ABSTRACT
Upon observing the world I noticed how people interacts with one another. There are distinct words, phrases
and sentences that varies from their denotative meaning to their connotative meaning. This research aims to
determine and understand the underlying factor/s that affects the meaning of language to its corresponding
receiver. It is a qualitative research using descriptive design to merely observe objects that determines a
phenomenon.I believe that this research is worth seeking to as this deepens the understanding of human to one
another concluding a possibility of a much diverse open-minded society.

People use language as a modem of communication in everyday lives. What we hear and what we interpret
affects our response. In a world where language is progressive there may be instances where emotions affect the
content of the meaning of a word or phrase which may affects the communication that took place between
people to people. Every human has its innate ability to feel, think and interact. We have different principles and
emotional intelligence. This research will seek the depth of language semantically: scrutinizing the function of
lexical semantics to society. Lexical Semantics is an academic discourse that talks about the meaning of words
and how they present a message from the perspective of the person neither in text nor verbal cues.
(Paradis,2012)

This research aims to identify how emotion and language interacts with one another to provide meaning in
communication. This is beneficial to the society as it gives understanding on how the meaning of the words be
affected to the situation, context and emotion of the speaker. Through this, we could understand and build
rapport to people in our society.
1.1 HYPOTHESIS
Following with the research’s purpose, the following questions are being investigated:
1. Do the meaning of a word, phrase, sentence change when incorporated with emotion?
2. What is the gap between connotative and denotative meaning of language?
The first question aims to understand and identify whether there is a significance between the literal
meaning and emotion to the receiver’s understanding to the meaning of the used words, phrases, sentence this is
due to the idea of how people interacts when there is a distinct emotion or humor to another. Followed by the
second hypothesis in which I also aim to understand the gap between connotative and denotative meaning of
language, through this we are able to identify the gap and what binds them that is relevant to what binds the two
defines the possibility wherein connotative and denotative meaning can be interchanged to one another
depending on the factors that involves.
2. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
I often think if the meaning of language differs on the interpretation of the person receiving it or is there a
standard way of interpreting meaning to a complex and dynamic structure externally and internally of a
language.I then find three (3) concepts that may answer my hypothesis;A research conducted by Nathan Oesch,
a post-doctoral researcher in Canada about music and language in social interaction. His research claims that
language and music are coherent to one another as music contains words and words is a part of
language(Oesch,2019).In his research It tackles about how music and language serves as an integral part of the
[Link] correlates to Reyana Larasatika thesis that music is an art that expresses emotion as she decided to
analyze the semantic structure of an album by Twenty One Pilots entitled Blurryface on [Link] her article there
are figurative speeches in a song that hides distinct emotion making the literal meaning of the text be different
to its actual meaning becoming a connotative type.

Due to this literatures I bound to find a string that uncovers the fact where there are certain words that differs
from their literal meaning through certain circumstances when associated with emotion,Their study revolves
around music and that becomes my motivation to go beyond the iceberg and determine whether there is a
significance between context and emotion in giving meaning of a [Link],I tend to go beyond music
and investigate phenomenon using videos in which pronounciation, emotion, and intonation is much
emphasized.
[Link]
I,the researcher expand the scope of delimitation of Oesch and Larasatika to movies. I’ll watch 16 episodes of a
Korean movie with an English transcription. The movie series is about the characters who struggles expressing
their emotion which I believe should be the key points in understanding meaning; to observe people who
struggles giving direct meaning and expression of their thought like music uses figurative speech to convey one.
I will find distinct scenarios wherein emotion and language interacts and use it as my data in analyzing this
phenomenon.
3.1 RESEARCH DESIGN
This research will use descriptive design as a method of conducting this qualitative research. Descriptive design
is an approach wherein the researcher doesn’t need to interact with the participants to observe distinct
phenomenon(DeMarco,2023) which suits best for a qualitative type of research where the researcher’s aim is to
understand and to determine certain phenomenon by collecting and analyzing non-numerical
data(Bhandari,2023)
3.2 OBJECT OF THE STUDY
The instrument that I’d be using for this study is the movie series “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay” directed by Park
Shin-Woo.I will observe three important characters who are Moon Gang Tae,Moon Sang Tae and Ko Moon-
[Link] Tae is a caregiver to a psychiatric hospital who takes care of his older brother Sang Tae who is
suffering from autism spectrum disorder which is a developmental disability that hinders the person from
having a normal social communication with other people (CDC,2022) while Ko Moon-Young is a writer who
suffers from a poor childhood in which she becomes an antisocial person who stuggles to attain a healthy
relationship with her feelings.
3.3 DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
I will watch and investigate the movie series using Telegram as Netflix doesn’t allow viewers to take
screenshots to their [Link] watching the series I will be able to identify certain scenarios.I will take
down notes for the scenrios, lines that hovers around the subject of the research.I will also take note of the lines
for each character that correlates to literal meaning to its connotative meaning or interchangeably if proven
possible.
3.4 DATA TREATMENT
In this study, the data being gathered will undergo certain processes to answer our hypothesis justifiably.I will
create a table that shows distinct lines for each characters and their intended meaning of the lines, these datas
will be categorized based on their disntict [Link] this I could create a narrow point of view to adapt
a much clear conclusion of the study.I would also attach excerpts or pictures that shows certain scenarios to
address expression and emotion within the series to create a visual representation of certain emotions that
affects meaning
[Link] AND DISCUSSION
Through watching and asserting the movie series by Park Shin-Woo,I collected datas that are important to come
up with a [Link] qualitative analysis shows several lines and factors that assess the connection
between emotion and language and how they provide meaning in different usage.
Moon Gang Tae in the movie hides his emotion and always puts his brother first before him so he
surpresses what he feels inside and not what actually what he wanted to [Link] pictures below shows how
emotion and words conflicts from one another as Gang Tae interacts with his autism brother and instead of
expressing anger sentements he chose to surpress his emotion and ask if he’s hungry.
The next scenario is on episode 7 by 27:22 between Gang Tae and Ko Moon-Young in which Moon Young says
“Get Lost” from a previous events and how gang tae interprets that Moon Young by those time is asking him
not to leave .

