Canadian Driver's Licence Guide 2019
are required to carry a driver’s licence that is valid for the vehicle and
conditions under which it is operated.
This guide will identify each of the 13 Canadian jurisdictions (10 provinces
and three territories) and their driver licencing classification system. The
content includes the driver licence class, type of vehicle permitted to be
operated and restriction/endorsement codes.

The “Canadian Driver’s Licence Reference Guide” is designed to be used
as guidelines only. While the guidelines represent good practices, they
may not conform exactly to current provincial/territorial regulations.
Inspectors are cautioned to always follow current regulations when
determining what licence information is required.

7 14 CLASS 7 LICENCE
* Permits the holder to operate an off-highway
GDL vehicle, a moped, a motor vehicle described in
Class 5 as a learner, or a motorcycle as a learner if the person is at least
16 years of age. The learner must be accompanied in the motor vehicle
by a person who is at least 18 years of age, holds a non-GDL operator’s
licence classified for the operation of the motor vehicle driven and who
is seated next to the learner and teaching the learner to operate the
vehicle. The supervisor of a person learning to operate a motorcycle
shall be at least 18 years of age, be the holder of a non-GDL Class 6
licence and may supervise that person while occupying the passenger
seating position on the learning rider’s motorcycle, following on another
motorcycle or following in a vehicle.
CLASS 6 LICENCE
Permits the holder to operate a motorcycle, a moped and an off-
highway vehicle. Operation of vehicles in Classes 1 to 5 are prohibited,
unless the motorcycle Class 6 licence is held in combination with
Classes 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 licence.
CLASS 5 LICENCE
Permits the holder to operate the vehicles listed in the Class 5 vehicle
sections (excluding a motorcycle, unless for learning). A Class 5 driver's
licence holder shall not drive a motor vehicle with a seating capacity of
more than 15 when the vehicle is transporting passengers and a motor
vehicle transporting passengers for hire.
CLASS 4 LICENCE
Permits the holder to operate any motor vehicle or combination of
motor vehicles that the holder of a Class 5 operator’s licence may
operate. All motor vehicles under Classes 1, 2, 3 and 6 for learning only.
Requires a medical examination.
CLASS 3 LICENCE
Permits the holder to operate any motor vehicle or
combination of vehicles that the holder of a Class 5 operator’s licence
may operate. All motor vehicles under Classes 1, 2 and 6 for learning
only.
CLASS 2 LICENCE
Permits the holder to operate any motor vehicle or combination of
vehicles that the holder of a Class 3, 4 or 5 operator’s licence may
operate. Class 1 and 6 vehicles for learning. Requires a medical
examination.
CLASS 1 LICENCE
Permits the holder to operate any
motor vehicle or combination of
vehicles other than a motorcycle. Class 6 type vehicles for learning.

NOTES
Drivers operating vehicles equipped with air brakes require a “Q” endorsement on any
class of licence excluding Class 1. The Class 1 licence includes the air brake endorsement.
Drivers of single motor vehicles registered as farm vehicles do not require an air brake “Q”
endorsement, provided any trailer is not equipped with air brakes.

3 18 The holder of a Class 3 licence may operate all vehicles in Class
5, plus any two-axle vehicle towing a towed vehicle, if the towed
vehicle is registered for more than 4,500 kg gross vehicle mass
but not equipped with air brakes, any three-axle vehicle, or a
vehicle with three or more axles towing a towed vehicle not
equipped with air brakes.

of any vehicle in Class 5, while learning to operate it. May operate a
moped.*** A person wishing to operate a moped only will be tested on a
moped and restricted to a moped.***
5 17 CLASS 5 VEHICLES

bus, taxi-cab or ambulance; any

Nova Scotia Driver’s Licence
RESTRICTIONS
Most restriction codes are printed on the back of the driver’s licence. Some
codes (i.e., area restrictions) may be too lengthy to print on the back of the
card. Those codes will cause a large red “R” to be printed on the front of
the licence to alert law enforcement’s attention to the restriction. In order
to know what these particular codes mean, law enforcement must contact
the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
Many restriction codes will also cause a large red “R” to be printed on
the front of the driver’s licence even where the code itself prints fully
on the back of the licence. Again, it is expected that this will draw law
enforcement’s attention to the particular restriction.
The Nova Scotia driver’s licence does not print a “Y” or “N” on the front of
the licence to indicate whether the particular driver has any restrictions.
ENDORSEMENTS
The following codes are used and displayed on the licence:

licence with a Condition 15 “Valid for Towing Trailer Over 4500 kg.”

A learner’s licence permitting the holder to drive
as a learner within Class 5 or Class 6, as shown on
licence, and accompanied by a licenced driver
with at least 24 months experience in a Class 5
vehicle or Class 6 (when operating a motorcycle).
6 16 CLASS 6 VEHICLE
Motorcycles.

Permits the holder to operate a motorcycle. Operation of vehicles in
Classes 1 to 5 are prohibited, unless the Class 6 licence is held in

be deemed a Class G vehicle, provided the combined gross weight is not in
excess of 11,000 kg.
NOTES
• Every driver under 22 years old must have a blood alcohol concentration level of zero
while driving a motor vehicle on a highway.
• A Class D vehicle licenced as a farm vehicle used by a farmer for personal transport or
carrying products without compensation is deemed to be a Class G vehicle.
• A tow truck towing a vehicle over 4,600 kg will not be deemed to be a Class A vehicle.
• A pick-up truck towing a house trailer equipped with a fifth wheel where the house
trailer exceeds 4,600 kg but the total combined weight of the pick-up truck and house
trailer does not exceed 11,000 kg is deemed a Class G vehicle, provided the trailer is
being towed for personal purposes without compensation and the pick-up truck and
trailer are not equipped with air brakes.
• All classes of licences authorize the operation of a motor-assisted bicycle or
motorized snow vehicle.
• A Class F motor vehicle, other than an ambulance or carpool vehicle, as defined in the
Public Vehicles Act, with a designed seating capacity for not more than 11 passengers
that is used for personal purposes without compensation shall be deemed a Class G
motor vehicle.
• The holder of a Class M licence may operate a Class G vehicle while receiving
instruction and accompanied by a proper licenced driver.
• A person may hold a second drivers licence only when the second licence is a Class
M1 motorcycle learners licence.
• An applicant for a Class B or E licence must be a graduate from a Driver Improvement

• In early 2017, "X" is a valid indicator of sex in the "sex" field of the driver’s licence.

NOTE
Quebec is holding an experiment on commercial driver’s licences. It allows 40 students to
get a learners permit at age 17 or 18 for Classes 1, 2 and 3. It allows that learner not to be
accompanied by an experienced driver if they carry an approved commercial vehicle training
school document. This exemption is not valid outside of Quebec.

The earliest possible age for a full Class 5 licence is 17.5 years. Only then can a person drive
as a learner for Classes 1, 2, 3 and 4.
A Class 3 DL does not automatically include a Class 4 vehicle unless specifically noted on
the submitted driver’s medical exam report.
NOTES
* While learning in Class 2 and 4 vehicles, not allowed to carry passengers other than an
instructor.
An instructor must have held the same class of licence for two years in the class of vehicle
being used for learning.
