(In)Validating by testing
● very early prototypes are subjected to
small-scale testing
● later prototypes are subject to large-scale
testing
● aim: gather feedback as early in the
development as possible, as often as we can
● controlled test environment

USABILITY
TESTING
“Usability testing is the practice of testing how easy a
design is to use with a group of representative users. It
usually involves observing users as they attempt to
complete tasks and can be done for different types of
designs. It is often conducted repeatedly, from early
development until a product's release.”

How do we test?
● research methods
○ observation
○ tests
○ questionnaires
○ interviews
○ use of one, more, or all of these methods
● research designs
○ pre-post test (one group)
○ quasi-experimental
○ mixed methods
WorkED:RT/// A Workshop on Enabling the Designer in Researcher-Technopreneurs.
Observation
● learning how to use the artifact
● testing protocol: determine the tasks that testers
need to complete
● tell the testers to perform one task at a time
● observe carefully while the testers perform the task
○ identify non-verbal cues
● you can tell testers to think aloud and tell you how
they feel while the task is going on
○ identify verbal cues (fillers, repetitions, misreads)
