This slide is based the this course’s textbook:

CHAPTER 2: Mechanism Design

4.7 Normal and Tangential Acceleration

4.8 Relative Acceleration Analysis

4.1. Introduction of velocity
and acceleration analysis

 Velocity analysis involves determining

“how fast” certain points on the links of
a mechanism are traveling.
 Velocity is important because it
associates the movement of a point on
a mechanism with time.
 Often the timing in a machine is critical.

4.1. Introduction of velocity
and acceleration analysis

 Acceleration analysis involves determining

the manner in which certain points on the
links of a mechanism are either “speeding
up” or “slowing down.”
 Acceleration is a critical property because of
the inertial forces associated with it.

4.4. Velocity: Analytical Velocity
Analysis
Example:

To maximize water flow, the piston should

travel upward at a rate of 50 mm/s. In the
position shown, determine the angular
velocity that must be imposed on the
handle to achieve the desired piston
speed.

4.6. Acceleration of a Link
As with velocity, several points on a link can have different
accelerations, yet the entire link has the same rotational
acceleration.
