Q: Descriptive:
You have been asked to contribute a descriptive piece of writing about secret places to
a creative writing website. In your writing, create a sense of atmosphere and focus on
colours, sounds and movements to help your reader imagine the scene.

Rough Draft:
● A place or area no one knows about
● Describing the said area using colours, sounds and movements
● Use kinetic words that describe movement like fidgeting, sliding, fluttering etc
● Make an image that a reader can imagine

The thrill of finding that personal and private space, which no one knows about, gives us a
sense of adventure and peaceful experience. It’s like your own safe haven where you can get
away from the hectic and bustling outside world. My secret place is a rarely used underground
room opened by a hatch hidden by the overgrown grass and fallen leaves.
I had stumbled upon this room accidentally while playing hide-and-seek with my siblings. The
ground makes a crunching sound as your feet walk upon the mixture of mud and gravel along
with dead leaves. As you grab the round handle latched onto the hatch, it makes a creaking
sound as if it will fall apart if you grabbed it more forcefully.
Stairs leading down to a pitch black unfamiliar territory would instil fear inside any faint hearted
person but I had gotten used to this, considering it a second home. The steps groaned with
objection as my weight was a burden on them due to their old age.
Tugging the hanging string at the bottom, bright yellow light flooded every nook and cranny of
the room, illuminating the furniture, objects and decorations placed around the small but
convenient room.
It resembles a comfortable environment for me; a maroon bean-bag, a bright blue speaker
connected with my iPod, an aged desk with a chair to study etc. There were posters of movies,
seasons, anime and famous personalities on the grey and flat walls.
Closing the hatch had stopped the pleasant autumn breeze from entering, encompassing the
room in a warm and cosy warmth. Being an avid reader, books were piled on top of each other
on a small bookshelf placed in a corner. Books of all colours, genres, authors and age were
there. The chair slid over the carpet that was already present in this room.
I could finally relax as I sat down, opening the book titled ‘Angels & Demons’ by Dan Brown to
the bookmark placed in between the pale yellow beat-up pages of the book. The black ink was
still readable through the pages; the smell of wood and smoke emanating through the covers
and pages.
Time felt like it stopped as I got lost in the story being provided through the words written on
the pages, feeling like it was slipping through without worrying me. This was peace, making me
lose myself in a fictional tale of mystery, suspense and adventure.
