Policy:
All volunteers are required to follow the identified volunteer dress code and maintain
appropriate appearance.
Procedure:
• Volunteers are not permitted to wear
• halter style tops
• sleeveless tops
• canvass shoes
• open toe and heel shoes – sandals
• Volunteers may wear shorts providing they are a walking length
• Volunteers are permitted to wear jeans or any other attire appropriate to the event
• Volunteers are not permitted to wear clothing that exposes their midriff and/or cleavage
• Where possible, volunteers will have a residence-designated uniform, i.e.: vest, apron, etc.
Note: Depending on the residence/departments/team member roles, dress code may vary but
the general guidelines on Dress Code and Name Tags should be followed – Policy ADM-IV-4.4.

Policy:
All clothing worn must fit properly, be clean, pressed and in good repair, and follow the
residence’s specific standard.
Dress Code:
• Black Socks and Black dress pants
• Black, enclosed, low-heeled shoes, with non-slip soles are required, and must be clean and
polished at all times. (See Safe Footwear Policy HS-XXI-015).
• Hair must be clean and tidy.
• Long hair must be worn up.
• A hairnet that completely covers hair shall be worn in the kitchen
• Beard covers must be worn in the kitchen.
• Name tags are to be worn at all times.
• Jewellery, such as earrings, nose rings, lip rings, eyebrow rings, bracelets, rings, wrist
watches and necklaces will not be worn, with the exception of wedding bands, and medic
alert bracelets, due to potential for cross contamination and health and safety.
• Fingernails must be clean and trimmed.
• Nail polish, acrylic, gel or any type of artificial nails are not permitted.
• Food handlers must change their aprons to residence designated serving apron when
working in the dining room.

POLICY:
In addition to Dress Code policies in Administration Manual, staff will ensure that they are
adhere to principles of infection prevention and control related to clothing worn in the workplace.
PROCEDURE:
All staff providing direct or indirect care to residents will follow the practices outlined below:
Hair:
• Hair should be clean, neat and tidy
• Hair fastenings should be minimal
• Long hair should be tied up off the collar when working in the clinical setting
Jewelry:
• Rings with stone settings must not be worn in clinical/direct care situations, as they
compromise hand hygiene. One plain wedding band is acceptable
• Wrist watches, bracelets, bangles, or wrist adornments must be removed when caring
for residents (exception: Medical Alert Bracelets) as they inhibit correct hand hygiene
Uniforms:
Footwear:
• Suede or fabric shoes are not acceptable as these cannot be shoe polished or machine
washed.
Dress Code for Staff Who Do NOT Wear a Uniform, Including Medical Staff:
• Long sleeves should not be worn in the clinical/direct care setting and when assessing
residents due to increased potential of the cuffs coming into contact with residents and
becoming contaminated.
Dress Code for Staff Wearing a Uniform:
• Sleeves should end above the elbow. Long sleeves should not be worn in the
clinical/direct care setting and when assessing residents due to the increased potential
of the cuffs coming into contact with residents and becoming contaminated.
• Material should be such that it may be laundered on a hot wash (above 650C) to ensure
adequate decontamination. A clean uniform must be worn every shift/work day.
• Sweaters or jackets worn in clinical care, including fleece products, must be washable.
• It is preferred that uniforms are changed as soon as possible after finishing work.
• Uniforms should not be worn when visiting public areas such as stores.
• If a staff member works at another facility, the same uniform should not be worn
between facilities.

Fingernails
• Should be kept short, clean and neat
• Nail varnish, false nails, nail extensions or nail jewelry/gems are not permitted as they
have been proven to harbour microorganisms.
Staff with questions or seeking exclusion from the dress code and related policies are to speak
with their supervisor.
