Understanding NLP

NLP enabled with ML and Deep learning algorithm can enrich the interaction between humans and
computers and learning from it to generate useful response. NLP has tremendous use in all the
industries where human interactions are involved through voice processing (what is spoken) and speech
recognition (who has spoken). Speech recognition is analogous to facial recognition. If a computer can
place a voice on a face then it is a revolutionary achievement in the field of IT forensics.
For example, if you speak to your personal digital assistant — Alexa! Switch on the TV.
The word Alexa is wake command. The term switch on is classified in application logic as a verb and TV
as a noun. From devices database, Alexa checks for TV and looks up in the commands associated with TV
and a signal is sent to the TV to get itself on.
Applications of NLP
Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Intel, Cisco, IBM and other industry giants have created time-tested and
performance-proven applications for various industries. Some common and popular applications of NLP.
Virtual Assistants:
VA helps in performing some of our tasks easily and quickly and helps us in multi-tasking. For example,
you can ask VA to search for best price for an item online while you read the incoming mail. VA usually
works on voice commands and can be initiated by a keyword called wake word.
For example, Alexa is the wake word for Amazon Alexa. You can speak a natural English sentence to
Alexa and it will interpret correctly what to do. VA runs on the algorithm which can interpret the voice
commands and detect our speech. Some popular Virtual Assistants are Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant,
Microsoft Cortana and Apple Siri.
Social Media Monitoring:
Social media contain large volume of data and cannot be handled by a traditional computer algorithm. A
powerful deep learning algorithm in NLP technique can analyse the data for a variety of purposes such
as:
 Mass sentiment analysis - Assessing people's inclination towards any incident or product.
 Customer satisfaction analysis — Assessing if customers like/dislike a product or service.
 Monitor brand promotion and popularity — estimating popularity index of any brand.
 Identifying unconstitutional content such as hate speech, bully language and fake news.
 Targeted digital marketing by analysing customer interactions.
Customer Support System
Traditional support was by shooting an email and wait for the response. Today, services are instant. We
call or chat. Over a call, an interactive voice response system enabled with NLP system speaks in a
natural human voice and understands what has been spoken. When you visit the service provider
website, you notice a chat assistant pops up by the side. That is a smart chat bot. Smart refers to Al
enabled NLP algorithm. Customers support systems enabled by NLP algorithm have many other uses
such as gathering feedback from the customer, push-promos, assistance to physically challenged people,
elderly people etc

Smart Application Features

Smart form validations: Performing validations on the data entered by the user, auto-filling information
such as city and pin based on location etc.
Spelling assistance: Autocorrect spellings of the words depending on the context and location.
Smart drafting: Suggesting next word while typing the content.
Smart Search: Google had pioneered the feature of search autocomplete in which search terms are
suggested as you type depending on your previous searches, location and context of the search. Smart
search feature is integrated in many E-Commerce sites to add product specific keywords depending on
the customers buying history to facilitate deeper search and list more relevant items.
Messenger bots for quick service call: Messenger apps just like the one from Facebook are available for
calling emergency response services and other public service like booking a cab quickly.
Text classification and character recognition: Documents can be classified into various pre-defined
category according to the nature of their content. Documents like invoices, receipts etc. can be scanned
and text can be identified and isolated by NLP application for further usage.

Healthcare and Diagnostics

A well-trained NLP algorithm can interpret and extract disease conditions such as distress, speech
disorders, mental fatigue from the words spoken by a patient. Health records in digitised form can be
processed by NLP application in predicting fatal diseases. Diagnostics reports and medical notes can be
summarised to create patient health profile quickly and correctly.

Education and Training

NLP has greater scope of application in education and training field. Helping develop language skills by
guiding on grammatical mistakes, by guiding in skills like paragraph writing, sentence framing and essay
writing. NLP with Machine learning can enhance E-learning by helping with Customised reading,
selective reading and audio summary of the content to facilitate quick revision of the key concepts.
NLP can facilitate free and affordable education with lesser intervention of instructor and quality
content. In higher studies, NLP has potential to assist in active research.

Chatbots
A chatbot is an application that can perform logical text-based chat or simulate verbal communication
with a person. A chatbot application works on either a rule-based algorithm or machine learning
algorithm. The human agent or user interacts with it through an interface which is either text oriented
or voice operated or both. Some common scenarios where bots have been a very helpful feature are:
 For serious buyers looking for specific product.
 Customers looking for assistance, service or help.
 Recording and redressing customer grievances.
 Seeking more details on a new offering.
 Securing appointments.
Types of Chatbots
Depending on the service, bots can be of as many types as there are the services such as news bot,
personal fitness bot, banking bot, travel assistance bot etc. Depending on the functionality, bots are
broadly of 2 types: Rule-based or script bot and Al-based smart bot.
Rule-based or script bot: It functions around a set of rules which are scripted in its logic. It can
respond to a specific set of commands and does not respond or responds in an undesired fashion if an
unprecedented or unmatched query is the input. Such chatbots are good in one way that they are
inexpensive to deploy. Second advantage of such bots is that they are very useful in user-specific
environment where limited functionality is actually needed. Some such common use cases are listed
here:
O Various departments in an organisation (inter-departmental interactions).
Characteristics of rule-based/ script bots are:
 Work on simple rule-based logical approach hence they are easier to develop and deploy.
 Their functionality is limited. It does not go beyond the intelligence built into their script.
 They are re-usable and can be easily integrated with the existing systems.
