Dr.E Rudramuni Name : Chaitra.S
Principal Class : SecondYear [Link]
[Link]’s College of Education Reg no : U13ST22E0012
Chitradurga.
Student Previous Knowledge: Pupils already
know about how heat and light are produced in
everyday activities.

General Objectives :

1. To create Practical knowledge among the

students.
2. To develop scientific imagination among the
students.
3. To develop scientific Knowledge among the
students.
4. To develop logical thinking among the students..
Specific Objectives :

1. Knowledge: Pupil will be able to recall the

definition of Ignition Temperature.

2. Understanding: Pupil will be able to explain the

combustion process.

[Link]: Pupil will be able to differentiate the

combustible and non-combustible substances.

[Link] : Pupil will be able to Demonstrate to show

that how air is essential for burning,
Beginning Statement :
Good morning students, Today we are going to
discuss about the new and interesting topic.
Engage:

(conducting activity).

❖ We observed light and heat. 2. Along with fire what do you

observe?

3. How are the light and heat are

❖ By Burning. produced?

❖ Combustion. 4. What we call another name for

burning?

5. What happens when combustion

❖ Flame Produces. occurs
Statement of Aim :
So My dear Students, In this class we are going to
discuss about COMBUSTION AND FLAME.

Explore:

We use different kinds of fuel for various purposes

at home, in industry and for running automobiles.
Fuels like cow dung, wood, coal, charcoal, petrol,
diesel, CNG etc all are helpful for the combustion.

Tools :
1. Combustion.
2. Combustible and non-combustible substances.
3. Ignition temperature.
4. Inflammable substances.
EXPLAIN:-
COMBUSTION
o It is a chemical process in which a substance
react with oxygen to give off heat and light.
OR
o The process of burning of substances in air
or oxygen with the evolution of heat and light
is known as combustion.
COMBUSTIBLE SUBSTANCE:

 The substance that undergoes combustion is

called combustible substance.
 It is also called fuel. The fuel may be solid,
liquid or gas.
 Some examples of combustible substances are-

Wood, coal, petrol, kerosene, LPG etc

COMBUSTIBLE SUBSTANCES:

WOOD COAL LPG KEROSENE

NON COMBUSTIBLE SUBSTANCE:

The substance that does not undergo combustion is

called non-combustible substance.

Examples of non-combustible substances are rock,

steel, water, sand, etc.

SAND STONE
Eloberate:
Aim - To prove that air is necessary for burning.
Requirements - Two candles, a glass jar, and
matchsticks.
Theory -

Combustion - The reaction of oxygen(air) with a

substance(fuel) that results in the release of heat
and light is called combustion.
Fuels/l/g+Oxygen→Carbondioxide+Heat+Light

Procedure -
[Link] a candle and light it with a matchstick and
place it on a table.
[Link] another candle and light it, now cover the
candle with a glass jar.
Observation -
[Link] candle that is kept on the table continues to
burn.
[Link] candle that is covered with a glass jar burns
for some time and then extinguishes.

Conclusion - This means that the candle with a

continuous supply of air kept on burning, while the
other candle with no supply of air extinguished.
Result - Air is necessary for combustion/burning.
CONDITION FOR COMBUSTION:
• Presence of fuel or combustible substance.
• Providing temperature.
• Presence of oxygen.
IGNITION TEMPERATURE:

• The lowest temperature at which a combustible

substance starts burning is called its ignition
temperature.
• Different substances have different ignition
temperatures.
INFLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES:-

Substances that have a very low ignition

temperature and hence can catch fire easily are
called inflammable substances.

Some examples of inflammable substances are:

Petrol, diesel, LPG etc
PAPER CUP ACTIVITY :
PAPER CUP ACTIVITY:

A substance catches fire only if the heat

provided is more than or equal to its ignition
temperature. A substance cannot catch fire if its
temperature is below its ignition temperature. A
paper cup when heated acquires sufficient heat
to reach its ignition temperature and easily
catches fire. But if the same paper cup is filled
with water then the heat provided to the cup
gets transferred to the water. The cup does not
reach the ignition temperature and hence does
not catch fire.
Ending Statement :

So, Dear Students in this class we discussed

about Combustion, combustible and non-
combustible substances,ignition temperature and
inflammable substances. in the next class we will
discuss about New topic.
Evaluation:
Recapitulatory Questions:
1. What is Combustion?

2. Write the names of some combustible

substances?

3. What is ignition temperature?

4. Write the names of some inflammable

substances.
Black Board Summary:
The process of burning of substances in air or
oxygen with the evolution of heat and light is
known as [Link], coal, petrol,
kerosene, LPG etc are combustible
