MERCHANDISE
Merchandising is the process of planning right merchandise at right time in
the right quantity and at the right price to meet the needs of the company’s
target customer. Apparel merchandising involves a constant watch of the
production of the apparel products. It is an intricate and detail oriented job. If
it can be done properly can be very rewarding. On the country, if it is done
with lack of knowledge, insufficient skill and thoroughness, it can be
destructive. As the job of the merchandiser is to have the right product, at
the right time, in correct quantity and in correct quality, the merchandiser
should have constant eye on the manufacture and communicate with the
manufacturer to get the goods as per the requirement of the buyer. The
ultimate aim an apparel merchandiser is to satisfying customer needs is met.
Fig. Planning of merchandising in garments industry.
The manufacturing factory as per the requirement suppliers the fabric and a
ledger is maintained regularly to assess the production status. The
accessories such as label, button, zipper, sewing thread, packing materials
are collected from outside sometime mentioned by the buyer through back-
to-back L/Cs. The merchandising department also looks for the sources for
procuring yarns to produce fabric. Merchandising department in garment
industry monitors the production status regularly and ensures timely delivery
of the shipment.
Sampling Machines-
1. Flat lock machine
2. Overlock machine
Flat lock machine:
The cutting department gets a cut order plan from the production
manager. According to the cut plan, the cutting in-charge generates a
fabric requirement sheet or requisition slip to the fabric store to issue
fabrics.
The fabric receiving process from the fabric store may be done on the
same day of the cutting or one day before the cutting schedule.
2. Relaxation of fabric:
Knitted fabrics require relaxation before cutting. After receiving the
fabric from the fabric store, the cutting department opens the fabric
from the fabric roll and lays it on the table for relaxation for some
hours before cutting. Factories also relax fabric in the fabric store
overnight after opening the fabric rolls. Tis process help in controlling
fabric shrinkage. This activity is not required for all type of fabrics.
5. Planning markers:
The cutting master plans marker ways, marker lengths and the
numbers of plies to be laid in each lay.
6. Cutting fabrics:
After making the marker, garment patterns are cut and taken out from
the layer. Various technologies are used for cutting fabric layers, such
as straight knife cutting, band knife machine cutting and a computer-
controlled automatic cutting machine.
[Link], bundling and numbering of garment plies parts):
After cutting the fabric, layers are sorted size-wise and colour-wise.
Each ply is numbered using stickers. Bundles are kept on inventory
tables, before these are sent to undergo the next process.
[Link]-cutting panels:
Mm Re-cutting is done for garment components that require to be
replaced in bundles. Re-cutting requests are received from the sewing
department for defective garment parts. Re-cutting is also done for block
panels cut for the printing and embroidery processes. After receiving
garment panels from the printer or embroiderer, these panels are reshaped.
STITCHING
Departments such as Cutting, Sewing and Finishing are primary departments
of a garment factory. The name of the departments itself explains that what
are the main functions of these departments. Within each department there
are number of steps through which raw materials are passed to make a
finished and packed garment. These steps or sub-processes may vary
product to product. Most common steps in each departments in apparel
industry have been listed below.
Cutting Department:
The main role of a cutting department is to cut garment components from
fabric rolls or fabric thans as per style specifications. And send cut
components to sewing department in bundles. A cutting department of a
garment manufacturing unit includes following sub- process.
Fabric Relaxation
Fabric Spreading/ layering or cutting table
Maker making
Cutting – manual cutting ( using scissors), machine cutting,
automatic cutting
Numbering of garments plies( parts )
Shorting and bundling
Inspection of cut components
Shorting of printed and embroidery panels
Re- cutting of panels
Fusing Garment Components
SEWING DEPARTMENT
Sewing department is the heart of a manufacturing unit. Cut components are
assembled in sewing department in assembly line. List of sub-processes
those are done in sewing department includes.
Sewing Machine
A sewing machine is a textile machine used to stitch fabric, cards and other
material together with thread. Sewing machines were invented during the
first Industrial Revolution to decrease the amount of manual sewing work
performed in clothing companies. Since the invention of the first working
sewing machine, generally considered to have been the work of Englishman
Thomas Saint in 1790, the sewing machine has vastly improved the
efficiency and productivity of fabric, clothing and needle industries.
Home sewing machines are similar designed for one person to
manually sew individual items while using a single stitch type. Modern
sewing machines are designed in such a way that the fabric easily glides in
and out of the machine without the hassle of needles and thimbles and other
such tools used in hand sewing, automating the process of stitching and
saving time.
