2. (a) Find the difference in value between 811\frac{8}{11} of 550 and 38\frac{3}
{8} of 400.
(b) The selling price of a chair was 20% more than its cost price. It was sold at a 12%
discount during a sale. If the profit made from the sale was RM 120, calculate:
o The cost price of the chair.
o The percentage discount offered during the sale.
(c) Alex deposits RM 12,000 in a bank account offering a 4% annual compound interest
rate. Calculate the total compound interest earned after 2 years.
3. (a) Simplify the following:
i. (52+2×5−6)÷4(5^2 + 2 \times 5 - 6) \div 4.
ii. (3x2−2x+4)+(x2−5x−6)(3x^2 - 2x + 4) + (x^2 - 5x - 6).
(b) Solve the equation:
3x−5=2x+73x - 5 = 2x + 7.
5.
(a) Find the smaller angle made by the hour hand and minute hand at 6:40 p.m.
Solution:
At 6:40, the hour hand is at 6 and has moved 40/60 of the way towards 7. Each hour
represents 30°, so the hour hand is at 6 × 30° + (40/60) × 30° = 180° + 20° = 200°. The
minute hand at 40 minutes is at 40 × 6° = 240°. The difference between the two is |240° -
200°| = 40°, which is the smaller angle.
(b) In a figure, AB || CD, EF, and GH are straight lines intersecting at a point. Given that ∠AIE
= 50° and ∠GJB = 60°, find the values of angles a, b, and c.
Solution:
Using the given data and the properties of parallel lines and vertically opposite angles:
• ∠a = 60° (as it is vertically opposite ∠GJB).
• ∠b = 50° (as it corresponds to ∠AIE).
• ∠c = 180° - (∠a + ∠b) = 180° - (60° + 50°) = 70° (since angles on a straight line add up to
180°).
(c) In a figure, PQ and RS are straight lines intersecting at U. If ∠RUQ = 150°, find the values
of x and y when one of the angles is given as 2x and another as y + 30.
Solution:
Since PQ and RS are straight lines, the angles around point U add up to 360°. Thus, 150° + 2x
+ (y + 30°) = 360°.
Simplifying: 2x + y + 180° = 360°.
⇒ 2x + y = 180°.
Using additional conditions (if provided in question), solve for x and y.

(d) Calculate: (1/2) * √(64) + (-3)².
Solutions
Solution 1
For (a):
Equations: 3x - 2y = 5 and 4x + y = 10
Step 1: Solve for y from the second equation: y = 10 - 4x
Step 2: Substitute into the first equation:
3x - 2(10 - 4x) = 5
3x - 20 + 8x = 5
11x = 25
x = 25/11
Find y: y = 10 - 4(25/11) = -15/11
Solution: x = 25/11, y = -15/11.
For (b):
Equations: 2a + 3b = 7 and a - b = 3
Step 1: Solve for a from the second equation: a = b + 3
Step 2: Substitute into the first equation:
2(b + 3) + 3b = 7
2b + 6 + 3b = 7
5b = 1
b = 1/5
Find a: a = 1/5 + 3 = 16/5
Solution: a = 16/5, b = 1/5.
Solution 2
For (a):
Let Sam's age = x, Lily's age = y
5 years ago: x - 5 = 2(y - 5)
In 3 years: x + 3 = 1.5(y + 3)
Step 1: Simplify both equations:
x - 5 = 2y - 10 => x - 2y = -5
x + 3 = 1.5y + 4.5 => x - 1.5y = 1.5
Step 2: Solve simultaneously:
Subtract equations: 0.5y = 6.5 => y = 13
Substitute: x - 2(13) = -5 => x = 21
Solution: Sam = 21, Lily = 13.
For (b):
Let boys = x, girls = y
Equations:
3x + 2y + 5 = 80 (total candies)
3x + 2y = 75
Assume integer solutions: solve iteratively or use substitution.
Answer: Boys = 15, Girls = 10.
Solution 3
For (a): √(121) - √(81) = 11 - 9 = 2.
For (b): √(200) = √(100 × 2) = 10√2.
For (c): p = √(7² + 24²) = √(49 + 576) = √625 = 25.
For (d): (1/2) * √(64) + (-3)² = (1/2) * 8 + 9 = 4 + 9 = 13.
