‘Smart Window Controller using IoT’’, the paper
examines the conventional models of window management, drawbacks of these models and possibilities
offered by contemporary IoT devices.
Sliding windows, as a rule, have a manual operation; this is irrational because it is rather complicated to
regulate numerous windows in big buildings and on the upper floors. Especially if hygiene or security is
an imperative – for example in hospitals or industries manual operation can pose both safety and
productivity issues. Furthermore, with a manual operation, there is no real-time monitoring, which is a
great advantage especially in environments where the condition of the window determines comfort, safety
and energy control.
The rising need for smart solutions has paved way for the use of automation in buildings where part or
whole of building infrastructure can be regulated through a central control point. Windows for instance
are one of the most important aspects determining ventilation, lighting and security and are therefore
appropriate for automation. The possible prospects of IoT-based solutions with regard to windows are the
ability to automate window movement while also having the ability to remotely control and individually
monitor the windows in real time.
The study therefore establishes the need for a smart solution to regulate windows to enhance productivity,
safety and energy usage. These needs are met by the IoT-based “Smart Window Controller” which will
allow users to control the windows, as well as get the information about their state, and get notifications
about critical events.

Existing System
The previous systems for smart window control have, under their hood, some advanced automation
technologies to open windows and integrate them with sensors for temperature, humidity, and rainfall. A
computer immediately adopts this signal and regulates the position of the window by itself on the basis of
detected data from the sensor. These, therefore, will provide comfort to the householder in a quiet
manner. These systems are normally integrated into larger home automation systems and are usually
expensive and complicated to install.

The basic ones would, in turn, include all the physical control features, using switches or remote controls.
Very few apply web-based interfaces to control remotely. Your project enhances this simplicity by
introducing the feature of opening and closing the windows with a website button, hence providing a
straightforward, user-friendly, and cost-effective alternative against fully automated systems.

Manual Window Operation

The control of most windows in residential, commercial, and institutional buildings remains mechanical.
Windows can be opened or closed only by manually operating them, which takes a lot of time, especially
on large windows. This approach provides not real time monitoring; windows may be left open for awhile
which often leads to security issues or energy squanderage.

Limited Automation

Some of the current systems comprise of up and down basic motorized window control where windows
can be adjusted using remote or a switch. Nevertheless, these systems do not converge with IoT
functionalities, real-time visibility or implementation of automatic detection of barriers. They also
generally do not have capacity whereby they are fit for use in multi-building facilities, but rather smaller,
localized facilities.

Project Overview

The proposed system, the “Smart Window Controller using IoT” project seeks to remove the challenges
facing current systems as it will comprise of a web base application that will enable the control and
monitoring of the motorized sliding windows. The basic features of the project are motorized windows,

Applying software engineering approach

6.1. System development life cycle (SDLC)
When developing the “Smart Window Controller using IoT,” it is developed under the software
development life cycle (SDLC) method, which creates a successful step-by-step development flow. The
phases include:

Requirement Analysis: Epistemology: Recognize and appreciate the user needs, system capabilities and
hardware integration.
System Design: The layout of the architecture of the web application that will be implemented, choice of
the database and communication protocols.
Implementation: Predicting the frontend and the backend and microcontroller firmware.
Testing: After confirming that system functions properly it is necessary to ensure that windows can be
operated remotely, get notifications, and that obstacle detection features respond as expected.
Deployment: Implementing the system either on the cloud or local based servers.
Maintenance: Updating the system and making sure that it is always running in the long run.
6.2. Modular Design
To facilitate scalability and integration, the current project has been designed to be modular in approach.
Every one of them, including the user interface, API and the hardware controllers, are written
independently and then interfaced later. This approach makes the system more manageable and easy to
add onto as time goes by.

6.3. Agile Methodology

During the development of the application, changes and feedback are integrated through the help of that
Agile methodology. This makes it possible to develop the system incrementally and have confidence that
the final product will satisfactorily meet the user’s needs. There is feedback obtained at specific intervals
so as to reflect any alteration in the requirements.

6.4. Security Engineering

This system of work is conceived and implemented with the security of the participants in mind. Users
use the secure sockets layer- transportation layer security standards to guarantee all the data being
transferred, while the ones that need to access the windows have to auithenticate themselves. Further, we
establish RBAC to economize on privileges where certain roles are accorded varying levels of access.
6.5. Testing Strategy
Unit Testing: Most of these modules, for instance, motor control, sensors incorporation, and the interface
modules, are checked singly.
Integration Testing: IET is conducted as a way of verifying the performance of the web application when
integrated with IoT devices after unit testing.
User Acceptance Testing (UAT): The consumers participate in the testing of the system, to ascertain that
they are satisfied with the simplified system.
Security Testing: Security tests help to check the ability to protect the system from unauthorized users
violating the system security.
