Course title: Advanced Computational Methods for Geotechnical Engineering
Date: 03/08/2021
Assignment-Two: Submission date: after three weeks
Instruction: The assignment work should be reported independently. (MATLAB)
1. Use Finite difference method, and estimate the consolidation settlement. Consider that
the applied load is constant throughout the consolidation time. To show your
numerical results you can assume boundary conditions, thickness of consolidating
layer.
2. Consider a horizontal metal beam of length L subject to a uniform vertical load w per
unit length. The resulting vertical displacement in the beam y(x) satisfies the
differential equation: consider both Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions.
Assume L= 1m and let w/EI = -1; apply the necessary boundary conditions and
solve for y(x);
EI d4y
dx 4
=w
a. Consider the beam is a simply supported beam.
b. Repeat the problem when the beam is fixed in the left end and free on the right
end.
c. Note tha the above beam theory is applied to estimate the deflection of a laterally
loaded pile, rewrite the differential equation.
3. Assume a 10m x 10m size problem domain for steady state seepage analyses.
Consider the following boundary conditions:
a. Left boundary pore pressure 100 kPa
b. Right boundary pore pressure 100kPa
c. Bottom and right boundary 0 kPa
Evaluate the pore pressure distribution in the problem domain. Repeat the problem
assuming the Left pp = 100kPa and Top pp = 50kPa; and Bottompp = 100kPa and
Rightpp= 50kPa
4. If a stress is suddenly applied to a body, part of the body closest to the source of
disturbance will be affected first. The deformation of the body due to the load will
gradually spread throughout the body via stress waves. Stress wave propagation is of
extreme importance in geotechnical engineering, since it allows the determination of
soil properties such as modulus of elasticity, shear wave velocity, shear modulus;
interpretation of test results of geophysical investigation, numerical formulation of
ground response analysis and also helps in the development of the design parameters
for earthquake resistant structures.
Consider longitudinal elastic waves in a bar, the following equation can be written to
relate the displacement in the x-direction (u) and the velocity of the longitudinal stress
wave propagation (vs). Use the Finite difference method to solve the solution of the
equation. Assume boundary conditions.
