Overview of Human Reproductive System

The reproductive system is responsible for producing, storing, and delivering gametes (sperm and egg cells) for reproduction. It plays a vital role in ensuring the continuation of species through fertilization and the development of offspring. Key organs include testes and ovaries, which produce gametes, and supporting structures such as the uterus in females and the vas deferens in males.

Reproductive System (Üreme Sistemi)

 Definition: The reproductive system is responsible

for producing, storing, and delivering gametes
(sperm and egg cells) for reproduction.
 Organs:
o Male: Testes, epididymis, vas deferens,

prostate gland, penis.

o Female: Ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus,

cervix, vagina.
 Functions:
o Male: Sperm production and delivery.

o Female: Egg production, fertilization, and

support of embryo development.

 Key Processes:
o Fertilization: Fusion of sperm and egg to form

a zygote.
o Menstrual Cycle: Regulates egg release and

uterus preparation for pregnancy.

HUMAN REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM SUMMARY

Female Reproductive System:

1. Functions:
o Egg production, carrying the fetus, and hormone secretion.
2. Organs:
o Ovary: Produces eggs, secretes estrogen and progesterone.
o Fallopian Tube: Where fertilization occurs and the zygote
undergoes its first mitotic divisions.
o Uterus: The site for embryo development.
o Vagina: Passage for the expulsion of unfertilized eggs and
the fetus during birth.
3. Oogenesis:
o The process of egg cell (oocyte) production through
meiosis.
o Starts in the fetus and ends at menopause.
o If fertilization occurs, meiosis II is completed.
4. Female Hormones:
o FSH: Stimulates follicle development and estrogen
secretion.
o LH: Triggers ovulation and formation of the corpus
luteum.
o Estrogen and Progesterone: Prepare the uterus for
pregnancy.
o LTH and Oxytocin: Control milk production and labor.
5. Menstrual Cycle:
o Follicular Phase (0-14 days): Follicles develop and
secrete estrogen.
o Ovulation (Day 14): The egg is released into the fallopian
tube.
o Luteal Phase (14-28 days): Corpus luteum produces
progesterone and estrogen.
o Menstruation (28-5 days): Unfertilized egg and uterine
lining are shed.

Male Reproductive System:

1. Functions:
o Sperm production and delivery to the female reproductive
system.
2. Organs:
o Testes: Produce sperm and secrete testosterone.
o Epididymis: Sperm gain the ability to move and fertilize.
o Vas Deferens: Stores and transmits sperm to the penis.
o Accessory Glands: Produce seminal fluid.
o Penis: Passage for sperm and urine to exit the body.
3. Spermatogenesis:
o The process by which spermatogonia develop into sperm
cells through meiosis.
o Begins at puberty and continues into adulthood.
oSpermatids mature in the epididymis into functional sperm
cells.
4. Male Hormones:
o FSH: Stimulates spermatogenesis.
o LH: Stimulates testosterone secretion.
o Testosterone: Promotes sperm maturation and secondary
sex characteristics.
o Inhibin: Inhibits FSH secretion.

Fertilization:

 The process where an egg and sperm cell fuse to form a 2n

chromosomal zygote.
 Only the sperm’s nucleus and centrosome enter the egg.
 The zygote inherits its centrosome from the sperm and its
mitochondria from the egg.

Multiple Pregnancies: If multiple eggs are fertilized, fraternal twins

are formed, and they have different genetic makeup.