The third scenario is when Sang Tae told Moon Young that she should feed herself as she is no longer a
[Link] Young told Gang Tae that Sang Tae is slow witted and Gang Tae replied that he’s just brutally
honest at episode 8 by 6:00 minute action.

The study provides insights that individuals with developmental disabilities, such as autism, might experience and express language differently, accentuating verbal misunderstandings. For instance, Moon Sang Tae's communication reflects literal interpretations, underscoring that the complexities of connotative language may result in different understanding across diverse cognitive abilities, which impacts interaction dynamics .

The study suggests that understanding the interplay of emotion and language in communication can foster improved interactions within diverse societies. By acknowledging that meaning is context-dependent and influenced by personal experiences, societies can reduce misunderstandings and enhance empathetic connections. Such awareness could lead to more inclusive communication strategies, considering cultural and personal diversity .

The study explores the relationship between emotion and language by analyzing how emotions can alter the perceived meaning of words, phrases, or sentences in communication. It identifies these variations using examples where context and emotion affect interpretation beyond the literal meanings, as seen in the interactions between the characters in 'It's Okay Not to Be Okay.' This highlights that communication meaning is influenced by emotion, context, and syntactical structure .

The research concludes that the relationship between denotative and connotative meaning is contingent on factors like personal feelings, the current situation, and broader context, including social norms and individual experiences. This fluidity means that identical language can convey different messages depending on these influencing factors, thereby highlighting the importance of understanding these nuances in effective communication .

The interaction between Moon Gang Tae and Ko Moon-Young illustrates emotion's impact on language through scenarios where the literal interpretation differs from intended meaning. For example, Moon Young's directive 'Get Lost' can be reconciled with her emotional state and context, leading to Gang Tae understanding it as a request for company rather than its literal expulsion. This demonstrates how emotional undertones shape interpretation beyond words .

The research utilizes a descriptive design, allowing for a thorough observation of interactions without researcher interference. By focusing on a movie series and character analysis, it provides qualitative data on how emotions influence language meaning. This method effectively highlights real-world examples of semantic change, emphasizing shifts from denotative to connotative meanings driven by context and emotion, ensuring a detailed exploration of the subject .

The research concludes that context plays a crucial role in shifting the meaning from denotative to connotative. It is influenced by factors such as the situation, emotion, tone, and the individual's circumstances. This complexity is demonstrated in scenarios where characters use language that carries a deeper emotional or situational meaning than its standard definition, indicating that context binds the connotative and denotative meanings .

The study of 'It's Okay Not to Be Okay' contributes to understanding the semantic functions by illustrating how language in media encapsulates emotional depth and complex meanings. Characters' dialogue provides examples of semantic shifts from literal definitions to connotative meanings influenced by emotion. This highlights media's role as a vehicle for exploring the nuances in language that reflect real-life communication scenarios .

Individuals face challenges in expressing emotions due to potential misalignment between what is felt and what is spoken. The study finds that people like Moon Gang Tae may suppress true feelings to prioritize relational dynamics, while Ko Moon-Young uses language to disguise vulnerability. These behaviors highlight difficulties in authentic emotional expression, leading to potential misinterpretations .

Figurative language in music, as discussed in the research by Reyana Larasatika, parallels the study's examination of language and emotion by showing that both mediums convey more complex emotional messages beyond literal meanings. The connotative meanings derived from songs, like those in the album 'Blurryface,' highlight how language can change when influenced by emotions, thus supporting the study's theme that communication's meaning is dynamic and context-dependent .
