ASSIGNMENT 1 (GROUP)

EMK42003 – Power System Protection & Switchgear

Mark Contribution = 10 %

Maximum No. of Member for Each Group = 3

Due Date = 20 December 2024 (Friday - Before 5.00 pm)

Submission Platform = e-learning

A radial power network owned by Sabah Electricity Sdn. Bhd. (SESB) is shown in Figure 1. The
parameters for the network are listed in Appendix 1.
If = 10000 A
Figure 1

Note:

= protection coverage of R1

Your company just won the tender opened by SESB to complete the jobs as stated below:

1. The suitable CT ratio for each CT location (CT1, CT2, CT3, CT4 & CT5).
2. The protection relay settings for all the relays (R1, R3, R4 & R5).

Based on the company standard of protection system, the relay types and schemes are shown in Table 1.

Table 1
Relay Type Setting
1. Protection Zones:

• Zone 1 (forward) = 80-90 % of the protected line.

• Zone 2 (forward) = 120 % of the protected line.
• Zone 3 (forward) = 100 % of the protected line + 100
R1 Mho Distance Relay % of adjacent line.

2. Relay characteristic angle = 65°

R3 Phase Overcurrent Relay IDMT, Plug setting > 100 %, Time Dial Setting Minimum = 0.1
R4 Phase Overcurrent Relay IDMT, Plug setting > 100%, Time Dial Setting Minimum = 0.1
R5 Phase Overcurrent Relay IDMT, Plug setting > 100%, Time Dial Setting Minimum = 0.1
Note: Relay R3, R4 and R5 should operate in coordination with an ample discrimination time between
adjacent relays which relay R5 has the lowest Time Dial Setting (TDS). The discrimination time should be
between 0.2 s until 0.5 s.