Industrial sewing machines, by contrast, are larger, faster, more complex,
and more varied in their size, cost, appearance, and
Over lock
An overlock stitch sews over the edge of one or two pieces of cloth for
edging, hemming or seaming. Usually an overlock sewing machine will cut
the edges of the cloth as they are fed through (such machines are called
‘serge’s’ in North America), though some are made without cutters. The
inclusion of automated cutters allows overlock machines to create finished
seams easily and quickly. An overlock sewing machine differs from a
lockstitch sewing machine in that it uses loppers fed by multiple thread
cones rather than a bobbin. Loppers serve to create thread loops that pass
from the needle thread to the edges of the fabric so that the edges of the
fabric are contained within the seam. Overlock sewing machines usually run
at high speeds, from 1000 to 9000 rpm, and most are used in industry for
edging, hemming and seaming a variety of fabrics and products. Overlock
WASHING DEPARTMENT
The technology which is used to modify the outlook, appearance,
fashion, and comfortability of garments is called garments
washing. Garments washing are the aesthetic finish given to the
denim fabric to enhance the appeal and to provide strength.
Garments washing can be done by following a process flow chart,
which is deeply discussed in this article.
1. Thread Trimming:
In the stitching department, thread trails and thread chains are not
trimmed neatly. Uncut threads and thread tails in garments are trimmed
in the finishing department by helpers. Uncut and loose threads on
garments are considered defects.
2. Checking garments:
All garments are checked at the finishing stage for visuals and
measurement. Finishing checkers check the complete garment inside and
out. Checking is done for garment detailing. Such as care labelling, and
trims.
4. Removing stains:
Stains and spots are found on garments. Spots are removed using a hand
spot gun or by using a stain removing machine prior to pressing. Dust and
stains can be removed by machine washing. So, many times finishing
department wash ga
5. Repair work and mending:
Defective garments may need to repair for stitching and fabric defects.
All repair activities are done in finishing department itself instead of
sending defective garments to stitching department.
6. Ironing garments:
Garments are ironed using a steam iron. This is done to remove creases
in the garment. For knitted garments measurements are set by steam
press. Vacuum pressing tables are used for garment pressing.
8. Packing garments:
Finally, properly folded garments are packed into poly bags as per
customer requirements. Individual poly bags are then packed into bigger
cartons.
9. Preparation of packing list:
The packing in-charge prepares a packing list for the shipment. After
packing is completed for an order, the finishing department informs the
concerned merchant.
PRESSING
Pressing Process:
The process by which the unwanted creases and wrinkles are removed
from the garments and the outlook of the garments is improved as well is
termed as pressing. The pressing process influences the final garment
appearance and hence the garment appeal. Finishing and pressing
machines contour the semi finished garment panels as well as finished
garments by bringing down the fibres in the fabric to an elastic state and
then deforming and setting them. It is also known as ironing. Pressing is
an important finishing process of in garment industry. In garments
industries there is a separate section for ironing the products. It is
generally done by heated plates and electric irons in moist condition of
garments.
1. Moisture:
Moisture is introduced by the use of steam. Steam at different
pressures has different moisture contents, the higher the steam
pressure, the lower the moisture in the steam. The presence of
moisture is required to aid In fiber swelling and thus shape
stabilisation. Different fibers require different amounts of moisture. For
example, natural fibres such as cotton and wool and regenerated
cellulose fibres such as bamboo viscose and viscose rayon require the
presence of moisture in the steam, and therefore steaming tables are
usually preferred. On the other hand, synthetic fibres require heat to
promote swelling and therefore relaxation of the structure. Excessive
moisture may cause fabric shrinkage and colour bleeding.
2. Pressure:
Pressure is applied to the garment during pressing to give good crease
retention and permanency. Excessive pressure may result in garment
or crease distortion.
3. Vacuum:
Vacuum is applied at the completion of the pressing operation. This
draws cool air through the garment, reducing the garment
temperature, lowering the moisture content and increasing shape
retention. Particularly important for garments made from wool and
wool blends, this also applies to cotton and viscose blends with
synthetic fibres such as polyester and nylon Doodled
Classification of Pressing:
The basic processes that are involved in pressing can be divided into
two groups:
1. Under pressing:
It is the pressing operation performed on garment components as they
are made up.
Storage
The location system of storage is followed i.e. fabric packages are stored in
two areas-:
Checked fabric and
Unchecked fabric.
Fabric issue:
The fabric store issues the fabric for cutting on challah. All fabric is not
issued at one go: instead, it is issued as required. The challah contains
information regarding style no, colour, buyer’s name, and quantity to
be issued and issued for which production unit.
TRIMS AND ACCESSORY STORE
The raw materials used in sewing room other than fabric are called Trims. On
the other hand, materials are directly attached to the fabric to make a
garment are called trims. Like: Threads, buttons, lining. Interlining, zippers,
labels, care labels, etc. (Interlining is used as shape forming/preserving
materials.)
