Chapter 22: The Cursed Vale

The journey to Nythra took several days, each one more grueling than the last. The air grew colder,
and the land became desolate—twisted trees with bark like blackened stone reached toward the
sky, their branches clawing at the wind. A heavy fog clung to the ground, making every step feel
like it led deeper into a forgotten realm. Erynn could feel the weight of the land pressing against
her, as though it itself resented their presence.

The further they ventured, the more ominous the landscape became. Kael, ever vigilant, kept a
close watch on the terrain, his sharp eyes scanning for any signs of danger. Lyria, always calm in the
face of adversity, maintained an air of quiet strength. But even she couldn't ignore the growing
tension in the air.

As they neared the edges of the Cursed Vale, Erynn felt a shiver crawl up her spine. The shard in
her possession was colder now, and its pulse had grown erratic. It seemed to resonate with
something in the distance, as though calling out to the Heartstone itself. Erynn knew it was only a
matter of time before they reached the heart of the ritual.

By the time the sun sank beneath the horizon, they had arrived at the entrance to the ruins of
Nythra. The ancient city stood before them, a sprawling labyrinth of crumbled stone and vine-
choked walls. Once a grand citadel, Nythra had long been abandoned, its secrets buried beneath
layers of time and dust. Now, it seemed to pulse with dark energy, the remnants of a long-
forgotten power.

“The ritual is within,” Alaric said, his voice low but firm. “Stay sharp. We don’t know what we’re
walking into.”

Erynn nodded, her grip tightening around the shard. She could feel the energy in the air—thick,
suffocating, and unnatural. Whatever lay ahead, it wasn’t just the Shattered Circle they had to
worry about. The emissary’s warning had been clear: creatures from beyond the veil were waiting
for them.

As they ventured deeper into the ruins, the silence became suffocating. There were no birds, no
wind, no sound of life—only the distant creak of crumbling stone. They moved cautiously, with
Kael scouting ahead while the rest of the team followed in close formation.

The further they moved into Nythra, the more distorted the world seemed. Shadows danced at the
edge of their vision, and strange whispers floated through the air, unintelligible but chilling. Erynn
could feel the pulse of the shard growing stronger, a magnetic pull drawing her deeper into the
heart of the city. It was almost as though the land itself was alive, reacting to her presence.

“Wait,” Kael called, his voice tense.

The group came to a halt as Kael signaled for them to be quiet. The silence was deafening. Erynn’s
heart raced as she looked around, instinctively reaching for her blade. Alaric stepped forward, eyes
narrowing as he scanned the shadows.

Then, from the darkness, it emerged.

A hulking figure, its form made of shifting shadows and jagged, glowing eyes, stepped into the
moonlight. It was like nothing they had ever seen before—an abomination of twisted limbs and
unnatural movements, its very presence distorting the air around it. Behind it, more shapes began
to emerge, one after another, filling the ruins with a sense of dread.
The emissary’s words rang in Erynn’s mind: “Guardians—creatures from beyond the veil.”

Alaric’s voice was steady as he drew his sword. “Form up! Protect the Heartstone!”

The first creature lunged, and the Guardians reacted instinctively, drawing their weapons and
moving into battle formation. Erynn could feel the energy building within her, the shard pulsing in
time with her heartbeat as she prepared herself for the fight.

The creatures were fast, their movements jerky and unpredictable. Their attacks were relentless,
but the Guardians were well-coordinated, each one fighting with the precision that came from
years of training. Erynn’s blade danced through the air, each strike infused with the raw energy of
the Heartstone that flowed through her.

But the creatures kept coming, and with each strike, they seemed to grow stronger. It wasn’t just
their physical strength that made them formidable—it was the strange energy they radiated, a
force that seemed to sap their willpower and cloud their minds.

Erynn’s breath came in quick gasps as she fought back-to-back with Alaric, her strikes landing true
but not enough to end the battle. The creatures seemed to be endless, their forms always shifting,
as though the very shadows themselves had come to life. They fought as if driven by something far
older than any mortal will.

"We need to end this!" Lyria shouted, cutting down one of the beasts with a swift blow. "They're
too many!"

Kael’s eyes flickered toward the ruins, scanning the area. “We need to get to the center. The ritual
is there. We don’t stop it now, and it’s over.”

Without hesitation, Alaric nodded. “Move, now!”

The Guardians pushed forward, cutting their way through the shadowy creatures. But with every
step, the shadows seemed to press in around them, thicker and darker. The creatures were
relentless, as if trying to prevent them from reaching their goal.

Finally, they reached the heart of the ruins. In the center of a massive courtyard, an altar stood,
bathed in an eerie, flickering light. Dark tendrils of energy spiraled around the altar, feeding into an
enormous crystal suspended above it, the same kind of dark crystal they had seen at the citadel.

The ritual was already in motion.

Erynn’s heart pounded in her chest as she saw the familiar shapes of the Shattered Circle’s
followers standing around the altar, their robes flowing in the unnatural wind that swept through
the ruins. At the center of the group was a figure—their leader, unmistakable even from a
distance. Ethrin.

"You’re too late," Ethrin’s voice rang out, clear and chilling. “The balance is already broken.”

Erynn’s hand tightened around the shard, its cold surface biting into her skin. The Heartstone
pulsed in response, and for the first time since they’d arrived, the shadows seemed to hesitate, as
if sensing the power that had arrived with them.

The battle for the balance had only just begun. And this time, Erynn knew that nothing would be
the same.
