Definition
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a colorless and non-flammable gas at normal temperature
and pressure. A molecule of CO2 consists of one carbon atom and two oxygen
atoms. CO2 also plays a role in the Earth’s carbon cycle, the set of processes that
cycle carbon in many forms throughout the environment.
CO2 is an important heat-trapping (greenhouse) gas which is released through
human activities such as deforestation and burning fossil fuels. Without CO 2, our
planet would be an unlivable environment because it would be very cold.
CO2 emissions can also be released from natural processes like respiration and
volcanic eruptions.

Chemical composition
The chemical formula for carbon dioxide is CO2. Each carbon dioxide molecule
contains one carbon atom and two oxygen atoms, bound to each other by covalent
bonds. At room temperature and pressure, carbon dioxide is a gas. The carbon
dioxide molecule is linear.
Sources
Carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere by burning fossil
fuels (coal, gasoline, and natural gas)
Photosynthesis
Cement production
Deforestation
Effects
Effects on people
Effects can be broken down into short-term effects and long-term effects.
Short-term effects, which are temporary, include illnesses such
as pneumonia or bronchitis. They also include discomfort such as irritation to the
nose, throat, eyes, or [Link] can also cause headaches, dizziness, and nausea.
Long-term effects last for years or for an entire lifetime. They can even lead to a
person's death. Long-term health effects include heart disease, lung cancer,
and respiratory diseases such as emphysema.
It can also cause long-term damage to people's nerves, brain, kidneys, liver, and
other organs.
Effects on the environment
Haze, like smog, is a visible type of air pollution that obscures shapes and colors.
Hazy air pollution can even muffle sounds.
How to control
1. Use heating controls. For most of us, the first step in cutting carbon emissions it to
take control of our heating.
2. Upgrade your heating system.
3. Insulate your home.
4. Draught-proofing.
5. Low energy lighting.
6. Energy efficient appliances.
7. Low carbon travel.
8. Reduce, reuse, and recycle.
